Riddley Walker, first published in 1980, is a brilliant, unique, and completely realized work of fiction. One reads it again and again, discovering new wonders. Set in a remote future in a post-nuclear holocaust England (Inland), Hoban has imagined a humanity regressed to an iron-age, semi-literate state -- and invented a language to represent it. Riddley is at once the Huck Finn and the Stephen Dedalus of his culture, change agent, rebel, and artist. "Walker is my name and I am the same, Riddley Walker. Walking my riddles where ever they've took me and walking them now on this paper the same.

The best book I've read all year. A second Book of Genesis cobbled together from scraps of Bible verse, western mythology, parables, art history, and pop culture left over after a nuclear holocaust sent human civilization back to the Stone Age some 2,400 years in the past. Profound, moving, funny, and utterly unique. I imagine I'll be re-reading this for years to come.

BarbaraBB That‘s quite the recommendation 🤩 1mo
Bookwomble It's a fantastic book. I loved this one. 1mo

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. There are so many ways to judge "creativity" that my list could go on forever. Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Leonora Carrington...lots of sci-fi/fantasy writers, like Tolkien, Gene Wolfe, Neil Gaiman. But I'm going to say Russell Hoban, just for Riddley Walker alone.

2. Tagged!

In case you haven't been tagged already (I know you have @RaeLovesToRead ?) @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @IuliaC @CBee

RaeLovesToRead Hehe, you have to tag me anyway or I feel left out 😇 7mo
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 7mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oooh, this is a hard one! Some of your author choices are going to make it onto my list for sure. 7mo

Classic post-apocalyptic novel set in a far distant "Inland" which has been bombed back to the Iron Age and narrated in its own distinctive, fractured English. A chilling and unsettling tale which resists easy interpretation yet seems to speak to both our present and, worryingly, our future. "O what we ben! And what we come to!" Wonderful.

Very, very overlooked. A genius work of linguistics and wordplay. A coming of age tale in post apocalyptic England. I've given away so many copies of this over the years. Some folks can't get past the language... Let it sing in your inner voice, i say. Like poetry.

Arghhhh bailed at page 3!!! Really annoying phonetic writing style then I hit this gem of a sentence: “they kilt the chyld and drunk it‘s blood and cut up the meat for cooking” 😱 I don‘t want to be reading about eating children thanks. 🤢

Aimeesue I love, love, LOVE Ridley Walker! Amazing book. 7y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue It's fantastic, isn't it? 😊 7y
Aimeesue Indeed. One of my favorite post-apoc stories. The language reminded me of the way Paul Kingsnorth wrote The Wake. Of course, RW came first, but I read The Wake first. 7y

Bookwomble @Aimeesue I've not come across The Wake, but just added it to my tbr 😊 I assume from the setting and future it's a version of the life of Hereward, but perhaps I'm deceived. I've read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in Middle English, so hopefully this won't be to painful. 7y
Aimeesue Exactly right. Took me a while longer than RW did to get the language, but def not as difficult as Chaucer or Sir Gawain. It Isa brutal, brutal book, though. Was longlisted for the Booker, 2014. 7y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue #TMBTLT [sighs 😪] 7y
Tiyas7 @Bookwomble The language's seriously different😮 However, in a very interesting kind of way🙌. Why is this book written like this??? What's the reason? 7y
Tiyas7 @Bookwomble I'm really intrigued now😄 7y
Bookwomble @Tiyas7 It's set about 2000 years after a nuclear war had sent Inland (England, and presumably the rest of the world) back to an Iron Age stage of development. The language is the result of two millennia of linguistic drift. 7y
Tiyas7 @Bookwomble Pretty good😀 Will need to grab a copy soon👍 7y

I started this book prepared for it to be difficult to get to grips with, because that's what most of the reviews say. The broken and twisted English, the mutated grammar and future-slang, all adding to the appeal of the story, but hard to wade through. That's not what I found, though.Maybe it's exposure to text-spelling, Twitter-speak and Facebook-English, but I found the language of the book fell into place fairly quickly and naturally. 👇🏻👇🏻

Bookwomble I hope that nobody would be put off reading Hoban's amazing story by concerns over the language in which it's written, that's part of the book's charm.

The story comes from the science-fiction staple of the post-apocalyptic, nuclear-war-ravaged future, with people struggling to survive at an Iron Age level of technology, whilst surrounded by the ruins and shattered artifacts of the "advanced" civilization that destroyed itself. ????

Bookwomble Hoban mixes into that Celtic mythology, English folklore, Christian iconography, and a jumbled, incomplete and incomprehensible science. The narrative is allusive and there are lots of double meanings that reward the reader's time in mulling over. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. 7y
saresmoore High praise & a great review! I didn‘t find the quote you shared difficult to read—the rhythm seems to settle in quickly. This sounds fascinating! 7y

Bookwomble @saresmoore It really is! It follows Riddley Walker, a boy of about 12-15, as he travels through his world trying (and largely failing) to make sense of it. The reader, however, through Riddley's eyes, understands more about what happened in the past (our future) and how we managed to destroy ourselves. It's brutal and funny and beautiful. 7y
Aimeesue All that, and a Punch & Judy show, too! 😋 It's an amazing book. 7y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue Mr Punch is a very naughty boy! 7y

So, I decided I needed a “brain break” from the difficult book I‘m reading and picked this up to read instead, and this is the first sentence. 🤦‍♀️ Supposed to be an amazing book (recommended by Margaret Atwood, no less!), but Im getting an ache in my lobes already.

saresmoore Ugh. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @saresmoore It‘s work, but it‘s supposed to be worth it? 7y
saresmoore I‘m interested to hear whether or not you stick it out! 7y

Although you could only read this if you read English I don't think it's hard to argue it's #notinenglish

I read this in college at a dark time in my life and I don't think I finished it. It was amazing though, and the post-apocalyptic language was incredible. Some day I'll get back to it. I still can't wrap my brain around this coming from the author of "Bread and Jam for Francis."

BookishMarginalia I also read this for a class in college and don't remember anything about it 😳🙍🏻 8y

Once I had the language straight in my head, I really enjoyed this. It's a tough read, not least because of the dialect throughout. Life is hard in post-apocalyptic Inland (England). Riddley Walker is one admirable 12 year old!

Of course, having to start and finish my Patricia Briggs novel this weekend, means that I have to put Riddley Walker on hold. To be honest, even though I'm enjoying it, it's really hard work! I'm looking forward to the break!

Liberty I love him. 9y
Clare_Riley I keep forgetting he's only 12! He's a great lead character though. 9y
