Surrounded by Idiots
Surrounded by Idiots: The Four Types of Human Behavior and How to Effectively Communicate with Each in Business (and in Life) | Thomas Erikson
A runaway bestseller in Sweden that has sold more than a million copies worldwide, Surrounded by Idiots shares a groundbreaking new method of understanding the people around you that will change how you interact with everyone from your coworkers to your spouse. Author Thomas Erikson explains that there are four key behavior types that define how we interact with and perceive the people around us. Understanding someones pattern of behavior is the key to successful communication. Erikson breaks down the four kinds of behavior typesReds who are dominant and commanding, Yellows who are social and optimistic, Greens who are laid back and friendly, and Blues who are analytical and preciseand explains how to identify and interact with each type of person. Instead of being bogged down with overly technical categorizations, the simple four color system allows you to speedily identify a friend or coworker and adjust how you speak and share with them. Surrounded by Idiots is full of practical information for interacting with people based on their color, including the strengths and weaknesses of all the profiles, how to give positive and negative feedback to each, and the best way to word an email when writing to someone with a different profile.

Didn't particularly rate this - I found it to be quite dull and patronising. The idea of putting humans into 1 of 4 categories doesn't make much sense to me...and the author acknowledged that in saying that most people are a combination. But then I question what the book is really saying beyond 'people are different and we should be aware of that'? Not a bad read if you want some advice on how to respond when encountered with certain traits

I wanted to read this book, and it‘s companion “Surrounded by Psychopaths,” because I thought they would help me prepare for interviewing for new jobs after my job in Dallas can no longer be done remotely (from 1,100 miles away). I was enjoying it until I went looking for tests to verify which “color” I was. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I never found an answer, but I did find that my uncertainty existed not because something is wrong with me, but because the book itself is pseudoscientific madness. It turns out the only thing Erikson is an expert in is the long con. #ThomasErikson #SurroundedByIdiots #CommunicationSkills 3y

“He has just as much right as my poodle to call himself a behavioural scientist.”

Well, this is a disappointment. I was so looking forward to reading about how not to be manipulated, but it turns out Erikson is a conman. I‘m sorry I gave him money now.

GingerAntics Turns out the Myers–Briggs test is total BS too. To think I once had a psychology prof give us the DISC test that Erikson used and another that gave us Myers–Briggs; even though both are pseudoscience. That is not reassuring. 3y

Theese are the different personality colors you learn about in the book. Blue: analytic, exploring, careful, systematic, precise. Green: stability, patient, loyal, calm, friendly, good listener. Red: dominant, drive, ambicious, strong will, impatient, problem solving. Yellow: inspiaring, out going, open, verbal, creative, positive, emotional. I‘m yellow, what color are you?

Pickpick

Really funny and useful book. Easy to read and it teaches you alot about yourself and your personality type (good and bad) and alot about people around you. It makes it easier to understand why certan people do what they to or react in a certan way. It is also hillarious and very direct. I read it in norwegian, wich was a great translate from the original swedish. Also, very useful graphics in the book!

I was hoping for it to be a little better, but I have gained insight on how to better interact with coworkers and friends as well. Quick read on behavior, and was still worth the read.

“To simplify listening to this book I‘ve chosen to use him and he consistently when I refer to examples not associated to any specific person. I know you have enough imagination to insert a her or a she in your thoughts where this may be appropriate.”

Umm how about they or them? By announcing this, I‘m now very aware of every “he” and “him” and it‘s already grating. 😑

Chrissyreadit That would annoy me! 3y
Cosyreader @Chrissyreadit thank you! I wondered if I was being too sensitive 3y
Chrissyreadit @Cosyreader I don‘t think so. I would have preferred gender neutral pronouns to patriarchical pronouns. I feel like it‘s imposing a gender preference or power/authority these days. And I‘m totally ok with he/him pronouns and people just irritated that it still is used to define everything frequently. 3y

Cosyreader @Chrissyreadit I agree and since my last comment it‘s been playing on my mind, especially the use of the word “simplify”, suggesting that making things gender equal would complicate them. The book is about effective communication and he says that words are important and yet he‘s not considering his own 3y
Megabooks Possibly the author is an idiot?? So annoying! 3y
Clare-Dragonfly @Megabooks You‘ve hit it! 😂 3y
