A fast-paced semi-memoir about diners, drugs, and California in the 1970s"""Over Easy" is a brilliant portrayal of a familiar coming-of-age story. After being denied financial aid to cover her last year of art school, Margaret finds salvation from the straightlaced world of college and the earnestness of both hippies and punks in the wisecracking, fast-talking, drug-taking group she encounters at the Imperial Cafe, where she makes the transformation from Margaret to Madge. At first she mimics these new and exotic grown-up friends, trying on the guise of adulthood with some awkward but funny stumbles. Gradually she realizes that the adults she looks up to are a mess of contradictions, misplaced artistic ambitions, sexual confusion, dependencies, and addictions. "Over Easy "is equal parts time capsule of late 1970s life in California with its deadheads, punks, disco rollers, casual sex, and drug use and bildungsroman of a young woman who grows from a naive, sexually inexperienced art-school dropout into a self-aware, self-confident artist. Mimi Pond's chatty, slyly observant anecdotes create a compelling portrait of a distinct moment in time. "Over Easy" is an immediate, limber, and precise semi-memoir narrated with an eye for the humor in every situation."

Had wanted to read this for awhile and checked it out so I could read it while in Maine. I finished it before I got there and it is not a thin book: I just couldn't stop reading it. Never worked in food service myself but it was still entertaining.

Cooper is displaying my first #24in48 read of the day, the semi-memoir graphic novel Over Easy. I had to move his ear numerous times to get this shot. He don‘t care.

last time I was at the library I picked up a bunch of graphic novels at random so I would have some shorter reads for the #24in48 readathon, so I really don't know much about it at all but theses #endpapers do make it look interesting

I understand the how a seemingly menial job can throw you into the orbit of people who wouldn't normally speak to you. And how easy it is to get caught up in the drama of work place and even find a bit of magic in it. Over Easy does a really good job of showing what that looks like and how it feels. But it didn't really go anywhere, and the conclusion felt abrupt.

Just started this. I'm a sucker for graphic novel memoirs written by women.

The author spent some time working at a diner in the late 1970s. Hijinks ensue. Got a bit tired for me but ready about fellow customer service people is always a fun time.
