Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2019 - It‘s a difficult time when we must think of legacies who are gone far too soon before their work is done. I thank MLK for saying “yes” to being chosen as a guiding light & envisioning what a committed people can do. However, as we know there were many voices so today I pulled out an ‘old familiar friend,‘ my falling apart edition of The Norton Anthology of Poetry so that I could read Margaret Walker‘s poem,👇🏽

Nute For My People. A poem that expresses that people must unite, search for truth, brandish courage and stand up and hope for a world “that will hold all the people, all the faces, all the adams and eves and their countless generations”....in peace, in harmony with love. 6y
Leftcoastzen Beautiful poem! 6y
Leftcoastzen Thanks for posting, it‘s been awhile since I had read it .So powerful. 6y
Nute @Leftcoastzen I agree! Powerful is a very good descriptive word for this poem. It moves me every time that I read it and the passing of time doesn‘t matter...it remains relevant which I guess is a sadness, the fact that people are still having to overcome injustices and unkindness. 6y

Thomas Hardy, "The Darkling Thrush"
These melancholy, listless days between Christmas and New Year!
I did actually hear a thrush singing in the garden this morning.

DivineDiana How lovely! I would not recognize the song of the thrush! 6y
MaGoose I love Hardy's poetry more than his novels. 💕👌☺ 6y
Lindy @DivineDiana The thrush I know best is the American robin. Its song is a sign of spring, when robins return to the Edmonton area. You can hear it online: https://youtu.be/WZl2X4zjejA (edited) 6y

DivineDiana Thank you, Lindy! It is a sign of Spring in the Northeast of the United States as well! I did not realize that a thrush and a robin are one and the same! #learningthroughlitsy 6y
quietlycuriouskate @Lindy @DivineDiana How lovely! That does sound a lot like the thrush I heard in the garden earlier. Your robins look to be the dressed-up cousins of our blackbirds, which I have always thought "hold" the spring/summer half of the year, while our robins hold the autumn/winter half. 6y
DivineDiana I need to do some bird research! 😉 🐦 ❤️ 6y

A Lyke-Wake (i.e corpse-watch) Dirge, from the 15th Century. If that doesn't count as a #crossing then I don't know what does!

Pickpick

Excellent anthology - you know how sometimes these things pick material that just doesn't go together or make sense bound up in the same text? This edition (the fifth) doesn't have that problem. I'm kind of sorry to be returning it, but my copy was only a rental textbook. (Might want my own someday, though).

Decided tonight I really need to organize my poetry collection and took them off the shelves. I think I'm going to go alphabetically by poet, and then do the anthologies with various poets separately. Wish me luck! BTW when we moved last year I did a big cull (not just poetry but all the books). I wonder if I'll cull some more here as I organize, but probably not many.

LeahBergen I love "playing with my books" ? 8y
brendanmleonard That's so much poetry! Awesome! 8y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen @brendanmleonard I am just now realizing this could take a while...I keep looking and reading inside them! I did find two copies of the same book (Nine Horses --Billy Collins), how did that happen?! 8y
LauraBrook Sounds like a good plan for organizing - I do something similar with my poetry section. And there always is at least one surprise double. It just happens! 😊 8y
ValerieAndBooks @LauraBrook yes it does happen sometimes and I just took the extra copy in and about 10 of these in for trade at the used bookstore today 😊👍 8y
