Faithfully Religionless | Timber Hawkeye
22 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Discover the difference between feelings and emotions, the disparity between truths and facts, and the countless benefits of mindful living. When his pursuit of happiness in Corporate America feels counterproductive, Timber Hawkeye escapes the flourescent-lit hell of his cubicle in Seattle and sets out to fully embrace the stress-free lifestyle of Hawaii. Intrigued and curious about what people believe (and why they believe what they do), he questions everything he ever thought was true and discovers the beauty of letting go. If you consider yourself spiritual but not religious, then you're going to love this inspirational book. And if you want to lead a simple and uncomplicated life with happiness at your fingertips, then you'll want to read this page-turner more than once! "It's not that I'm against religion, I simply don't have one (nor do I believe that we need it to be ethical). My faith is doctrine-free, with a definition of God that doesn't conjure a white man in the sky who dispenses blessings for good behavior and harsh judgments to condemn the bad. That's because I don't believe God does that; religion does. You see, faith is a spiritual practice of continually letting go of certainty, of ego, and of the underlying need to know, while religion is a ceremonial tradition of hanging on, clinging to concrete dogmas, stubborn rigidity, and ageless rituals."

Just a quick note to @Chrissyreadit saying thank you very much for this book - it's given me plenty to think about & I'm considering buying his Buddhist Boot Camp book as well.

4 ⭐ and 21 post it notes in the book!

Chrissyreadit Yay!!! I‘m so glad! I have Buddhist Boot Camp but have not read it yet. Also, I love that you take notes. I need to do that more often. 5y
jenniferw88 @Chrissyreadit to be fair, i only tend to take notes in non-fiction books. 5y
Chrissyreadit @jenniferw88 that‘s still great!!! I always think I will remember because I did a zillion years ago- but now I can‘t remember anything. 5y

#bfcr3 @Chrissyreadit thank you very much for the flask and book! I must admit I'm struggling this week as my Crohn's has flared up again, but the book is short so I'm going to try to fit it in this round! @wanderinglynn

Chrissyreadit Yay! Glad they arrived! I was curious about the cat flask it seemed cute. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit I agree I want to see what that thing looks like out of the box. 5y

Pickpick

This is another pick by Timber Hawkeye. Has he written more (this and Buddhist Boot Camp), because I‘d like to read more. I really like Timber, his writing style is very conversational and approachable. I love his approach to life. I really enjoyed this book for so many reasons, but I also really needed to hear some parts of this book in this moment.

I really wasn‘t that much a fan of puberty. I‘m sure hoping death and I get along much better. It seems that‘s just a bit more final.

Timber talking about this near death experience is actually amazingly amusing.

This is becoming a model for life right here. I think if we all took just a little time to understand where people are coming from, we could still disagree with their position without criticising it. This is something I hope I can do much more of.

Contemplating some major, exciting but terrifying, changes in my life. This made me feel much calmer in am I instant. In the end, the worst case scenario with the change is that I‘m in the same place in life, but I‘m a physical place I would rather be in. Worst case scenario with not making the change is that I‘m still in the same place in life I‘m a physical place I hate. It‘s not so scary, put that way.

GingerAntics @Mindyrecycles @gradcat in the last 24 hours, multiple things, including this book, have really helped solidify the right choice. Now, fingers crossed for everything to fall into place so this can happen. 5y

I need to keep this in mind. This definitely needs to come on board and become my new approach to life.

I like this. It‘s not that they didn‘t get excited about new information, it‘s that they are open minded enough to update their thinking when appropriate. Religion really can‘t do that without invalidating it.

Chrissyreadit I love Timber Hawkeye. 5y

This is pretty good advice. I quite like it. Our feelings come into everything, and nothing is unbiased.

This is another book with SO many good quotes. Some (many?) are even good for our current climate of “fake news” and “false facts”. It‘s hard to decide if I should post them all and spam everyone to death on the amazing quotes, or if I should just pick the best ones. Either way I am truly enjoying this read.

I quite like this opening quote. I‘m hoping this will be another peaceful read (like Buddhist Bootcamp and The Book of Joy) to hell bring a little balance to my real life at the moment.

Starting the tagged book by greatly enjoying the cover art. Apparently this is based off of a tattoo Timber has on his back. It looks like it would make a pretty awesome tattoo.

I found his matter of fact writing style and open nonjudgmental approach to life to be quite right for me. This book is deceptively simple and it's another reason I enjoyed it. Helped strengthen my on personal journey.

Speaking some very clear and direct truths. I think I'm going to like this book.

Bkwurm Great passage! One of the most useful lessons I ever learned was that we can't control events or other people, we can only control our own reactions to them. This passage reminds me of that lesson. 8y
SoniaC @Bkwurm I could not agree more. It is a life changing realization. That is exactly what he is expressing. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That about sums up my belief, I'll have to add this one and maybe some Buddhism to my reading next year. 📚 8y

SoniaC @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just started this one but his writing is very clear and direct. I have some amazing books in Buddhism if you'd like suggestions. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @SoniaC Sure! Recommendations from someone whose already read a few books is always welcome. 8y
SoniaC @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sorry for the delay. If you ask me anything by Thich Nhat Hanh is a good choice. I also really loved Rebel Buddha another favorite is Buddha's Daughters. Ethics for a new generation by HHDL is great. Last but not least Wherever You Go There You Are 8y
