2nd book of 2024. I struggled to get into this book. I would be captured in some parts and felt dragged thru others and like i was losing interest. It is not a stand-alone book, it does end in a questionable matter that makes you have to read book 2. The characters are fairly well developed and so is the world where it takes place. Perfect for a black history themed book. Oh and i never saw the twist coming!

I‘m not much for fantasy, but this sounded interesting and I loved Felix Ever After, so I thought I‘d try the audio from my library. Well, the audiobook is just bad. The reader has such a monotonous delivery that I‘m bailing out at the 16% point. If I get inspired someday, I may try this in print.

This wasn't the right book for me, but it's not so-so. It has strong writing and a solid, interesting world. I thought the characters were well portrayed, especially Sigourney who isn't loveable but she's a compelling character. There was a lot of political intrigue and murder in this book, which isn't usually my thing, and there were a few things I didn't feel worked well but wouldn't have detracted from my enjoyment if I'd liked the book more.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.

I rarely use my kindle except for when I‘m traveling. So I‘ve had this for a while. I‘m glad it was chosen as my #bookspin this month.

There was a bit more repetition than I would have liked, but overall I enjoyed this dark fantasy. I was really curious about Loren throughout this book that focuses on Sigourney‘s story, so I‘m looking forward to the second book from his point of view.

A quiet morning alone at my AirBnB calls for reading by the pool and then a visit to a close-by bookshop!

Most of my reads were thought provoking this month, but I think Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender will stay with me the longest. Colonial violence in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy setting, exploring the corruption of power and ruthless sacrifices in the service of rebellion - well worth a look if you enjoyed The Unbroken by CL Clark (still my favourite fantasy of the year so far)

Well hell this is a harsh read that takes all your expectations about vengeful heirs and fantasy rebellions and turns them on their head. An unsympathetic protagonist in a fantasy Caribbean where colonisers use magic as another tool to oppress the islanders they despise. Brutally well-executed if not exactly an enjoyable read.

In addition to our Bone Shard Daughter read-along, I‘ve dived into Kacen Callender‘s Caribbean colonial fantasy Queen of the Conquered. I‘m finding it hard work (I want to support Sigourney but this feels almost like a villain origin story?) - hopefully I‘ll settle in soon!

Sort of a mystical fantasy on colonialism in the caribbean. I enjoyed it, but didn't realise that it is a duology. So many unanswered questions, but I don't have the second book.

1/2 post of my audiobooks read in June I really enjoyed The Book of Pride and Queen of the Conquered from this set but they were all pretty good. Lovely War had a full cast which was pretty cool. ❤️ #audiobooks

I loved this book! It examines power and privilege in a fictitious world that reminds me of the Caribbean and the East India Trade Company - the names, etc but also how the islands are colonized and the people enslaved...masterfully written. There were a couple of sections which were repetitive and it slowed down the story but it would pick right back up. The magic used is also amazing and scary at the same time. 📚📚📚📚

I so badly wanted to like this. It‘s an #ownvoices novel and written by someone that uses “their” pronouns. Their inspiration for writing it is really interesting and nothing I had ever considered...

But I just couldn‘t get into it. I made it around page 180-200 and decided to #DNF. I didn‘t like how the MC was constantly talking about how everyone hated her & I felt like it was a simple plot that moved too slowly.
