Happier at Home
Happier at Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon a Project, Read Samuel Johnson, and My Other Experiments in the Practice of Everyday Life | Gretchen Rubin
Tolstoy wrote, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." This is the statement that inspired bestselling author Gretchen Rubin to wonder whether she could foster an even greater happiness in her home. During The Happiness Project, the same questions kept tugging at her. How can I raise happy children? How can I maintain a tender, romantic relationship with my spouse--after fifteen years of marriage? How do I keep my Blackberry from taking over my private life? How can I foster a well-ordered, light-hearted atmosphere in my house, when no one else will lift a finger to cooperate? This book is Gretchen's account of her second journey in pursuit of happiness. Prescriptive, easy-to-follow, and anecdotal, Happier at Home offers readers a way of thinking and being that is positive and life-affirming. With specific examples following the calendar year, an intimate voice, and drawing from science and pop culture, this book will resonate with anyone looking to strengthen the bonds of family.

Everyday life is a fascinating subject if you really think about all the moments and events that have led you to your current moment. How can we be happiest in our current moment? Turns out, each one of us must answer that question in our own way. If we want a happy, humorous home, we must become happy and joyous (which sometimes requires working at it!). Some great points about looking for the positive instead of reinforcing negative thoughts.

Mehso-so

This started out strong, but quickly began to feel too repetitious and similar to The Happiness Project, which I read a few years ago. Her flippant dismissal of other people‘s opinions comes on strong in this one, and while it is important to be authentic and true to yourself, in this book the tone was off-putting in parts.

Also, just realized her father was Secretary of the Treasury under Clinton. So that‘s cool.

shortsarahrose This reminds me of a chronic illness blogger I used to follow who had this saying - “AWAP” or “as well as possible.” Things might not be good, but you can try to be as well as possible given your situation. Usually that‘s enough. 5y

Hoping for some more ideas and positive outlook in the tagged book as we struggle with cabin fever this week. ☺️

Gretchen Rubin liked my Instagram Post about her book! 🎉😁

runswithscissors007 Eep! I just had a similar experience on insta! V. Exciting. Who are you on insta? Would love to read the review! 5y
PurpleTulipGirl I replied to an Instagram post from my local book shop, saying I was looking forward to the new Chris Bohjalian book, and he (or his people, I‘d guess) thanked me. Even if it was his people, it‘s still neat that they‘re paying attention like that. 5y
alisiakae @runswithscissors007 I‘m alisiabergsman on insta. The post was very similar to the one I posted here this morning 😄 5y

#Day4 of books that changed my life. I love her podcast, too.

juliannebenford I love her podcast too - is this very family centred? I don't have kids and wondered if it's still a worthwhile read. 6y
Laura317 @juliannebenford I didn‘t consider it so - it is pretty much like her podcast. 6y

Gretchen Rubin studies happiness and works to make her life happier. I love listening to her podcast with her sister and always get a little tidbit to try. (I actually liked her first book much better than the tagged one - but can‘t find my copy). #ifeelfine #heyjune

MelissaSue81 I liked her first book a lot too, I started this one but bailed I think. 6y
Itchyfeetreader I did not know she had a podcast I loved he first book 6y

Blaire @Itchyfeetreader yes, it‘s a weekly podcast with her sister. And her sister has one that is also really fun called happier in Hollywood that she hosts with her colleague Sarah fain. 6y
Blaire @Morr_Books I haven‘t read four tendencies yet - but I am an upholder and find the framework useful. I also love happier in Hollywood ( probably even more than happier). 6y
Blaire @MelissaSue81 I‘ve read a few chapters of this one but have never finished. The first one felt more generally applicable. This is one feels more specific to a lifestyle I don‘t have. 6y

@Lmstraubie , I need to get Gretchen's newest book to read and then join these two on the Shelf to read and then join these two on the Shelf 😊

Lmstraubie Her newest is this one that came out of her work on Better than Before. I listen to her podcast. It's not earth shattering, but just a good weekly dose of positivity. 7y

I think I could have bypassed this book, having read and enjoyed "The Happiness Project". She repeatedly referred to the first book and much of the stuff she recommends seems to be what typical, loving families do. There are some new tips and strategies and I continue to like her and her perspective. Its better than a So-So but for me:⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book just as much as The Happiness Project. It's similar to the first book in many ways, but with new ideas to try to incorporate more happiness into your home and life.

This was good! A lot of review from The Happiness Project, but I loved that book and didn't mind. Recommended if you're a Gretchen fan or a fan of "experiential" nonfiction. #nonfiction #gretchenrubin #happierathome #thehappinessproject

I borrowed this one off overdrive from my library. It was due back yesterday so I turned my phone on airplane mode to make sure it wasn't sent back before I was done reading it lol. I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed her first one. I don't live in New York or work from home but I still identify with Ms. Rubin and I find her tips useful. It's so easy to be distracted by busyness that I forget the big picture sometimes.

Seems like a good one to be rereading post you kippur. Some of my favorite advice from Gretchen and about organization generally is get rid of stuff first. Clean homes have less stuff. I am working toward this. Slowly. Marie Kondo, Gretchen Rubin, etc...I am listening and implementing. #newyearresolution

This book really had me rethink how to live my home life. The thought that I can only change myself and not others isn't new, but Gretchen seems to put it in a light that seems attainable. To celebrate happiness, I share a picture of the two whom make me happy to be their mama.
