Meet Sarah Walters, a Camellia Society debutante with a weakness for bad ideas. Sarah's mother lectures her on etiquette but tends to get loose after a few gins. Still, Sarah tries to follow the debutante code - after all, in Charleston, manners mean everything. But it's not easy to follow the rules, particularly in the summers when she runs into boys in pickup trucks, or, later, when she moves to New York with her friends. For the Camellia girls soon learn, careers don't always go to plan and men don't always love you back: the bright future they thought was theirs dissolves into heartbreak, illness and addiction. And when a shocking event brings thirty-something Sarah back home to Charleston, she must decide where 'home' really is.

I so hate stories of stupid girls. Beautiful cover and blurb made me think this was going to be a delightful rebel daughter story. It wasn't. In fact parts of it were downright creepy. Main character was unlikable. Just a dumb privileged girl making stupid decisions over and over. By the end of the book she wasn't any better; but now she has a daughter of her own to screw up. 🤦‍♀️ #shouldhavebailed #stupidgirls #coverletdown

What I want to do? Sit here with a umbrella drink and a poolside read. What I'm gonna do? Host a pool party for my family. 🏖 #lastofsummer #idratherbereading #labordayweekend

$10.71 was the whopping total for these goodies at the Goodwill store. I would like to point out that I restrained myself. There were so many more calling to me....📣🎵🎤🎶

We read this for book group and everyone disliked it. One of the reasons was that the main character was totally unlikeable. I find if I don't like anyone in a book, I have a hard time liking the book as a whole. Anyone else? #aprilbookshowers #unlikeablecharacters

readinginthedark It depends on whether or not they still fascinate me, I guess. Although, even in books where I dislike the main characters, I usually want one or two side characters to love. 7y
TrishB Agreed! I just don't want to read if they are all horrible! 7y
TheKidUpstairs I find it depends on whether they are supposed to be likeable. If they clearly are dosed to be likeable, and I don't like them then I'm out. But if they're supposed to be unlikeable then I can deal. But yes, I usually need at least one character around who I find relatable. 7y

[DELETED] 853593837 Depends on what kind of dislikeable. If the character's backstory explains it then I can like a dislikeable character. If they're annoying for sake of being annoying then chances are I'll dislike the book too. I am however more likely to hate a book if I find I don't care or grow to care for the character. 7y
drokka I don't have to like any of the characters, provided that at least one of them has a redeemable quality. Something I can grab and hold close. 7y
Lindy Unlikeable characters can be very interesting. I'm always curious about the motivations of people who aren't like me, so as long as the characters are believable, I don't need to like them. 7y
Daisey I tend to have a hard time with a book if I don't like any of the characters. I have to have someone to root for in order to enjoy the time spent reading. However, I am getting a little bit better about finding other aspects of the book to appreciate even when I dislike most of the characters. 7y

I really disliked this book. In fact, my book group was unanimous in its dislike. I don't think we were the only ones. Look at that rating. But the quote was pretty good! 😁#BookLive17 #bestlineinabadbook

CocoReads I don't remember liking it either. 7y

Coming up in my #TBR pile. I got this on a huge library haul recently.

Em_Shotwell Just finished this book and honestly I don't know how I feel. It kind of had a "girls guide to hunting and fishing" feel to it---although it's been ten years since I read girls guide so I could be off. It was very well written. The author is obviously talented. I'm just unsure of my feelings for the story itself (which is my own subjective view- not a reflection on the actual writing). I need to process it. Review to come. ? 7y
