The Autistic Brain
The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum | Temple Grandin, Richard Panek
10 posts | 12 read | 20 to read
A cutting-edge account of the latest science of autism, from the best-selling author and advocate When Temple Grandin was born in 1947, autism had only just been named. Today it is more prevalent than ever, with one in 88 children diagnosed on the spectrum. And our thinking about it has undergone a transformation in her lifetime: Autism studies have moved from the realm of psychology to neurology and genetics, and there is far more hope today than ever before thanks to groundbreaking new research into causes and treatments. Now Temple Grandin reports from the forefront of autism science, bringing her singular perspective to a thrilling journey into the heart of the autism revolution. Weaving her own experience with remarkable new discoveries, Grandin introduces the neuroimaging advances and genetic research that link brain science to behavior, even sharing her own brain scan to show us which anomalies might explain common symptoms. We meet the scientists and self-advocates who are exploring innovative theories of what causes autism and how we can diagnose and best treat it. Grandin also highlights long-ignored sensory problems and the transformative effects we can have by treating autism symptom by symptom, rather than with an umbrella diagnosis. Most exciting, she argues that raising and educating kids on the spectrum isnt just a matter of focusing on their weaknesses; in the science that reveals their long-overlooked strengths she shows us new ways to foster their unique contributions. From the aspies in Silicon Valley to the five-year-old without language, Grandin understands the true meaning of the word spectrum. The Autistic Brain is essential reading from the most respected and beloved voices in the field.

Grandin does an excellent job going over the history of autism diagnosis, sharing her own autism experiences, and discussing ways to approach autism. I wasn‘t always a fan of some of her leaps and generalizations, or of her assumption that autistic people (anyone, really) must be useful and productive. Overall, an interesting and thought-provoking read. #Autism #ColoradoLocalAuthor

I‘ve mostly been doodling, drawing, and putting together projects for interviews recently, so I haven‘t had much to share with #Litsycrafters. Today I decided to do a bit of work (while listening to the tagged book) on this project while my husband worked on his own project. I burned holes in the tops of all the cds so I can string them up when they‘re painted. Next step: deciding what to paint on the other disks 🤔 #AudioCrafting #AudioPainting

A really rare and valuable example of a science professor who knows what they‘re talking about when surveying neurology studies who is also an autistic person themselves able to talk about her lived experience. One of my favourite books on autism I‘ve read. Maybe the top one I‘d recommend to someone who struggles with the question ‘what is going on inside that persons head?‘ Super well written and informative

Come-read-with-me I‘ve seen her speak several times. What an amazing person! Have you read the book authored by her Mother? It‘s all about raising this unique child. So good. 4y
melissajayne I saw her speak about 15 years ago; very fascinating story. 4y
TheKidUpstairs Have you seen the HBO movie with Claire Danes? I thought it was wonderfully done. 4y

Eggs @Come-read-with-me @melissajayne I did hear her speak a few years back!! And I‘ve read several of her books-the one written by her mother was powerful. (edited) 4y
Eggs @TheKidUpstairs yes it was well done. 4y
Come-read-with-me @Eggs I think I first became truly inspired by her when I read the essay by Oliver Saks called “An Anthropologist on Mars.” The essay was so insightful! 4y
Eggs @Come-read-with-me I will have to read that essay. Some of my colleagues in SpEd have eschewed TG and her books as unrealistic/stereotypical about autism. But I believe the message here is finding and nurturing one‘s strengths 4y
Come-read-with-me @Eggs Agreed. I understand the idea of families hoping to have their child become the next T.G. and ASD is a broad spectrum, but I think she has added a great understanding fir people who are not in the field about how not to judge someone by their label. But that‘s just my opinion. 4y
Eggs Well said 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Paula @Come-read-with-me 4y
Come-read-with-me @Eggs Thank you! ASD is my area of research and I‘m passionate about it! 4y
Eggs @Come-read-with-me I can tell and that‘s wonderful! 4y

I have no words for how much this book is helping me. It gives me an insight to my four year old when he can't tell me what is going on.

One thing I always try to point out to parents of a child newly diagnosed with autism is that the good far outweighs the bad. In fact I wouldn't even say there is anything bad about it. Difficult yes, but not bad. And sadly the difficulties come mostly from neurotypicals wanting square pegs to fit in round holes. My son (13) has autism, more specifically Asperger's, and he is amazing.
