My mind is in such turmoil that i really need to write to ease my anxiety. However, I‘m not thinking clearly enough to just write so i went to a late night friend to help me come up with a subject to write about.
“Phone Tag.
Write a fairly long, complicated phone conversation overheard by someone in the room. All three people — the listener in the room, the caller, and the person on the other end of the line — are involved with each other...”

5? This is really a fun little book on writing. It's probably equal parts advice and writing exercises, but the exercises do take center stage. For NaNoWriMo I got a lot out of the "Advice for Writing Books" section. If you like a good writing prompt, this book is for you. It's probably geared toward someone who has done a little writing before, but I could still see this working for someone new to writing as well.
??????

GingerAntics Love that the approach to improving one's writing isn't about reading about writing, but actually writing. If you enjoy writing (sometimes in goofy little chunks), this book is for you!!! #creativewriting #nanowrimo #litsynano #writersoflitsy 6y

This is officially the 🤨STRNAGEST🤨 writing exercise I have ever seen. It‘s almost like creative writing/original fiction, grown up madlibs.
#creativrwriting #3amepiphany #briankiteley #madlibs #writingexercise

wanderinglynn It sounds like a crazy version of mad libs! 🤣 6y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn right? Kiteley talked about doing it in workshops or classes and the giggling that ensues. 😂 It sounds like madlibs to me!!! 6y
jmofo 😑 um...nope. 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo 🤣😂🤣 it sounds slightly dumb the more I think about it. It‘s almost like something you‘d do when you‘re like 19 and slightly drunk, while simultaneously majoring in creative writing. 6y

Reading up on writing women and men, and this was an interesting little tidbit.

Love how he‘s all, “You‘re a writer. You write words. All this other stuff is great, but you still write words.”
#briankiteley #3amepiphany #words
(Which of course makes me think of Hamlet lol)

Always looking for new approaches to developing all of my characters...no matter the genre...no matter how significant they seem within a narrative.

To my fellow Litsy Writers, have any of you discovered something like this about yourself? If so, how did you stumble upon it? This is seriously the only book I‘ve read that mentions something like this.
#writersoflitsy #briankiteley #3amepiphany

Yes, this is highlighted with three different colours. lol

CocoReads I‘ve never really thought about it but I do have a lot of trouble writing the steamier stuff in my books. And... well, I‘m sure I can chalk it up to just good old fashioned embarrassment at church people and my mother reading it. Which they haven‘t so far, but if I ever was published....well, you get the idea. 🤭 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads lol I can see that. I tend to let know one I know in person know about the things I write in that particular genre. I also tend to not make it public, in case it ever were to be found by someone who is looking for my academic writing (in the future) and accidentally stumble upon that. 6y
CocoReads Good point. Heck I won‘t even let my hubs read it. Although he‘s never asked either. Just my bestie and my sister so far 6y

GingerAntics @CocoReads I‘ve never really thought of things I can‘t/won‘t write about. I seems I‘ve written about just about everything in the time I‘ve been writing. I even wrote my first continuing story (my first attempt at a novel I guess) in third grade that would raise total red flags these days. I‘m surprised my teacher didn‘t call my parents. 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads that‘s what I do. I write that sort of thing for me, and if I have a friend who also enjoys what a write then that‘s just a bonus for them. 😂 Although it could be fun to just “accidentally” leave something for your hubby to find and act all “oops” when he asks about it...just to see the look on his face. I‘m twisted like that, though. 6y
CocoReads Lol I remember writing about a psych patient in 8th grade and did lots of bookreports on Stephen king, Manson, and terrorism. But eh, it was the 80s—I figured they just figured I was a weird kid but harmless. 6y
CocoReads Ha! He knows what I‘m writing—just he‘s not big on romance. But he does put up with and is amused by my rock star crushes. 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads I guess this wasn‘t too far distant from that. This would have been early 90s, so mandatory reporting of suspected things going on with a kid didn‘t exist. I remember finding it when we moved to TX and thinking how did cps not get a call on this. I even drew pictures!!! lol 6y
GingerAntics @CocoReads best hubby ever. One of my best friends says her and her husband have an agreement - they can look at whoever they want, just not touching. lol 6y
CocoReads @GingerAntics that‘s our agreement too 6y
Texreader Yes absolutely. There were pieces of my childhood that made me subject to bullying and humiliation. On the one hand I have thought about writing about it to open up hearts and minds to these things. But I find I cannot face those things honestly to this day. 6y
jmofo I‘ve seen this sort of thing more in the self help styled writing books. It is something, to think on. There is still a lot I choose not to look at, forget about writing about, although I do a significant amount of processing through my writing. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics I am glad you‘re starting these discussions, btw. 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader wow, really? I guess put that way there are parts of my childhood I‘ve tried writing, but it never quite works. 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo there are writing meets self help books? Really? You‘re welcome. I honestly had never read anything like that before. I must have forgotten reading that section of the intro last time around. I‘m just happy I have other writers to talk to!!! 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo the impromptu Litsy writers workshop. lol 6y
wanderinglynn Hm, interesting. I‘ve never really thought about it either. 6y
jmofo It‘s difficult for me to find community so I am very happy you‘re doing all of this on Listy. I‘ve read The Artist‘s Way and some stuff on “Proprioceptive Writing” and they both rely heavily on ignoring this editor, if not flat out chasing it away with content. 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo what is “proprioceptive writing”? That sounds fancy and complicated. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics that it is. It‘s a sort of morning pages style thing when you have a candle burning and music playing and you write what you‘re thinking then you write-ask yourself why you thought that then you write-answer yourself. I tried it for a while. There are of course books and retreats and stuff. I just checked out a book from the library. It is certainly an interesting exercise but it is a lot. 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo @wanderinglynn @Texreader @CocoReads FOLDING CLOTHES!!! I absolutely, positively, NEVER have characters fold clothes. They‘ll cook, change a tire, bite their nails, mix strawberry milk as random things to be doing while talking, but they never EVER fold clothes...and they‘re not starting now. 6y
GingerAntics Ah, the childhood trauma of folding clothes. lol 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics 🤣🤣🤣 6y
JazzFeathers I actually think that if we write honestly, writing is exactly what will help us go beyond those blocks. 6y
GingerAntics @JazzFeathers that‘s probably a fair point. 6y

I learned to write (and not make an entire story one long sentence - I was 7) by writing. This approach makes perfect sense to me. Love that one of the few schools to offer a PhD in creative writing using these ideas and exercises (because the dean of that program wrote the book). I feel like that legitimises this way of learning and improving your writing.

Bought this book at the same time as Wonderbook, but I‘ve used it several times since getting it. I‘m looking forward to hanging out with my characters with these writing exercises. Between this book and Wonderbook, I definitely prefer this book. It‘s less about do‘s and don‘t‘s, and more about the joy of writing to expand your abilities.

My eye-opener is that all of us want to feel content, to feel important; to that extent, treat each person as important, the same way you would want to be treated, and all that goodness and kindness will return to you.
Thanks abbs for your giveaway!!!💕💕

The book I'm carting around in my laptop bag doesn't have a picture on the cover. (#booktober day 3) Bonus: It gives me a +2 to crafting books of my own.
