The Lost and Forgotten Languages of Shanghai
The Lost and Forgotten Languages of Shanghai: A Novel | Ruiyan Xu
7 posts | 6 read | 11 to read
The Lost and Forgotten Languages of Shanghai is Ruiyan Xu's dazzling debut novel about the power of love and language... Li Jing, a successful, happily married businessman, is dining at a grand hotel in Shanghai when a gas explosion shatters the building. A shard of glass neatly pierces Li Jing's foreheadobliterating his ability to speak Chinese. The only words that emerge from his mouth are faltering phrases of the English he spoke as a child growing up in Virginia. Suddenly Li Jing finds himself unable to communicate with his wife, Meiling, whom he once courted with beautiful words, as she struggles to keep his business afloat and maintain a brave face for their son. The family turns to an American neurologist, Rosalyn Neal, who is as lost as Li Jing--whom she calls James--in this bewitching, bewildering city, where the two form a bond that Meiling does not need a translator to understand.

Well, I didn‘t quite make the 24 hours, but I had a great weekend of reading! I finished the two on the left and made good progress on the two on the right. They‘re all really good books, too. And now, time to get ready for bed.

I hope you all had great reading weekends too!

BeansPage I think you did amazing sweetheart! You should be so proud of yourself 🙌💕🎉🎉🎉 6y

Pickpick

I chose this for my author #LetterX for LitsyAtoZ. It was an uncomfortable story about a man who loses the ability to speak after a terrible head injury. The relationship shift with his wife, whom he can no longer communicate with, is painful and difficult to watch crumble. I felt for both of them.

It‘s finally perfect reading outside weather! I picked this book up at the library for my #LetterX author for #LitsyAtoZ. I‘m enjoying it! I think only one other person has posted on this book here, @Cinfhen 😊, and it‘s current Litsy rating is 0%! Let‘s see if I can raise that!

Melissa_J What a pretty cover! 6y

#17RainbowBooks #Indigoorvioletcovers Well, the lettering is deep indigo and there's shades of violet on the cover. Have not read but it is my intended X for #LitsyAtoZ 💜💙💜

shawnmooney This sounds so interesting, but has very mixed reviews on Goodreads – I'm sure looking forward to hearing what you think! ❤💜❤💜 8y

shawnmooney Oh, but now, having checked almost consistently poor reviews on Goodreads, maybe not so alluring… :-) 8y

ValerieAndBooks I'm a fan of Sue Grafton! Will Q be your first by her? And yes Book Depository is great! 8y

Cinfhen @ValerieAndBooks yes, it's my first Sue Grafton ?will I be "confused" as I'm jumping into the series?!? 8y
ValerieAndBooks Kinsey is an orphan, and as time goes on, learns more about her family and her family tree seems to keep growing. I don't think it's a big focus in this particular mystery and even so doesn't directly affect her sleuthing. This particular one in the series has really stayed w/ me because it was based on a real-life mystery. 8y
ValerieAndBooks So, in a nutshell, this one is probably fine 😊 8y
Cinfhen Haha, thanks @ValerieAndBooks 😘looking forward to reading this book! I HAVE sooooo many to get to, that my#birthdaychallenge reads have taken a major back seat 💺 😕 8y
Cinfhen If only I could read my #birthdaychallenge books out of chronological order😖 8y
ValerieAndBooks I know what you mean about reading plans going temporarily astray... I have the next birthday challenge book patiently waiting for me!! 8y
