The Girl Who Could Fly
The Girl Who Could Fly | Victoria Forester
You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods. Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie. Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops. Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities. School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences. Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore. At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly. Praise for Victoria Forester and The Girl Who Could Fly: "It's the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men. I was smiling the whole time (except for the part where I cried). I gave it to my mom, and I'm reading it to my kidsit's absolutely multigenerational. Prepare to have your heart warmed." Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga "In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Piper McCloud, the late-in-life daughter of farmers...The story soars, just like Piper, with enough loop-de-loops to keep kids uncertain about what will come next....Best of all are the book's strong, lightly wrapped messages about friendship and authenticity and the difference between doing well and doing good."--Booklist, Starred Review "Forester's disparate settings (down-home farm and futuristic ice-bunker institute) are unified by the rock-solid point of view and unpretentious diction... any child who has felt different will take strength from Piper's fight to be herself against the tide of family, church, and society."--The Horn Book Review The Girl Who Could Fly is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

This was my #bookspin book! Now I‘ve read two from #bookspinbingo. This was recommended by the fifth grader that I tutor and I can see why she likes it- it was too dark and also too “on the nose” for my taste, but I can see why a child would like it and I enjoyed the ending!

This a really fun series that mixes X-Men, Heroes, and other superhero tropes. A country girl discovers she has the ability to fly and is recruited into a special, top secret facility and meets other children with extraordinary abilities. However, something is not right at this institution and discovers how nefarious it truly is. Joining forces with her special peers, they band together to save the world.

AMAZING. A work of art. The first young adult book i ever read when i was 10. This book holds precious memories for me. You really start to worry for Piper. Whether she‘ll be able to fit in, make new friends and escape the institution. Piper is such a unique childlike character who has endless curiousity about the world. Unlike any other. A must read

These covers caught my eye at the bookstore and the blurb on the back sealed the deal.

Looks like a fun read. 🤞

I mean, with a description of 'Little House on the Prairie meets X-Men' how could I possibly resist? 😁

jfalkens I loved them! I'm anxiously awaiting the third(tagged). 6y

When homeschooled farm girl Piper McCloud reveals her ability to fly, she is quickly taken to a secret government facility to be trained with other exceptional children, but she soon realizes that something is very wrong and try‘s to escape.

“Piper decided to jump off the roof. She didn't make plans in the event she did fall, if you land on your head, you don't need any plans from that point on. So that's what she did, jumped clean off her roof.”

#petpeeve # 2. When you are two books in a series and both say paperback, but they are not the same. They are two different sizes. In the long run I don't care but this annoys me.

Jess_Read_This Oh.. that is a bad one. 7y
lisakoby The worst ever. 7y
Ellen Different publishers? 7y
silentrequiem Oh yes! I have a favorite trilogy I read as a tween. Each book was released in a smaller size than the one before. Argh. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Ellen I think so. But it didn't say that ok book Outlet. 7y

This one was incredible for a very long list of reasons, but the thing I found so refreshing is that the characters are exceptionally young; Piper herself is nine, and the eldest, Conrad, is only twelve. Their childlike view of the world gives the book a uniqueness and depth not seen in very much fiction today.

Starting off my #litsy with a little known favorite of mine, Victoria Forrester's The Girl Who Could Fly! It may be a children's book, but Forrester does a wonderful job portraying depression in a way that neurotypicals could understand. The characters and their powers are as unique as their names. This book... It gives me life. It's such a bittersweet mix, but that's what makes it special to me.
