Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove
Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove | Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson
"You have to bear in mind that [Questlove] is one of the smartest motherf*****s on the planet. His musical knowledge, for all practical purposes, is limitless." --Robert Christgau MO' META BLUES"The World According to Questlove" Mo' Meta Blues is a punch-drunk memoir in which Everyone's Favorite Questlove tells his own story while tackling some of the lates, the greats, the fakes, the philosophers, the heavyweights, and the true originals of the music world. He digs deep into the album cuts of his life and unearths some pivotal moments in black art, hip hop, and pop culture. Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is many things: virtuoso drummer, producer, arranger, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon bandleader, DJ, composer, and tireless Tweeter. He is one of our most ubiquitous cultural tastemakers, and in this, his first book, he reveals his own formative experiences--from growing up in 1970s West Philly as the son of a 1950s doo-wop singer, to finding his own way through the music world and ultimately co-founding and rising up with the Roots, a.k.a., the last hip hop band on Earth. Mo' Meta Blues also has some (many) random (or not) musings about the state of hip hop, the state of music criticism, the state of statements, as well as a plethora of run-ins with celebrities, idols, and fellow artists, from Stevie Wonder to KISS to D'Angelo to Jay-Z to Dave Chappelle to...you ever seen Prince roller-skate?!? But Mo' Meta Blues isn't just a memoir. It's a dialogue about the nature of memory and the idea of a post-modern black man saddled with some post-modern blues. It's a book that questions what a book like Mo' Meta Blues really is. It's the side wind of a one-of-a-kind mind. It's a rare gift that gives as well as takes. It's a record that keeps going around and around.

My Rush University Medical Bookstore Chicago #bookhaul Y'all!! I'm being bad with a new credit card again, but after a painful procedure I was like- welllll uuummm YES!!! They had all kinds of crazy stuffed animal germs and diseases. Of course I chose the bookworm!! I don't know if I should post the description it's quite disturbing, lol. Most of these were on sale, except Hamilton ($20) but I figured that's a collector's item. 📚📚❤️❤️❤️

Mimi28 The tagged book was just an impulse buy because it was on sale and he seems really cool and intriguing 🤷🏽‍♀️🤔lol. The Roots are awesome 🎹🎷🥁🥁 7y
Christine Mo' Meta Blues is great! 7y

Finished late last night. I have a whole new world of music to discover thanks to ?uestlove! He feels like such an accessible artist/person through his writing. After reading this and Hunger Makes me A Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein I feel like devouring more music related/artist memoirs!

I am a fan of Questlove and hip hop so I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint. A friend lent this book to me and told me after reading it that she felt that we could "be friends" with Questlove. After reading this myself, I agree with that sentiment. I have a lot of respect for him and his work and loved hearing about his influences and thoughts on music, politics and culture.

Just a delight—Questlove is just a charming, humble, thoughtful human being. I've loved the Roots for a long time. Questlove keeps it light while going deep at the same time—a real feat. His philosophical musings about the states of pop culture, hip-hop, and music criticism were intelligent and spot on. Loved it!

Well it only took me 15 chapters/187 pages to realize that Questlove starts every chapter with a question. I like this one that kicks off chapter 13. #memoir #questlove #hiphop #music #musicmemoir

Aw man, I hate when I find misspelled words in books. Especially when the same misspelled word keeps reappearing 😖😞 (this is still an awesome book though).

LauraBrook Yes! So annoying. I fixed it in my library copy. 😊 8y

Really enjoying this. I've known very few people who define their life by the music they were obsessed with. So many of my memories are framed by the soundtrack playing at that moment.

Really great. I don't know any song by The Roots, I'm only familiar with the album titles and Questlove and Tariq's names. I've seen Q on shows and movies and felt some strange connection to him, I always really liked him. After reading this memoir of his, I'm happy to say I still really like him. The way he describes music when he was small feels v familiar to me. And while I wasn't familiar with half of the songs/artists he mentions, it didn't..

LauraBrook ...matter. I really enjoyed the heck out of this book, and would love to meet him one day. 8y
ultrabookgeek After I read this book, I ordered a bunch of CD's mentioned. 8y

This is what the walls around me will look like for most of the #24in48 this weekend - my crazy cluttered living room!
Where in the world are you reading from this weekend? My house in the burbs of Milwaukee, WI and my office a few miles away.
Have you done this RAT before? Yes! Usually I plan better and take the wknd off, though.
What book are you most looking forward to? Nothing in particular.
Where can we find you? Here!

LauraBrook Tell us something about yourself! I'm never good at these. I'm an only child, my cats are my kids, I'm currently needing to transition away from my current job for health reasons and don't have a lot of hope I'll figure something else out and still be able to support myself. Oh, and I can't handle humidity and heat that well, so since this is our third straight day of heat indexes over 100 degrees, I'm dreading leaving the house! 😨 8y
MrBook Nice living room!!! 😊 8y
MrBook Yeah, I'm not a hot and humid kind of person either. No hotter than 75 for me, thank you very much. 8y

rabbitprincess Amazing bookshelves! 8y
LauraBrook @MrBook @SusanInTiburon @sprainedbrain @Basia @rabbitprincess Thank you! Maybe I'll do some more shelfies over the weekend. My grandparents put these up when they moved in in the 40's, and they've always been pretty full. Of course, this is like 1/8th of the books I own bc I have a problem, but it's what I look at nearly all the time I'm at home. 8y
LauraBrook @Basia Yes it is, it's horrid, I'm just thankful for the clouds so it's not over 100! My next client (I'm a massage therapist) always wants hot towels, even on days like today, so I'll be sweating for sure! 8y
[DELETED] 3216391035 @LauraBrook hope you made it through your workday! I had a massage therapist ask me once if I wanted heat on the table in July...uh, no....😡😃 8y
MrBook *scoffs with sporadic huffs* The only problem I reckon is that you have not enough books! You deserve at least another sixteen eighths! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great shelves! 8y
