Fight Like a Mother
Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World | Shannon Watts
13 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Shannon Watts was a stay-at-home mom folding laundry when news of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary flashed across the television screen. In one moment, she went from outraged to engaged and decided to do something about it. What started as a simple Facebook group to connect with other frustrated parents grew into Moms Demand Action, a national movement with millions of supporters and a powerful grassroots network of local chapters in all 50 states. Shannon has been called "the NRAs worst nightmareand her army of moms have bravely gone up against the gun lobby, showing up in their signature red shirts, blocking the hallways of congress with their strollers, electing gun sense candidates and running for office themselves, proving that if the 80 million moms in this country come together, they can put an end to gun violence. Fight Like a Mother is the incredible account how one mothers cry for change became the driving force behind gun safety progress. Along with stories of perseverance, courage, and compassion, Watts shines a light on the unique power of womenstarting with what they have, leading with their maternal strengths, and doubling down instead of backing down. While not everyone can be on the front lines lobbying congress, every mom is already a multi-tasking organizer, and Shannon explains how to go from amateur activist to having a real impact in your community and beyond. Fight Like a Mother will inspire everyonemothers and fathers, students and teachers, lawmakers, and anyone motivated to enact changeto get to work transforming hearts and minds, and passing laws that save lives.

Both a memoir and sort of how-to story of how a grassroots movement to enact gun safety legislation has made an impact at the local, state, and federal level. Quick read with great personal stories, words of wisdom about running a sprawling volunteer organization, and a lot of upbeat notes about accomplishments and how we can all contribute to seeing the change we crave.

Inspiring and extremely, sadly relevant. Shannon Watts describes her passion and motivation for preventing gun violence, what led her to establish Moms Demand Action, and outlines a way forward in these dark times. Full of wisdom, humility, and conviction.

Today I marched with Students and Moms Demand Action in Washington DC to demand common sense gun laws. Tomorrow we call our senators and ask them to pass the Background Checks Expansion Act.

Weekly checkin read some things and lots of walking in dc

wanderinglynn Great goals! And way to go. We need some common sense guns laws. 👍 5y

June was heavy on the nonfiction (9 of 13) for whatever reason. It wasn‘t planned, but I‘m not mad about it.

My only 5⭐️ was Fight Like a Mother because of what Shannon Watts and all the “Mothers and Others” have accomplished. The writing is decent, but the subject matter is close to my heart.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ From its spur of the moment inception following the devastation at Sandy Hook, to its rapid growth, branding, successes, and challenges, this is the in-depth story behind Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Thank you, Shannon Watts, and all members/volunteers, for your tireless work and dedication. I‘m proud to be a member of my local chapter.

Pleasantly surprised to see my Moms Demand Action chapter lead, and newest friend, Kristi quoted in this book! Here, she is speaking about fighting a bill that would allow educators to carry concealed in Tennessee schools. This was 2018. It didn‘t pass. Moms showed up and made a difference. 🙌🏻 We fought it off again in 2019 🙌🏻, but it will no doubt show up again next year. #keepgoing

Blaire The recent interview with Shannon watts in the nytimes was great. Her schedule is intense but what‘s she accomplished is impressive. Proud to be a member of moms demand action. 6y

britt_brooke @Blaire She amazes me. 💚 I‘m so happy you‘re a member, too. I joined earlier this year and hope to become more active as my youngest starts kindergarten this fall. 6y
batsy That's amazing. I can't believe a bill like that even came to exist 😔 6y
britt_brooke @batsy It‘s truly disturbing how many Americans think the answer to gun violence is ... more guns. 6y

Gonna be a long morning of soccer camp. Good thing I‘m always prepared!

I decided to delete my bookstagram account and it‘s so liberating. 😆 It was taking too much of my time away from Litsy, my true love! Bookstagram is way too much of a popularity contest and I‘m not into that. Litsy is my happy place!! 🤗

rather_be_reading i love that bag!! 6y
rather_be_reading also agree w bookstagram! 6y
britt_brooke @rather_be_reading Thank you! I got it in a Litsy swap. 💚 One day I‘ll actually make it to The Strand. 6y

saresmoore Yay! 6y
Scochrane26 I didn‘t know about the strand until being on Litsy. Next time I go to nyc, I think I need to make it literary themed. 6y
Marilyncjackson Yay for happy place! 6y
rretzler Oh, that scene looks so familiar. ⚽️ Done that many times! My 17yo son “retired” from soccer last year after many years of club soccer, but my 14yo is still going strong. He‘s on the Ohio South ODP State Pool (State team to be announced Friday) and HS summer lifting and training starts tomorrow. Last week were club tryouts - and we‘re still waiting to hear if his Futsal team will be training this summer! 6y
Cathythoughts I‘ve never heard of bookstagram ! Just had a quick look ... very arty / some fab pics ... I think we are keeping it real here on Litsy - 6y
CallMeIshmael This is awesome, I have been thinking about deleting Facebook and Instagram but didn‘t want to give instagram for a few reasons and your page is one of them. Glad to always have you here 6y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 I didn‘t either, but it looks amazing! I feel like I didn‘t know a lot of stuff until I joined Litsy. 😆 I‘m a much better book nerd now. 6y
britt_brooke @rretzler My sons are 5 and 7, both play and love it. I hope they stick with it! My oldest has played 8 seasons, youngest 2 so far. Best of luck to your 14 year old!! 6y
britt_brooke @Cathythoughts You nailed it! Litsy keeps it real. 💚💚💚 6y
britt_brooke @CallMeIshmael Thanks a bunch, Matt! As long as Litsy exists, I‘ll be here. Bookstagram just got annoying. It‘s a cliquey popularity contest. Definitely not my idea of fun. 6y
rretzler Thanks! I envy you just starting out with them. It was much more fun back in those days. Hope it stays fun for all of you! Plus they‘re so adorable at that age! 6y
britt_brooke @rretzler It really is fun at these ages. I know it‘ll get more intense when they‘re old enough to have tryouts and all. As long as they‘re having fun and learning, we‘re happy. It‘s such a great sport for kids. Excellent exercise! 6y
Reviewsbylola I tried a bookstagram account for a few months too before I found Litsy. It wasn‘t my thing. I‘m not very artistic and I just feel like Litsy encourages more discussion. 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Littens are my people. The Bookstagram crowd largely seems like they‘re more worried about likes and followers as if they‘re going to be Instagram famous (ha, yeah right), and narrating the most mundane stuff in their Instagram stories. And, ironically, not all that many book reviews. Litsy just feels more genuine. (edited) 6y

#bookmail | I predict both will be tough reads. The Bourdain one is really a coffee table type book. The Shannon Watts book is an important read for me because I recently joined my local Moms Demand Action group. Looking forward to learning more about her story.

Melissa_J I‘ll be curious for your thoughts on the Watts book. Living in a country that doesn‘t have major gun issues (we still have issues with guns, but no where near the magnitude of the problems in the US, even when factoring in population differences), I can‘t at all wrap my head around why gun control is such a hot button issue in the US. 6y
MelissaSue81 I thought Fight Like a Mother was Excellent. It wasn‘t a tough read for me necessarily.. parts were a little dry, but overall informative and inspiring. I actually re-contacted my local moms demand action the same day I finished it. 6y
britt_brooke @Melissa_J I wish I knew why exactly the US has so many issues. Watts‘s group‘s purpose is for common sense gun laws. Right now, my state (TN) just passed a bill that allows someone to carry concealed without any live training. It‘s been reduced to a 90 min online video and a quiz. It‘s crazy. That‘s just one issue. It‘s exhausting. 6y

britt_brooke @MelissaSue81 That is good to hear. I‘m happy you are back in touch with you Moms group! I‘m hoping to get move involved with mine. 6y
MallenNC I don't think I'm ready for the Bourdain book yet, but I definitely want to read Fight Like a Mother. I read Parkland this year. I thought it was inspiring and not as hard to read as I expected. 6y
britt_brooke @MallenNC I‘m curious about Parkland and Columbine. Cullen seems amazing. But school shootings are a trigger and I haven‘t been able to do it. 😩 I think Fight Like a Mother will be a tough one, too. 6y
Megabooks My friend Jaime is active in Moms in Brooklyn. Sounds like an interesting book! 6y
MallenNC @britt_brooke I have not read Columbine and I don't think I ever will. Parkland focused more on the activism of the students after, not the shooting. There were still sad parts but the focus was hopeful. 6y
britt_brooke @MallenNC That‘s good to know - thank you! 6y

Parts of this book were a little dry, and parts I didn‘t think were super useful (l don‘t really need to know how to brand an advocacy group..while I know it was important in her process.. I don‘t know that it would be for most people) but there are some really useful suggestions for getting involved as well as some great information on the successes of the gun reform movement. Good statistics on gun violence and also gun myths dispelled.
