Deep into book 1 of the Malin Fors series, and I am enjoying it more & more with each page I read. Malin is a fiercely independent police superintendent, and she's tasked with investigating the murder of a man found horrifically mutilated and hanging in a tree. This book is uniquely contemplative - with both Malin and the victim's body exploring their thoughts on life & the afterlife. A very unique Scandi crime read so far! #crimefiction

I am loooving this book!!! Läckberg seriously knows how to write a layered, compelling police procedural with a big heart. This case is creeepy and I love how different threads of the story are coming together. Main character Erica is researching her next true crime book (she's a writer), and her research is becoming interwoven with her police officer husband's current case. Love it! #crimefiction

This book is action-packed already, and I'm only 50 pages in!!! ? I love how Läckberg always interweaves chapters from the past throughout her stories - I love trying to figure out how the characters in the flashback chapters will impact the story's central mystery. ? #crimefiction

My ONE qualm with this book so far: the writing is pretty choppy. That might be an issue with translation, or perhaps a result of the book having 2 authors? Or it could just be the book's style. Less than 50 pgs in, but fully absorbed in this police procedural already. This one has all the hallmarks of a piece of Nordic noir that I'm destined to love: it starts with a shocking act of violence, and promises a complex plot with a sharp eye for investigative details.

This book is nothing I expected. It's not particularly suspenseful, it's not particularly shocking -- but it IS deeply emotional and full of messed up characters with fascinating perspectives. I wasn't obsessed with this book, but I fully enjoyed it. Amy's writing is poetic & vivid.

Really enjoying this book so far. Julie was kidnapped from her home at 13; now, 8 years later, she reappears on her family's doorstep one night. But inconsistencies in her story soon make her mother question - is this really the same girl who was taken 8 years prior? 😱

Round 2 of me gushing about this book!! What I loved most about this book = how Lemaitre crafts a story that doesn't simply have a big twist—it has a big twist, and then it BUILDS on that twist in a crazy way!!! I could never have predicted the story's development, and I loved it so much.

*dies and goes to book heaven* this is probably my 2nd most-anticipated read of the year, and WOW did I devour it. Dividing my thoughts into 2 blurbs because this book deserves ALL the love. First things first: no plot description can do this book justice - it's ALL KINDS OF CRAY. Twisted & amazing.

I really enjoyed this one! Brimming with suspense & characters you can't trust, plus it has an INSANE ending. Like seriously, I finished the book yesterday and am still thinking about it. Not the strongest character development, but it moves along quickly & kept me totally engrossed!

Off to a great start!!! Emotional, brooding, and plenty of suspense. I'm hoping this book will be just what I need to cure how much I miss the twisty domestic thriller BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

I truly had high hopes for this book, and it started out very strong. But I had an utter lack of emotional connection with the characters, and what was billed as a shocking ending fell flat for me. Very disappointed not to have liked this one more 😔

I'm struggling with this book pretty hard. It started so strong, but I've lost interest. I'm nearly at the end, & I'm looking forward to the book's conclusion, but I just have almost no investment in the story's characters. Sadly my opinion of this one has gone fairly downhill in the last 100 pgs😔

I dipped into this book last night and have been utterly captivated by this unnerving story. Starting with one horrible, violent crime, this story quickly becomes an exploration of the psychological baggage of its characters. Creepy & tragic & an important conversation starter.

This book wasn't anything I expected, but I was happy to be surprised in such a moving way. This is hardly traditional Nordic Noir - it focuses on the human aspect of the story, developing seriously tragic characters. I enjoyed it a lot - not my favorite, but quite good!

Karin Fossum is an author who I've long wanted to read, but never got around to until yesterday!! I'm currently reading HELL FIRE, her upcoming novel. So far it's very methodical - not a fast-paced read, but a deliberately plotted police procedural. Really enjoying so far!!

This was a super addictive & engaging read - I totally devoured it. However, it's definitely not the most complex writing - this is more of the dessert kind of book, aka a book to read when you just want a bookish treat. Pick it up for a quick beach read!

One of my favorite things about this book: it includes "journal pages" throughout. I've been loving these additions to the story - they make the character who wrote them seem all the more real, & we witness his thoughts growing darker & darker as the story goes on?

DON'T MISS THIS READ. (It deserves the all-caps.) this is a stellar US debut for Bjørk - a layered, complex plot, disturbing central case, and female protagonist who would make Lisbeth Salander proud. I LOVED this book.

A definite departure from Nesbø's Harry Hole series, but I loved it. This book introduces readers to a surprisingly sensitive man in an unsavory profession. A tragic, contemplative story with the moody atmosphere I always crave from Nesbø's books.

Love, love this book. A gripping mystery complete with shocking violence, religious fanaticism, a chilling atmosphere, and a badass leading lady. Perfect summer reading material!

More proof that Herman Koch is a genius. Like THE DINNER, this book explores how ordinary people can do horrible things. Grotesque and appalling, and I'm still thinking about it YEARS after reading it.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. A short read cleverly structured in sections named after courses of a meal, this book is whip-smart and deliciously misanthropic. Herman Koch is one of my favorite authors.

Jakob Melander is a truly underrated talent on the Scandinavian crime fiction scene. This is an entertaining intro to his Lars Winkler series - a gritty police procedural with a big heart.

KILLER DEAL is a good choice if you're looking for a Scandinavian crime read for the beach. Not the most complex plot or intricate writing, but entertaining and fast-paced! Plus, it has a CRAZY plot twist that left me dying for more.

Freakin' BRILLIANT read. Taught, suspenseful, and gory - I couldn't get enough. An unexpected tragic love story rounds out a horror novel that would make Stephen King proud.

LOVE this book. Perfect summertime crime reading: atmospheric, fast-paced, and creepy!! I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed Ware's first book (IN A DARK, DARK WOOD) but I loved this one even more!

My first review on Litsy HAS to go to this book. A brilliant, gripping, unnerving masterpiece - a book that got under my skin more than any other. Read this for a brazen story exploring the affects of abuse, both physical & emotional, on the human psyche. Can't recommend it highly enough.
