Paige, as the only hearing member of her family, grew up in the deaf community and now works as a BSL interpreter. A child of another deaf family was murdered in the night and she is called in to assist with interviews. I expected to be riveted but after the first couple chapters the story was slow. Worse, Paige was over emotional and unprofessional, constantly demanding the police tell her everything they knew then becoming angry & interfering ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ when they told her to do her job and mind her own business. The thing is, she repeatedly reminded herself that of course the police couldn't tell her everything then got angry every time they didn't answer her questions. The deaf community in her area is small so she knows many of them, including the family of the dead child, so I get her desire to understand but her sense of entitlement to the information was extremely annoying. 2y

Got this read through NetGalley. A toddler is murdered overnight in a house of deaf parents. A police sign language interpreter helps figure out who did it. A beautifully written take on a disability and a tragedy.

This could have been a great read had it not been for the insufferable main character. Unprofessional & a general pain in the proverbial. A pity as I have an ARC of the second book in the series to read. Hope the MC improves in that one 🤞 A disappointing 2⭐️

CoffeeK8 This one had such promise, but I completely agree with your review. I‘m interested to see what you think of the next one! 3y
OutsmartYourShelf @CoffeeK8 I‘m partway through another book atm, but Silent Night is up next 🙂 3y

A very different insight into the deaf community. A grim tale of tragedy.

A tragic murder of a toddler in the house of a deaf family necessitates the need for the police to hire a BSL interpreter. While the story itself was unique it became very repetitive around the halfway mark which is also around the time the main character became annoying. This was an interesting story, just not for me

I liked this book! It was a quick read. I thought I knew who the killer was and then I‘d change my mind. Pretty sure I thought everyone was the killer at some point, and I love a book that can make me feel that way! I was irritated by one of the cops, but it didn‘t ruin the book for me.

This reads like a bad Lifetime movie. The only thing I enjoyed about this book is the in depth description of the Deaf community. Other than that, this is a pass.

I believe it was @veritysalter that led me to finding this book on Netgalley. Im only at the start of Chapter Four and I am so into it. I can relate to the terror of these parents, not knowing someones in the house killing their kid. Double checking all the locks tonight? Yes, yes I am.

veritysalter I‘m glad your (sort of) enjoying it, and you have hopefully found a book that reads authentically. Happy reading ♥️📚 4y
jessinikkip Tha ks @veritysalter its worrying, but I definitely enjoy it. It does read very authentically to me and I like how it doesnt focus much on sounds at all. When 2 deaf characters are together, it doesnt mention sounds, Ive noticed. Makes it real 4y
monalyisha Just as an update...don‘t worry about not having received a package from me yet! It‘s no mail carrier nefariousness; I just haven‘t sent it yet. 🙈 As I‘m sure you know, things have been a bit cray. I‘ll get there soon! 4y

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ A unique approach to a crime thriller. A murder in your home, but you don't know, you can't hear them, you are deaf. We follow Paige the British Sign Language interpreter as she becomes ever increasing involved with the fractured family at the centre of this tragedy.

Nute Sounds so good! Stacking! 4y
jessinikkip Oh gosh! As someone who cant hear, I can imagine how scary it would be for someone you cant hear to be moving around while you sleep. Definitely stacking 4y
veritysalter @jessinikkip The author has partial hearing, I‘m no expert, but I felt she described things, interactions between the deaf characters together and the deaf and hearing characters really well. She described the nuances of signing as one would of speech. The characters are not in any way victimised (except as actual victims of a crime). 4y

jessinikkip Lovely, I will see about getting a copy! I love to see deaf characters well done. :) 4y
