I might not remember all the details from this book in a few months, but what I will remember is the bond between Bess Kalb and her grandmother and how it made me thankful for all the wonderful memories I have with mine. 💚

A short read about family that touched my heart, made me laugh, but most of all made me appreciate things, and people, in my life I sometimes take for granted.

This was good in a way that it‘s always interesting to hear abt how other families interact, how their bonds form and how they sort things out. It has a great historical component too, giving a first (second? Third?) hand account of immigration into the USA. other than a coupla cool bits however, I can‘t say it was terribly memorable for me, at this point.

A short, sweet love letter from a granddaughter to her grandmother; for the most part I loved this, it was laugh out loud funny at times, heartbreaking at others. The background family dynamics really bothered me; although I appreciated the author‘s end note in which she reminds us that this is just the story through her eyes and others will have other versions.

This was a sit-on-my-couch-and-don‘t-get-up-until-you‘re-done-reading read. A delightful family history, with Kalb‘s grandmother being the central figure. Snippets from emails, voicemails, and photos are included. May my grandchildren love me as much as this author loves her grandmother. May I be as available, as lovingly opinionated, and as supportive to my grandchildren as her grandmother was to her. I needed this book.

❤️ “When the earth is cracking behind your feet and it feels like the whole world is going to swallow you up, you put one foot in front of the other and you keep going. You go forward.”

I was laughing a little, crying a little, and feeling a whole lot of love throughout these generations.
What a beautiful relationship between this grandmother and granddaughter!

I enjoyed this book. A tribute to the relationship of a Granddaughter & Grandmother. One thing that really stood out to me was how she wanted her to place value in herself and other women. A couple of the quotes I liked: “ When the earth is cracking behind your feet, you go forward. One foot in front of the other” “If you are having a rotten day, go buy yourself an ice cream soda and a new hat”. Enjoyable and fast read.

Loved it! Brought me to tears 😭
Bess has a close relationship with her grandmother, Bobby, a cosmopolitan woman of means. It's clear how highly Bess regards her grandmother, but they did have some issues with boundaries. This seemed to be a generational conflict: Bess's weight.
Makes me so grateful to be one of the lucky granddaughters to have a fabulous grandmother myself. ♥️ #nonfiction #memoir

Probably was not the right time for me to read this. Or maybe it was. So soon after my Mom‘s death (who was my grandmother and raised me). And on Mother‘s Day now. But I enjoyed the book. And it‘s bittersweet sadness.

And when he laughed his whole face turned into a great, big smile and I could feel my heart in my throat over the sight of him. I knew I‘d do anything for that smile-the way his eyes disappeared, swallowed by his cheeks, and his shoulders shook and his breath caught in his chest. If I could see one thing for the rest of eternity, it would be your grandfather laughing. 😭😭😭 love this book so far!!!

The author writes about her grandmother, her unique life, and their lives together—about their friendship, while it wasn‘t perfect, it was very strong, beautiful, and even rare. She writes from the perspective of her dead grandmother and it‘s honestly brilliant. Definitely recommend!

*Goes to call grandmother*

A lovely memoir about the relationship between Bess Kalb & her Grandma Bobby. Masterfully written in the voice of Grandma Bobby who has died, the book runs the range of emotions- laughter, tears, love. Their loving relationship is revealed through oral narratives, emails, phone calls, and photos. You can‘t help laughing at the Jewish grandmother telling her granddaughter how to live her life and the granddaughter‘s respectful responses.

What a gem of a book, a matrilineal memoir written on the voice of her grandmother after her death. A touching family history filled with stories that made me laugh and cry. A perfect pandemic read to bring some perspective and joy to this scary time. I didn't start it for #ATY2020, but it fits the next prompt: a collaboration between two or more people ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ @barbarabb

BarbaraBB Good choice! For me this was the hardest prompt so far! 5y

What a treasure. A sublime yet down-to-earth story “narrated“ by the author's late grandmother. Grandma Bobbie, who had Russian Jewish immigrant parents, pulls no punches in advising “her angel“ granddaughter about everything, from men to money to cosmetics. Very nearly a perfect book. My sides hurt from laughing and I'm only halfway through. I envy the author having known and loved her absolute scream of a Jewish grandma. Bess is told her dress makes her look like “a secretary from Yonkers.“ Also, cross-country skiing isn't skiing, it's shuffling, and makes you easy prey for grizzly bears who could stop hibernating at any moment and eat you. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sure to be a smash; release March 17, 2020.
