The Whispers of War
The Whispers of War | Julia Kelly
10 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
The start of World War II looms over three friends who struggle to remain loyal as one of them is threatened with internment by the British government, from the author of the sweeping, stirring (Kristin Harmel, internationally bestselling author of The Room on Rue Amlie) The Light Over London. In August of 1939, as Britain watches the headlines in fear of another devastating war with Germany, three childhood friends must choose between friendship or country. Erstwhile socialite Nora is determined to find her place in the Home Offices Air Raid Precautions Department, matchmaker Hazel tries to mask two closely guarded secrets with irrepressible optimism, and German expat Marie worries that she and her family might face imprisonment in an internment camp if war is declared. When Germany invades Poland and tensions on the home front rise, Marie is labeled an enemy alien, and the three friends find themselves fighting together to keep her free at any cost. Featuring Julia Kellys signature intricate, tender, and convincing (Publishers Weekly) prose, The Whispers of War is a moving and unforgettable tale of the power of friendship and womanhood in the midst of conflict.

#bookreport November3-9, 2024
Still reading the 4 non fiction books-I did not get to Burning Down the House this week-too much happening in our political lives here. Of the 3 books I finished, Dissolution ranked first-new to me series, then The Rising Tide- Ann Cleeves never disappoints! The Antique Hunters Guide to Murder was an interesting cozy, opening up a previously unknown world to me. #serieslove2024 #readyourkindle

Best of friends in the worst of times, three women are tested as England is threatened on the brink of WWII. Nora works for the Home Office, Hazel is a successful Matchmaker, and Marie of German descent works at the University. When Poland is invaded, England goes to war and thus begins the internment of enemy aliens. The bonds of friendship run deep and they will do anything to keep Marie from being interned even defying their country.

tpixie @sills I wish I could keep up with all the books you read! 4y

I've literally never read a book where Trent, Ontario was! I liked this. I loved all 3 main girls and the different aspects of society they came from and represented. We glorify countries who fought the Nazis and then totally ignore all the xenophobic and racist things we did. We talk a tiny bit about Japanese internment camps in Canada but I've literally never heard anyone mention what we did to people of German origins.

Have you ever just picked up a book on a lark and hope your gamble pays off? That‘s what I did with this book and the gamble paid off in SPADES! I was captivated by page one and binge read the story in a day. Full of heart and history, the characters will snare you from the get-go. You quite possibly need a box of Kleenex handy. At least I did.

Freespirit Sounds good👏🏼👏🏼 5y
KristiAhlers @Freespirit I‘m home in bed today with the stomach bug and this totally took my mind off how crummy I‘m feeling. I‘m going to pick up her title The Lights Over London next. 5y
Freespirit Oh dear hope you are better soon xxx 5y

It was good but lacked depth. I loved the strong female friendships.
