Last Ones Left Alive
Last Ones Left Alive | Sarah Davis-Goff
Combines the spare poetry of The Road with the dizzying pace of 28 Days Later. Jennie Melamed, author Gather the Daughters A riveting novel. Eowyn Ivey, bestselling author of The Snow Child Remember your just-in-cases. Beware tall buildings. Always have your knives. Raised in isolation by her mother and Maeve on a small island off the coast of a post-apocalyptic Ireland, Orpens life has revolved around training to fight a threat shes never seen. More and more she feels the call of the mainland, and the prospect of finding other survivors. But that is where danger lies, too, in the form of the flesh-eating menace known as the skrake. Then disaster strikes. Alone, pushing an unconscious Maeve in a wheelbarrow, Orpen decides her last hope is abandoning the safety of the island and journeying across the country to reach the legendary banshees, the rumored all-female fighting force that battles the skrake. But the skrake are not the only threat... Sarah Davis-Goff's Last Ones Left Alive is a brilliantly original imagining of a young woman's journey to discover her true identity.

This is a short book so hoping it is gripping enough to get it done in one sitting today.

Jordan, thank you thank you for this amazingly spooktacular #HHS gift box. I love everything (I already ate the Rolos lol!!) I‘ll be wearing my socks tomorrow and I can‘t wait to start these books. Nights of the Living Dead - the zombie movie that started it all. Love it!!

Happy Halloween @The.Great.Catsby !

Pretty good! A uniquely quiet look at a zombie apocalypse survivor. There were some things I wanted to know more about. But overall enjoyable.

And that's that, last read of 2021. Did not achieve my Goodreads goal at all, gonna set it to something much easier for 22 😝

TBR read for more points, too, yay!

There‘s so much to like about this dystopian Irish story but I finished feeling unsatisfied. I wanted more.

This story is ok. We follow Orpen in dual timelines. Her life being raised on an island zombie free near Ireland by two women, her Mam and Mauve, who are raising her to... this is where it‘s about that parenting where you give your child the answer but don‘t exactly tell them the question. And the other timeline is off the island after she is left alone and how that answer becomes wrong because she doesn‘t know what it was all for. It bugged 👇🏼

Reggie me. Also I‘m grouchy today so maybe that is part of it but I don‘t think so. So just so-so. 3y
vivastory Sorry to hear that this one didn't work out for you 3y
Reggie @vivastory I just feel like if you‘re gonna try to raise a kid in the zombie apocalypse you need to be able to tell the truth. This kid gets trained like the people her parents ran away from and because of silence end up running towards the city where women are impregnated and enslaved at best. Also , in The Road what‘s the first thing the kid says when they see the dog? Please don‘t kill it so we can eat it. THAT kid knew what was going on. I‘m 3y

Reggie sorry, Scott. I really wanted to like it. 3y
Centique @Reggie you know I‘m not going to read it and yet I‘m taking your advice about raising children in a zombie apocalypse very seriously. 😳 🙌🙌 3y
Reggie @Centique lol, I want to say that New Zealand has never been the point of origin in any zombie book or movie I‘ve read so ya‘ll are safe being on an island but I did read this one short story where this woman does survive for years on a fence enclosed land during a zombie apocalypse in NZ. But she gets so lonely one day during gardening wondering what it‘s all worth that she just rolls to the fence and let‘s the zombies have her. It was very sad. 3y
Centique @Reggie that is sad! But yes, islands are great when it comes to zombies. Not so great for volcanoes and tsunamis however! We paint lines on our roads (up the hills from beaches) to show how high you need to be in case of a tsunami 😳😳 3y
Centique Maybe that‘s why I get freaked out by disaster movies too 🤯 3y
Reggie I watched an episode of house hunters in Hawaii where if the house wasn‘t high enough on the island they had to pay more for tsunami insurance but if it was too high they had to pay for volcano insurance. In NM we‘re pretty safe from natural disasters. Our scary future is the one with very little water. We‘re really dry and most of our rivers have stopped flowing. @Centique 3y
Centique @Reggie that‘s fascinating. I am keen to visit NM one day after seeing your postcards and the kids book you sent me. 😍 The landscape and history is so different from here. I hope the water situation improves. We are on water restrictions here - just having less rain than we are used to, although it still seems a lot, not enough to fill the dams. 3y

Set amongst deserted villages & the Irish countryside, Last Ones Left Alive has a strong sense of place. Several reviewers noting the spare yet evocative prose compared it to McCarthy's The Road. This is very much an atypical zombie novel, & one I will be recommending in the future for underrated zombie stories. Thanks to @sprainedbrain for putting it on my radar!

Zombie apocalypse novels aren‘t really my thing; I read this because it was a recommendation from my MIL. I felt this one could have done with some more world building. I would have liked some background in how the apocalypse happened and some history of the Banshees, the army of women that fight the zombies.

Bleak, sad, and taut, but with moments of hope and triumph. I cannot believe I‘m talking about a zombie book, but reader, I am.

I flew through this book, after almost not even starting. Really strong writing and a serious feminist vibe. Orpen is a character that is going to stick with me, and I must say I would not be opposed to a sequel. Her world is original and fascinating.

A solid zombie tale. Took me about half the book to get into it and I‘m not huge on zombies but I did like it overall. #ARC

Set in a post-apocalyptic Ireland, this zombie thriller is certainly evocative and atmospheric. The considered prose is full of colloquial quirks that really instil it with a firm sense of place that I enjoyed. It is also quite fiercely feminist in a lot of ways, and neatly subverts many tropes of the genre. While it slightly lagged for me about three quarters of the way in, it's a great, quick read. I'd give it a solid three and a half stars.
