All the Sad Young Men | F Scott Fitzgerald

All the Sad Young Men by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A Collection of Short Stories. All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication-and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received-the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised - by people whose recognition counts - is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby, ' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times-people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me." The Rich Boy - Winter Dreams - The Baby Party - Absolution - Rags Martin-Jones and the Pr-nce of W-les - "The Sensible Thing" - Gretchen's Forty Winks.

#bookplates So the story on Jimmy Starr , he wrote screenplays and was a columnist in Hollywood, when Valentino died ,Jimmy acquires his bookplate & adds his name to it.I bought this book from an antiquarian bookseller when I was in high school.I got the other book at a library sale .Looked up the modest house in Burlingame which had sold for huge money fairly recently as Bay Area California real estate often does.😂 @LeahBergen

KVanRead We used to live one town over from Burlingame and spent a lot of time there. We loved the park right near that street when the kids were small. And yes the houses all cost oodles now 😔 (edited) 4y
LeahBergen Wow! These are fascinating. 👏🏻👏🏻 4y
ValerieAndBooks I‘ve done that too — look up addresses, not just names in books 😂 4y
Lcsmcat I love finding bookplates in books I buy secondhand. That‘s a great story about Valentino, but the plate on the left is adorable. 4y
Leftcoastzen @Lcsmcat Isn‘t it sweet! I love that bookplates add to the history of the secondhand book. There were some great designs! 4y

Mehso-so

Interesting little experiments on the Gatsby themes and interesting how these shape that classic. Though overall I find Fitzgerald's short stories repetitive, with a couple of exceptions--Benjamin Button, Diamond as Big As the Ritz.
