Closing Time
Closing Time: The Sequel to Catch-22 | Joseph Heller
6 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
A darkly comic and ambitious sequel to the American classic Catch-22.In Closing Time, Joseph Heller returns to the characters of Catch-22, now coming to the end of their lives and the century, as is the entire generation that fought in World War II: Yossarian and Milo Minderbinder, the chaplain, and such newcomers as little Sammy Singer and giant Lew, all linked, in an uneasy peace and old age, fighting not the Germans this time, but The End. Closing Time deftly satirizes the realities and the myths of America in the half century since WWII: the absurdity of our politics, the decline of our society and our great cities, the greed and hypocrisy of our business and culture -- with the same ferocious humor as Catch-22.Closing Time is outrageously funny and totally serious, and as brilliant and successful as Catch-22 itself, a fun-house mirror that captures, at once grotesquely and accurately, the truth about ourselves.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 225.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Mehso-so

I read Catch-22 in 1967, when I was 13 and loved it‘s insanity and dark humor. I waited til now to read Closing Time (C-22‘s sequel). I‘m now 68, the age of Yossarian in this book. At this age I can appreciate the characters‘ reflections on their lives and their preoccupation with their mortality. It took several chapters for Heller to approach the humor and style of C-22. Disappointingly, the book just stopped rather than concluded. Sad.

Reading is all messed up this month. Couldn't concentrate on anything and a lot going on around me. But got some pre-loved books 📚 in a sale so that's something good.

tenar Hello, it‘s been a while and just returning the check-in favor! Had a chance to read anything, or is it still very busy for you? 3y
ishan0986 @tenar hey thanks for checking in 🤗. My college schedule leaves little time and energy for reading. I hope to have a better schedule and also post during the weekend. Once again thanks for checking in. 3y
tenar Whew, I know how that is. I read very, very little for fun when I was in college. I hope that you can enjoy your studies somewhat, even when they‘re hectic. Glad to hear from you, good luck! 👍🏻 3y

I have such bittersweet feelings about bookstore closings. On one hand, this represents the quantifiable loss of hundreds of jobs, as well as, on a more abstract level, the inexorable decline of brick and mortar bookshops in favor of faceless giants of e-commerce. On the other hand, those sweet deals tho. #bookvulture

Really sad news for anyone in MA or RI - less than 2 weeks to score some major book hauls from this treasure. 😿📚
