The one thing I insist upon with romance novels is true consent. Even though Millie agrees to “pay” Argent with sex for not killing her and instead taking on a role as her protector, it‘s coercion not consent. I kept hoping he‘d change his mind, that the love story would develop, and then they could be physically intimate, but no. He gets his payment and I‘m out. I‘m done with this author.

CarolynM Coercion or manipulation are hard “no”s for me too. 11mo
julesG Thanks for the review. Will steer clear of this author. 11mo
robinb Normally I like this author, but I‘m glad to have the heads up on this one. I also agree about the coercion/manipulation. Don‘t care how much the hero “changes” or “grows” after. In some of these romances there‘s too fine a line between an “alpha male” and a predator. Not a fan…at all. 11mo

DGRachel @robinb I‘ve liked the other books I‘ve read by her, as they have been really beautiful love stories. I think that‘s why I was so disappointed. I already own several others in this series and I can‘t decide if I want to read those or wash my hands of the author completely. 11mo
robinb @DGRachel According to GR I‘ve read 6 of her books with nothing below a 4, so I‘m disappointed to hear about this one. I‘ve got the first in her new historical mystery series, have you read any of those? Just wondering how she does in a different genre. 11mo
DGRachel @robinb I have not. I do love a good historical mystery, though. 🤔 11mo
robinb @DGRachel You and me both! 😂 I have it on my BookSpin list just so it doesn‘t get lost in the shuffle. (edited) 11mo

I think Argent, an assassin for hire with a horrific past that had me in tears, might be my new favorite book boyfriend. He‘s my perfect hero -tortured past that makes him emotionally cut off, until he meets our heroine. She‘s strong, no pushover, but she understands and loves him for who he is.Millie is an actress and she and her son are in danger.he has been hired to kill her,but there‘s something about her that stops him and has him protecting her.

I liked her use of humor, good plot pacing, lots of plot tension. I liked her characters, they seemed well fleshed out. Trigger warning for hero‘s tragic childhood, I nearly quit in the first chapter. The heroine is an actress, so there is plenty of drama. The plot has some of the crazy sauce, but not so much that I lost patience with the book. I would have liked a little more plot for the side characters.

"We are all monsters sometimes." 1877. Man who spend his entire childhood in prison is the best assassin but he can't bring himself to kill his latest target, a Polish actress with a nine year old son. Lots of angst. #romantsy #osrbc

A cold assassin with a traumatic past starts smoldering as soon as he meets a Polish actress with a dangerous secret that might prove fatal. Lots of gnashing of teeth a la Heathcliff and soothing understanding a la every brave romance heroine plus a Harry Potterish kid. Byrne's second Victorian Rebels novel doesn't disappoint on the melodrama or sexy times front.

JoRead I love this author. I'm glad you enjoy the book 😊 7y

SaraFair Love the overall look of the room, but you would have to remember the cover color to find your books. May not be an issue. 7y

The prologue alone destroyed me! This is an awesome book of survival and finding love. Featuring non-aristocratic main characters, the heroine is an actress while the hero is an assassin sent to kill her. This is the best book of the series, so far!

The right mix of emotional entanglements, spicy sex, danger and excitement, set in Regency-era society. I loved it!
