One for the Books | Joe Queenan
11 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
One of Americas leading humorists and author of the bestseller Closing Time examines his own obsession with books Joe Queenan became a voracious reader as a means of escape from a joyless childhood in a Philadelphia housing project. In the years since then he has dedicated himself to an assortment of idiosyncratic reading challenges: spending a year reading only short books, spending a year reading books he always suspected he would hate, spending a year reading books he picked with his eyes closed. In One for the Books, Queenan tries to come to terms with his own eccentric reading stylehow many more books will he have time to read in his lifetime? Why does he refuse to read books hailed by reviewers as astonishing? Why does he refuse to lend out books? Will he ever buy an e-book? Why does he habitually read thirty to forty books simultaneously? Why are there so many people to whom the above questions do not even matterand what do they read? Acerbically funny yet passionate and oddly affectionate, One for the Books is a reading experience that true book lovers will find unforgettable.

Another solid entry in the series. I love that this is a fairly well written cozy, I feel an affinity for the book recs dropped into the dialogue, and the library itself. A library cozy isn‘t all that rare but one in which the library, it‘s patrons and staff are believable? So rare. Thankful for a light and engaging read - I look forward to the next! Thanks to publisher and Netgalley for an advanced reader copy. all opinions are my own.

I seem to be stuck in this reading routine of: start & finish a book and I like it. Then start my next book and bail... then start my next book and bail... then start & finish a book and I like it.... then start my next book and bail.... UGH! I don‘t have high hopes for this book, but it‘s something 🤷🏼‍♀️

Crazeedi Been there... 4y

Bailedbailed

He says things like “encountering a lot of execrable women‘s fiction” or that costumed people at places like Colonial Williamsburg has “re-enactor‘s autism”. Bail!! I had thought this book about books would have been a good poolside read. I was wrong.

ValerieAndBooks And not good to read anywhere else, either. In fact I‘m thinking seriously about throwing it away. 4y
TheBookHippie Oh my. Thanks for letting us know! 4y

batsy Ugh. 4y
ValerieAndBooks @TheBookHippie @Paperback.Propensity @batsy the good thing about this was that it was only $1 from Dollar Tree. He said some things that I could relate to as a reader, but his snarkiness got to be too much!! (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie @ValerieAndBooks I don‘t do snarky well in a book. So I‘m glad you posted ! 4y

Great writers say things that are so beautiful, the very act of repeating them makes life itself beautiful

Joe Queenam's book snobbery made this hard to read. He is most interesting talking about books and what they mean to him, but the relentless negativity about everything (Kindles! Sci-fi! Mysteries! Bookstores! Libraries!) that characterizes his 'acerbic' brand of humor was annoying. The best section was the final chapter and epilogue, but Queenam manages to insult just about every kind of reader getting there.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Blah! I hate reading insult rants....🙄 7y
TiffReadsAndRuns @Riveted_Reader_Melissa there's some beautiful passages, but they just serve as spacers between long sections where he complains about things. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheBibliophilesNotes I've read some like that... but they always annoy me. The end result is no matter how great some parts, I end up not liking the book overall. (edited) 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I thought he was snobby too. But, I generally like Books about books. (edited) 7y

"Reading is the way mankind delays the inevitable. Reading is the way we shake our fist at the sky. As long as we have these epic, improbable reading projects arrayed before us; we cannot breathe our last: Tell the Angel of Death to come back later: I haven't quite finished 'Villette.'" #TiffanyReads

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Yes @Zelma! Have you read My Reading Life by Pat Conroy? That may be my favorite. 7y
Zelma @Joyfulmimi not yet. I heard that he has a lot of spoilers in it so I've been avoiding it for now. Is that true or should I not be worried? 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I do not recall there being spoilers in it. Lots of new surprising book recommendations @Zelma 7y
ValerieAndBooks Leah I was just thinking about the post where you tagged all your books about books in the comments because I can't find the list where I jotted down the ones that looked good to me🙈! Are you able to point me to that post somehow? If not I'll just determinedly scroll through until I find it 😆! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Never mind I found it! All I did was search #booksaboutbooks and viola! 😘

I love this book already.

"I know why I read so obsessively: I read because I want to be somewhere else. Yes, this is a reasonably satisfactory world that we are living in...but the world conjured up by books is a better one."

After finishing up "Dimestore" and "Mozart and Leadbelly" for yesterday's #readathon, I'm checking out "One for the Books." Thought my fellow Littens could appreciate this quote.

Half memoir, half rumination on reading. I re-read this every year as Joe Queenan is my favorite literary curmudgeon. I forgive him for hating on e-readers in return for quotes like this one. He spends a bit too much time talking about living in Paris as a young adult, but otherwise this is such a fun book about books, reading, and the love of all of it. Perfect for bibliophiles who want to see someone else geek out on reading.
