The Liar
The Liar | Ayelet Gundar-Goshen
7 posts | 3 read | 10 to read
From the award-winning author of Waking Lions, a novel about how one lie can change everything, when a teenaged girl's scream -- and the false assumption that comes from it -- radiates through a street, a neighborhood, and a city, and turns lives upside down. Nofar is an average -- very average -- teenage girl working in an ice cream parlor at the end of summer. Dozens of customers come to the shop every day, but no one gives her a second glance--she is not one of those girls that the eye lingers on. But Nofar's world changes completely when a well-known TV presenter comes into the shop. Bitter about his own failures, he insults and humiliates her and she flees in tears. The presenter, who is still waiting for his change, chases her and the girl screams. Nofar's shouts alert the neighbors, and to her surprise everyone is convinced that the man tried to sexually assault her. And she decides to let them believe it. For the first time in her life, Nofar finds herself the center of attention. Her lie turns her into a kind of Cinderella, as the plain, awkward ice cream seller becomes a media princess. Meanwhile, one of the only people who knows what really happened demands a price for his silence. Written with dark humor and deep insight into the shadowy side of human nature, The Liar is a story about how one little lie can make a huge difference. In a world of media connectivity and alternate facts, the scream of one girl can make an entire city tweet and howl.

A 17-year-old girl lies about an attempted assault. She doesn‘t do it with ill intentions, somehow gets sucked into the lie&her life after the lie changes so positively that she feels she can‘t say the truth. She‘s the main liar in the novel, but all characters lie. Some lies are bigger, some smaller.Wonderful thought-provoking book, builds tension until the end, provides insight into the psychology of humans, raises questions of moralsðics.

emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB Can I be honest?? I don‘t hate many things but I hated Owen meany 🤭 It seems to be very loved on Litsy but Owen drove me nuts!! I alternated between audio and print and the audio squeaky voice was too much for me....perhaps if I did print only I would have felt differently??? (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Woohoo 🎉 🙌🏻

Cinfhen I LOVED Owen but THE LIAR was HORRIBLE 😖😫 4y
BarbaraBB Owen on audio must be horrible! That voice! In print it already drove me crazy (all those capitals!). My husband literally threw the book in a corner and I couldn‘t blame him. But I ended up loving the book. That was a long long time ago though. 🤷🏻‍♀️😀 4y
emilyhaldi I think I threw the book at one point too!!! I was certainly yelling obscenities 🤣🤣 @BarbaraBB 4y
emilyhaldi @Cinfhen something we can agree on!!! I think The Liar is my most hated book EVER!!! It makes you wonder how some books make it to publishing?!?!? 🤮 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job! Sorry it was such a mixed bunch! 📚♥️🎉 4y
Reviewsbylola The Liar was truly incredible, as far as how bad it was. 4y

I‘ve been missing books that are easy-to-read like this. So it was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Got to page 90 before I had to admit this book is not very good 😝That‘s my second bail of the day😳

rockpools Wow! You‘ll be claiming @shawnmooney ‘s title at this rate 😉. Hope the next one sticks. 5y
shawnmooney I bailed in the first chapter on her first book. :-) 😍 5y
TrishB But making me laugh 😂 which is good! 5y

keithmalek The description uses the term "alternate facts." It shouldn't. It legitimizes the term. 5y
Cinfhen Hi 👋 @shawnmooney I really LOVED her book Waking Lions so I had high hopes for this book...but it truly sucked 😜what‘s new with you and your lovely guy??? Hope you‘re both well xxx 5y
Cinfhen I‘m just pleased and shocked I made it as far as page 90 @RachelO @TrishB @keithmalek I‘m wondering if because the book was written in Hebrew originally the wording/ translation played a part in my bailing...it was awkward. Same complaint I had with my earlier bail .... 5y
TrishB Some translations can be so clunky they ruin the read. 5y
Reviewsbylola Omg Cindy I‘m reading this now for #darguschfamilymarkupbookclub and it is AWFUL. I am so pissed I can‘t bail. The author uses similes at about 100x the rate she should. 4y
Cinfhen I feel for you... it was SO BAD!!! SO SO BAD / who chose it @Reviewsbylola ???? What a waste of your reading time 😖 4y
Reviewsbylola It is Anne‘s pick and I‘m desperately hoping she doesn‘t read my comments in the book because I can‘t hold back. @emilyhaldi is up next and I‘ve already warned her. 😂 4y
emilyhaldi Ok reading this now... Coincidentally just made it to page 90. Cindy- HOW did you make it that far before bailing?! 😆 I have wanted to bail every page that I‘ve read so far- it‘s pure torture 😝 @Reviewsbylola @Cinfhen 4y
Cinfhen It‘s SOOOOOOO bad!!!!! I kept thinking it might improve @emilyhaldi and I really liked her first book a lot 4y
Reviewsbylola It‘s literally one of the worst books I‘ve ever finished. 4y

I started a new on-the-treadmill-only audiobook. Here‘s hoping it keeps me motivated! Has anyone else read this one?

I had an early morning doctor appointment located right next door to a new bookstore ( sometimes Monday‘s aren‘t sooo bad😁) Picked up these 2❣️❣️Excited for the new Ayelet Gundar-Goshen novel. She‘s an Israeli author who wrote Waking Lions which I really enjoyed. And I was emotionally exhausted by Tattooist of Auschwitz but couldn‘t pass over the sister story; Cilka‘s Journey.

Cathythoughts Tagged book sounds really good ! Maybe I should read Waking Lions first ?! 🤔 5y
Cinfhen I‘ll let you know if this one is any good. Her other book also had a lot of moral ambiguities which I love to read @Cathythoughts Books are translated from Hebrew so occasionally a phrase didn‘t sound right in my English speaking brain but it didn‘t take away from the story (edited) 5y
JenReadsAlot Cilka's Journey was a tough, but great book. 5y
Cinfhen I‘m sure @JenReadsAlot I know @DGRachel bailed it was too sad for her 😭😭😭 5y
arubabookwoman I really liked Waking Lions. From the synopsis it sounds like The Liar might involve a somewhat similar theme? 5y
