The Bells
The Bells | Richard Harvell
8 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Dazzling, enchanting and epic, The Bells is the confession of a thief, kidnapper and unlikely lover -- a boy with the voice of an angel whose exquisite sense of hearing becomes both his life's tragic curse and its greatest blessing. Moses Froben was born in a belfry high in the Swiss Alps, the bastard son of a deaf-mute woman banished to the church tower to ring each day the Loudest and Most Beautiful Bells in the land. His life is simple but he is content, until the day his father recognizes Moses's singular sense of hearing and its power to expose his sins. Cast into the world with only his ears to protect and guide him, Moses finds refuge in the choir of the great Abbey of St. Gall and becomes its star singer, only to endure the horrifying act of castration meant to preserve his angelic voice and turn him into a musico. In a letter to his son, Moses recounts his humble birth in eighteenth-century Switzerland and his life as a novice monk, and tells of the two noble friends -- and a forbidden lover -- whom he cherished during his chaotic years in Mozart's Vienna as apprentice to the great Gaetano Guadagni, and even as he ascended Europe's most celebrated stages as Lo Svizzero. But in this letter he will also reveal the astonishing secrets of his past and answer the question that has shadowed his fame: how did Moses Froben, world-renowned musico, come to raise a son who by all rights he could never have sired? From the Hardcover edition.

#WinterGames2021 #FestivePhotoChallenge #teamgamesleigh The closest I could get to #silverbells — the handbells at the school where i taught. I didn‘t know anything about handbells when I started teaching the class, but I fell in love with them.

slategreyskies I used to play in a handbell choir. So cool!! 🔔 ❤️!! 3y
Susanita I love handbells! 3y
StayCurious Very cool! 3y
Reggie There is this commercial for Amazon where this family is playing handbells and the song is Take on Me. So cute. And also, my second grade teacher Mrs.Martin was in a handbell choir at the Methodist church. It was real neat when they gave concerts. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I love handbells! I miss playing (in elementary school)! 3y

#30JuneBooks - Favorite: There are plots that I don‘t remember and characters that I can‘t recall, but when I see the book cover or hear the title mentioned in random conversation, I get a feeling, a vague memory that something shifted inside of me and there was an alteration in the world‘s fabric the hour that I completed that book, that is what defines a favorite book for me. I don‘t remember the entire storyline of The Bells, but I remember👇🏽

Nute trying to catch my breath while reading certain passages. I remember thinking that words strung together in a particular way is a gift to every human. I remember feeling music move through this story as if I was sitting at symphony and my entire body was a listening vessel. I remember this love story...so powerful and beautiful that it transcended who loved whom and became a realization of the charity of love, a treatise on agápe?? 5y
Cathythoughts Beautiful description ♥️. Stacked 5y
Nute and the true giving of one‘s self entirely to another. It‘s a beautiful story, but it is quiet in its presence so you must be willing to be patient. I feel that it is worth a commitment. Highly recommended! 5y
Leftcoastzen What a stellar description! Sounds interesting. 5y

rretzler So...what app did you use to get all of your books in the one picture? Several of the apps I‘ve tried have limited me to no more than 16 books/pictures. Or did you not use a collage? Please enlighten me - I‘m very tech savvy, just point me in the right direction. 5y
LauraJ I liked Snow Crash, but I read it in the 90‘s. Does it seem dated now? 5y

Pickpick

Oldest selection on my TBR list - Added January 8, 2011.

I have no idea why it took me eight years to finally read this book. All I can suggest is that everyone look through their TBR lists to see if they have any hidden gems there. This book was certainly a surprise to me. I don‘t know who told me about it or how I even ended up my list but I am so happy that I read finally it. Definitely a 5-star read. If you like historical fiction, read this!

Chelsea.Poole Unexpected gems are the best!!! 6y

I literally have 300 books on my TBR list. There are four that have been there since 2011. I think it‘s time to read them or ditch them.

wanderinglynn I enjoyed The Alchemist. I'd recommend it. 👍 6y
suvata @wanderinglynn Great 👍🏻 6y
twohectobooks I have a tbr that‘s over 1000 items long on goodreads. I added WAY too many books last year so I‘m trying to cut back for a while over the next few months. 6y

suvata @twohectobooks Wow! That‘s a lot of books. 6y
twohectobooks @suvata yeah I‘ve gotten carried away! My physical tbr is well under 50 books so that somewhat balances it out?! 😳 6y
merelybookish I read a blog post by someone who re-starts her TBR every year. I thought that sounded intriguing and kind of freeing. 6y
suvata @merelybookish that sounds very nice but I don‘t know if I‘m capable of pulling it off. LOL 6y
suvata @twohectobooks Other than those few books from 2011, the next books start from 2015. I think I might try to read them in that TBR order for a while and see what year I can get up to. 6y
merelybookish @suvata Yeah, I don't know that I could either. But it made me think there are probably lots of titles I could purge. 6y
suvata @irre I have heard that often. So, I am glad that it‘s on my list. 6y
