Witch & Wizard
Witch & Wizard | James Patterson, Gabrielle Charbonnet
The world is changing: the government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now, kids are disappearing. For 15-year-old Wisty and her older brother Whit, life turns upside down when they are torn from their parents one night and slammed into a secret prison for no reason they can comprehend. The New Order, as it is known, is clearly trying to suppress Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Being a Normal Teenager. But while trapped in this totalitarian nightmare, Wisty and Whit discover they have incredible powers they'd never dreamed of. Can this newly minted witch and wizard master their skills in time to save themselves, their parents--and maybe the world?

I was not fond of this book. Too childish for me. For smart kids they didn't act like it. It was part of my #Scarathlon2022 TBR list @StayCurious #TeamMonsterMash. This one gave me 250 word for the #wordsearch for #Scarathlon2022.Also there were some witches #witchathon @mdm139 and it was a little spooky #spookoween2022 @TheSpineView

Starting reading this with a student I‘m tutoring. The beginning sounds a lot like The Nazi invasion of Poland, in this book so far they are round up accused witches instead of Jewish people. Their decrees are like the Nuremberg laws.

Roary47 This was a fun series. Enjoy! 😊 3y

When you‘re making sure all books have a genre label and you happen upon the section that contains your not-so-favorite author and his not-so-great series (in your opinion), you take a deep breath and remind yourself that they are still books and you love books and you will take care of them anyway. 😬😪

ravenlee I‘ve never read Patterson, but what I know of him from his idiotic tv commercials makes me loathe him. 5y
LibrarianRyan Every once in a while he makes some great. But most of the time it‘s status quo 5y
TheBookAddict @ravenlee I liked his earlier books, Along Came A Spider stands out to me when I think of something good by him. I don‘t know what I‘d think of it if I read it now. Yes, his commercials are ridiculous. I liked the idea, but I didn‘t like the execution when it came to this series. It was torture reading the books. I wanted to know what happened to the characters, but I was in the middle of book 3 when I gave up, since it was going nowhere. 😔 5y
See All 7 Comments
TheBookAddict @ravenlee he was also throwing jabs and insinuating that his books were better than others, within this series. In particular the HP series among others. 5y
TheBookAddict @LibrarianRyan right, it‘s quite disappointing. It seems to me like he shoots for quantity not quality. I haven‘t read all of his books, but from the ones I‘ve read, I would say that his earlier books were better. 5y
ravenlee Once he started churning out multiple books per year, with “co-authors” in very small print, I figured he was pretty much done. Makes me wonder if his “collaboration” consists of throwing out a title and maybe a scenario, then leaving the other writer with all the work. 5y
TheBookAddict @ravenlee right, especially since he does have those courses he charges for and the perk is that at the end you get to coauthor a book with him. 🤦🏽‍♀️ and he boasts so much about how many books he writes in a year, even though he doesn‘t write them by himself. 5y

This was a fast fun book! Patterson never disappoints me! On to book 2!

Aphina Could you give me more info on this book? I've seen it a few times and thought about picking it up but I've been finding James Patterson books really forumulaic over the past few years. 6y
SmartBookaholicsIncBookstore The government has seized control of every aspect of society! a story of Wisty and Whit Allgood, a sister and brother who were torn from their family in the middle of the night, slammed into prison, and accused of being a witch and a wizard. Their fate is unknown, and the worst is feared-for the ruling regime will stop at nothing to suppress life and liberty, music and books, art and magic . . . and the pursuit of being a normal teenager. 6y
SmartBookaholicsIncBookstore This whole series Patterson co wrote with another author! I Thought that was amazing 6y
Aphina Thanks! @SmartBookaholicsIncBookstore I will give it a try x 6y

#2018Book103
This book was a quick, fun read. However, because it was so quick, Patterson didn't take enough time to really build the world around these characters. And, even though the chapters switched between a brother and sister, it was almost impossible to tell which sibling was narrating without checking the name at the beginning of the chapter. Male and female characters should be easy to tell apart, not just basically the same character.

DivineDiana Agree. Do like the cover! 🧡📚🎃 6y

I liked the premise, but the juvenile writing really hurt this one in my opinion. James Patterson should not write YA fiction if he thinks dumbing it down will make it appeal more to teens. It was a quick read, so I read it all in a day. I can‘t decide if I want to continue with the series or not, so I think I‘ll let the next book help me decide.

Witch and Wizard is interesting so far! Fast-paced, although the dialogue is a bit stiff.

This book received strong reviews, so I thought, what the heck!
I should have gone with my gut. As a humble, unpublished reader, I'm pretty reticent about making bad reviews, but this book! The plot was lame, the characters were vapid, and the writing? 💩
Patterson is the worst kind of young adult author. Someone should tell him that kids are people too!

Overdrive is being a jerk!!

My library account (top) says W&W is good for another 14 days.

My Overdrive app (bottom) says expired.

I've deleted the book as well as the app and still expired. This is way too work for a super annoying book to finish reading to my son.

(The main annoyance is the stupidly short chapters, not really the storyline).

The heck with it! Time to move on to Sigler…

carys14 I am sure this is all related to the library giving me a brand new number when I replaced my card last week. First my lost holds, now a perpetually expired book. 8y
BookishFeminist 🔪🔪 ugh that would drive me nuts! I hate when libraries change their card or system and don't integrate properly. 8y
carys14 @BookishFeminist To be fair, I lost my physical card ages ago and had it replaced last week not realizing they were going to give me a new number. However on the flip side, I mentioned how we use our acct a lot for ebooks and the librarian did not tell me that I was getting a new acct and how it could mess up my overdrive holds and checkouts. 8y

I'm honestly not enjoying this series much. It seems like Patterson is a bit full of himself at this point and has an "anything goes since I'm a famous author" kind of attitude, or it might just be that he doesn't try as hard when it's a coauthored book. The concept is great, but not conveyed well.
