Some authors have a lovely, poetic use of language but can‘t seem to move a story along. Others can write a compelling story but lack beauty in their words. This author does both very successfully. What a wonderful book!

I‘m thoroughly enjoying this novel set in Antarctica about two scientists studying penguins. The book‘s timeline is fascinating — the reader knows from the first page that a shipwreck has occurred, and the chapters circle first toward and then away from the tragic event. The suspense is killing me...!

It's St. Patrick's Day? You go ahead and go out...we're comfy right here.....
It's a grab a book, break into the secret hidden stash of Girl Scout cookies and shut out the rest of the world kind of night 🙄
Happy Wednesday everyone! This is next up...I love reading about Antarctica so I have high hopes or this one 🤗
This is a story of love and loss between two naturalists studying penguins in Antartica. Each chapter follows a timeline before|after the sinking of passenger ship Australis in Antarctica. For this being her first novel, a wealth of research by Raymond has been written into it's chapters which peeked my interest in Antarctica's landscape, the effects of tourism, its bird species, habitat and their plight. A great read!
Midge Raymond was inspired to write her novel after a life changing trip she took to Antarctica. She also volunteered once to participate in a penguin census in Argentina! This book has been on my TBR for a while but after hearing her read, I'm moving it up to the top of the pile! #wordstockpdx
One of the beautiful venues for #wordstockpdx. Also in typical Portland fashion.... it's raining.
I don't typically read contemporary romance novels but I LOVED this book. Yes there was a romance, and it was a significant element of the overall story, but it was so much more than that. I appreciated the non-linear storyline which allowed you to learn things at the most emotional moments. And the setting of Antarctica came to vivid life. #mustread
Enjoying this Antarctic love/survival story. Anyone else read it?
Really wanted to like this but Deb and Keller's relationship was just so not appealing that I barely finished this book. It's saving grace? Midge Raymond does such a fantastic job at describing Antarctica; her writing is so vivid and full of wonderful imagery that this icy, desolate and unwelcoming continent comes to life within the book's pages.
Now I want to go to Antarctica. But only if it's alright with the penguins.
So I'm still listening to the audiobook of The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards, but what's the fun of reading only one book at a time? Am I right? So last night, as part of my bedtime reading I started My Last Continent by Midge Raymond. I just find Antarctica to be so fascinating. 💕🐧🚢
I needed extra coffee after staying up to midnight to find out what happened with the shipwreck, information that is teased out from the first chapter on. Really complex and page-turning plotting.
With its deft maneuvers in time, before and after the shipwreck, this love story spools out amid icebergs and penguins as it raced to a stunning and satisfying conclusion. Photo is author Midge Raymond at Powell's Wednesday night.
Took this at work the other day. The first two look THE SAME but even the third similarity is uncanny. 💫🌙☀️🌟First yellow covers and now starry skies! I should start a similar cover series on my blog 😜 Any other themes people are noticing?
This novel, about a tourist shipwreck on Antarctica, spoke to me. I visited the continent last year on a small vessel like the Cormorant and the trip changed my life. This book is beautiful and painful, and I can't quite describe how much I loved it. It made me ache with longing to be back.
I love books that send me off looking for visuals like maps and penguins.
This book completely teleported me into another world. It was a slow burn, but a good one, with beautiful language fitting of its setting.
