Monster's Daughter
Monster's Daughter | Michelle Pretorius
16 posts | 7 read | 48 to read
Somewhere on the South African veldt, 1901: At the height of the Boer War, a doctor at a British concentraion camp conducts a series of grim experiments on Boer prisoners. His work ends in chaos, but two children survive: a boy named Benjamin, and a girl named Tessa One hundred years later, a disgraced young polce constable is reassigned to the sleepy South African town of Unie, where she makes a terrifying discovery: the body of a woman, burned beyond recognition. The crime soon leads her into her country's violent past a past that includes her father, a high-ranking police official under the apartheid regime, and the children left behind in that long ago concentration camp. Michelle Pretorius s epic debut weaves present and past together into a hugely suspenseful, masterfully plotted thriller that calls to mind Lauren Beukes s "The Shining Girls" and Tana French s "The Secret Place." With an explosive conclusion, it marks the emergence of a thrilling new writer."

It's a slow moving book but it's so good! The flashbacks from past to present is weaved seamlessly with this book. Keep track of the characters, as they appear and reappear a in both past and present and it's up to you to put the pieces together. The only thing is there's quite a bit of Afrikaans terminology. Needed to Google some terms. 😀

I was in the mood to buy books today so I had to do it. I went to college with the author of Monster's Daughter and got to read excerpts in workshops so I can't wait to read the full novel and see how it turned out! I also loved Geek Live by Katherine Dunn and was so excited to see her debut novel newly released in paperback. And Denis Johnson...because it's mandatory!

Day5 #feistyfeb #bestdebutsof2016 Here are six books I enjoyed that were debuts in 2016. Sleeping Giants and Homegoing were my favorites, followed closely by The Monster's Daughter. 📚👍

RealLifeReading Oh wow I missed out on so many 2016 books! The only one on your list I've read is Homegoing 7y
StephanieMarie I have homegoing on my to-read shelf at home, glad to hear you enjoyed it! 7y
Suzze I have Everything We Keep and Sleeping Giants on the shelf to read. Loved both Homegoing and The Last One. 7y
Suelizbeth Currently reading Sleeping Giants. Homegoing is in my TBR. 7y
DebinHawaii @RealLifeReading There's still plenty of time to read them! 😄 @StephanieMarie I listened to the audio and really enjoyed it. Not always an easy read or listen but very good.👍 @Suzze I loved Sleeping Giants so much! 📚👍 @Suelizbeth Both are really good! 📚❤️ 7y

Oh man, this was endlessly fascinating. Threads between the past and present, science, history, politics, injustice, and unexpected plot twists. I loved it, and know I want to learn so much more about South African history.

My plans for the rest of the night include finishing this book, watching tv, and letting a beyond exhausted pug sleep on my arm. Livy says that Pugs in the Park was fun and hot, and she loved getting to play with her sister Daisy Mae and brother Chunk, splashing in the wading pool, and getting lots of pets and treats. Livy's moms say that it was hot and tiring, and we're ready for bed even though it's only 4:45.

Hooked_on_books What a great day for Livy! 💕🐶 8y

Books and tea in my favorite Battlestar Galactica mug, a good start to Saturday. Trying to squeeze in a few chapters before loading all the weekend chores into today, since we'll be gone all day tomorrow to our pug rescue's big fundraiser.

TheBookDream Pug rescue? I love pugs! Wrinkly, snorty, adorable little dogs 😍 8y
bookishkai @TheBookDream yes, we volunteer with our local pug rescue. Tomorrow is Pugs in the Park: all the wrinkly, snorty, adorable puggies you could hope to meet. 8y
TheBookDream Cuuuute! My friend has an elderly pug (nearly 14) and I absolutely adore her. I'm not much of a dog person, but man are they cute, sassy little dogs. Have fun at your event! 8y

Poor Munchkin spiked a fever after gymnastics class, so she's an hour into an extended nap. I'm settling in to read some more, since the three pages I read in my car before work didn't satisfy my need to learn more. And I'm idly hoping that DadBoss manages a dr appt for Munchkin so I can get off early, go home, and read some more. (Not gonna lie, I love getting reading time during the day. Nap time, it's a nanny's happy hour!)

readinginthedark Aw, happy reading, sad sickling. 😕 8y

A good reminder for us all, I think, and a moment of inclusivity in this book that so far showing some of the worst things people are capable of in the name of power. 55 pages in and it's SO good. I'm finding the need to google a lot because, aside from Apartheid, I know very little about South Africa's history.

DebinHawaii I really liked this one. A good mystery and political thriller. It definitely had me googling more information about SA and its politics and such, not to mention many South African words and slang. 👍📚 8y
bookishkai @DebinHawaii I initially thought I'd have to google a lot of the slang and language-y things, since neither Dutch nor Afrikaans is even close to in my wheelhouse, but I actually understand a lot of it. So many fascinating things going on in this book, I can't wait to see how all the threads untangle. 8y
Theresa I feel like this book is talking right to me!! 😜 8y

Rough day yesterday, The Munchkin had an epic tantrum and didn't have a very good nap, and of course I LOVE going out and running errands all over town after working nine hours and driving for 1.5. So I soothed my soul with some fanfic last night/this morning, but now I'm ready to jump into this (yeah, yeah, I suck at reading monogamy).

ValerieAndBooks Hope the rest of the week is better! Don't feel bad about how you read -- I always have several books going and I know many here on Litsy do too. 8y
Megabooks I'm sorry! Glad you got some time to read today! 8y
Gleefulreader Reading monogamy is highly overrated. Here's hoping the rest of the week goes better for you! 8y

I'm about 40 pages into this book so far, and I'm amazed by the author's ability to craft such a rich atmosphere so early into the book. Looking forward to reading more!
