I really enjoyed this 1927 mystery. It was originally published as a serial and you can tell - all the chapters end with dramatic pronouncements, and the narrative can feel a little choppy. I also was slightly confused by some of the detecting decisions haha On the whole, while the dialogue and narrative was somewhat lacking, the actual mystery was quite good, and although the ending was a little crazy, I still went with it. @catiewithac gifted ⬇

A short classic English mystery! I knew who the killer was early on but there are some fun wrong directions.

This was my first book by Margery Allingham but it certainly won‘t be my last. This was a cleverly written book; like most during the golden age of crime it was a shorter book but it was very enjoyable even given this. In fact I think I preferred it to many of the Agatha Christie books that I have read. A very clever and interesting end that raises some moral questions. I hope to read her Albert Campion series on the back of this book. Recommended

Here‘s one from the TBR with a pretty #EnglishHouse cover. I‘ve never read any Allingham before but she‘s one of the greats from the Golden Age of mysteries.

My first non-Campion Allingham and it's really good. Twisty and unexpected and clever. Allingham definitely not as well read as she should be.
