The Book of Hours
The Book of Hours | Rainer Maria Rilke
10 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 14 to read
As its title promises, the Book of Hours is a brilliant display of astonishing and ever-changing images of spiritual life. It is a quest for god, which begins in a monk's cell, takes us on a pilgrimage across the steppes of Russia and ends in the big city with its sleaze and despair. This fresh new translation by Stevie Krayer allows Rilke to speak directly and vividly to the reader of today.

batsy I'm reading Duino Elegies right now ❤️ Rilke is just...I have no words. 2y
vivastory @batsy @Nute He *might* be my favorite 20th century poet. He's an author I've returned to over & over again throughout my life. I always find something new in his work. 2y
batsy @vivastoryx @Nute I think he's going to become one of my ultimate faves, too. I'm doing this thing where I read a poem a week and just try to immerse myself in that poem—I started with Rilke's First Elegy and just wanted to continue with the rest. 2y

batsy @vivastory I find it hard to explain why Rilke moves me so much but this commentary at the end comes close to capturing it https://poetrysociety.org/features/readinginthedark/mark 2y
TheSpineView Not read this one yet! Stacked! 2y
Nute @TheSpineView I know that you will enjoy this!💕 2y
Nute @batsy @vivastory I have also been rendered speechless, without proper expression of thoughts after reading work that can only be heralded as exquisite, beautiful and soul capturing. Even his lighter poems are meditative and demand time of reflection. I like the idea of coming back to him knowing that something new awaits, Scott. I like the plan of just a little at a time to allow for an absolute immersive experience, Subashini. 2y
Nute @batsy I will plan for Duino Elegies next year. Reading the commentary now. Thank you! 2y
Kimzey ❤️ Rilke 2y
Kimbono My very favorite poem is You Who Never Arrived. “And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and,
startled, gave back my too-sudden image. “. SWOON ❤️

I discovered this poem from Rilke‘s Book of Hours this morning, through a podcast called “Interesting People Reading Poetry.” Krista Tippett read it and talked about its meaning to her—and all of it was exactly what I needed right now. 💜💜💜

*This translation is by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows

Crazeedi I love Krista's podcast!! 5y

“Many have painted her. But there was one Who drew his radiant colours from the sun. Mysteriously glowing through a background dim
When he was suffering she came to him, And all the heavy pain within his heart Rose in his hands and stole into his art.” 👇

LiterRohde “His canvas is the beautiful bright veil Through which her sorrow shines. There where the frail Texture o'er her sad lips is closely drawn A trembling smile softly begins to dawn - Though angels with seven candles light the place You cannot read the secret of her face.”

LiterRohde Went with the original German in order to get ‘hat‘ in today!

“Disguised since childhood, assembled from voices and fears and little pleasures. We come of age as masks. Our true face never speaks. Somewhere there must be storehouses where all these lives are laid away like suits of armor or old carriages or clothes hanging limply on the walls. Maybe all paths lead there, to the repository of unlived things.”

“I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it. I circle around God, around the primordial tower. I've been circling for thousands of years and I still don't know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song?”

teafetish Rilke (who to thanks to a childhood without any literary friends, I invariably pronounce as milk) is on my current reading shelf, with the Duino Elegies to be devoured this weekend... 5y

#Higher makes me think Rilke. I love this collection. I read it often, and I'm not particularly religious.

I have not read a great deal of poetry, but needed a selection to fulfill a book challenge category. So my daughter suggested her favorite book of poetry, Rilke's Book of Hours. And it was just lovely. #augustphotochallenge #poetry @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
