Dancing with the Tiger
Dancing with the Tiger | Lili Wright
22 posts | 11 read | 48 to read
When 30-year-old Anna Ramsey learns that a meth-addicted looter has dug up what might be the funerary mask of Montezuma, she books the next flight to Oaxaca. Determined to redeem her father, a discredited art collector, and to one-up her unfaithful fianc, a museum curator, Anna hurls herself headlong into Mexicos underground art world. But others are chasing the treasure as well: the shape-shifting drug lord no one can really describe; the enigmatic American expat, who keeps his art collection locked in a chapel; the former museum director who traffics stolen works, and his housekeeperdeeply religious, a gay woman in a culture of machismo, dependent on a patron she loathes; the painter Salvador on his motorcycle, complex, sensualbut with secrets of his own. Anna soon realizes that everyone is maskedsome literally, others metaphorically. Indeed, Dancing with the Tiger is a splendid reminder that throughout human history, cultures have revered masks: whether in the theater or in war, for religious purposes, or to conceal identity, masks are as universal as our desire to transform ourselves, to change. Anna, without an ounce of self-pity despite traumatic losses, stands out as a heroine for our times as, traveling alone, she finds the courage to show her true face. From the Hardcover edition.

I have to admit that the cover caught my eye first - but it sounds so fascinating I had to buy it. Archeological thriller mystery I'm not sure if this is a genre but reminds me of Matthew Reilly? Anyway I bought it 😂 book buying ban be damned!

Louise Sometimes judging a book by its cover pays off! 😂 8y
Soubhiville Also you accidentally just hit today's prompt for #lyricalapril - #tinydancer! 😊 8y
Emilyrjones22 Oooo, archaeological thriller mystery SHOULD be a genre!! The Egyptologist would fall into that category, one of my favorites. 8y

Not sure how I feel about this one. I enjoyed the cultural insight and the discussion on the production of masks inherent in the culture of Mexico and the people of Mexico. However, none of the characters were likeable or terribly relatable. I am sure the author was trying to draw some parallels between the cultural concepts of masks and the masks that we wear, but I found the characters in this book annoying!

Made me laugh out loud. The book is interesting so far although it has taken a while to find the groove. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out 😊

"When I went to Mexico, I understood just how far a mask can take you. In the dusty streets, villagers turned themselves into jaguars, hyenas, the devil himself. For years I thought wearing a mask was a way to start over, become someone new. Now I know better.”

This was a fun and exciting read. This was a host of some of the most dysfunctional characters ever, but it worked with the storyline. I read this while I was on vacation in Mexico which made it even more fun!

This morning's Brooklyn #stoopbook #bookhaul from the dog walk. My pup was being rather impatient so I couldn't read descriptions and just grabbed this one because I remembered seeing the vibrant cover here on Litsy! I'm pretty pleased with this find!

The cover is absolutely stunning! The plot makes it a page turner and very interesting however I have to question the overtly used Mexican dichos (sayings). It made the novel seem unauthentic. I see the point the author wanted to make by including them but it just did the opposite for me. Would definitely recommend it for the plot.

ApoptyGina69 I'm headed to San Miguel de Allende in a couple weeks. I'll look for it at the Bibliotheca. 8y
Matilda Was it one of those "not own voice" that threw it off? Or does that usually bother you when done? 8y

Check out our latest Penguin blog post -- A Note from the Editor: DANCING WITH THE TIGER!

"What gives this novel its psychological power is its multifaceted exploration of how we hide ourselves in plain sight."

I picked this up because of the amazing cover...and at about two thirds through, the story within is every bit as colorful. Really enjoying this!

Another one that straddles being a pick and just so-so. The characters are all messes, making one bad decision after another, and there are a few too many viewpoints thrown on. Still, the story and plot were intriguing and kept me turning pages. It's definitely worth giving it a shot.
