This is Sanford‘s first entry in the Virgil Flowers series—he‘s a detective for the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Published in 2007, it‘s a backlist choice.

Flowers gets called to the small town of Bluestem to investigate a house fire with its owner trapped inside. Bluestem is a town where everybody knows everything about their neighbors. Or do they?

Started this one yesterday. Works for the #nightoriented #booked2019 prompt, but so far I don‘t love it. Virgil doesn‘t work for me quite the way Sanford‘s Lucas Davenport does. But I‘ll give it a few more hours. #audiobook #maledectectivesarecrude

alisiakae Male detectives ARE crude! And it‘s a reason why I stay away from a lot of detective series written by male authors. 6y

This book really picked up towards the end. I will probably read the second Virgil Flowers book.

#booknlunch I have been in a funk lately. Last week was lousy at work and this week is no better. I haven‘t been able to do much reading. Just trying to keep up on schoolwork. Overtime, awful customers, lack of sleep, and ten hour shifts are killing me. I had to see a nutritionist because I am having problems being able to eat, for the past few months. On the plus side I have three weeks left of my semester! I am sorry for the complaining.

wanderinglynn Hope things get better for you! Hang in there! 🌈 7y

I think I‘ll always love Lucas more, but Virgil‘s good too. I won‘t say much as this book is for #teaandtomes but I enjoyed it and I hope the rest of my group does too. #teabirds #25inFive

MuddyPuddle I have SUCH a crush on Virgil Flowers! 7y
CocoReads @MuddyPuddle he‘s right up there on the Book boyfriend list but I gave my heart to Lucas such a long time ago. But I love Virgil‘s taste in T-shirt‘s. 7y
Andrew65 I love a good John Sandford book. 😊 7y

CocoReads @Andrew65 this was my first Virgil book but I‘ve been a long time fan of the Prey books! 7y
Andrew65 @CocoReads I‘m still working through the Prey books, not always easily available at the library. 7y
CocoReads @Andrew65, I‘m doing a reread/catch-up on them myself but I‘ve broken down and have been buying them since I think it‘s the 3rd time I‘ve done this. 7y
Readergrrl I am completely unfamiliar with this author/series. Methinks I sense a new addiction!!! 😃 7y
CocoReads @Readergrrl and it‘s a spin-off series at that but totally stands on its own. Sandford is great 7y

Just getting some #25inFive reading in while I put cds in iTunes. Get them there before I take them out to the Jeep because the joke is once the music goes in moms car, it never comes back. It‘s mostly true, although I do try to do a purge a couple times a year and swap things out. I‘d been CD player-less for about a year though, got a new one and then lost my ride for a couple months after the hubs wrecked his.

It‘s been a long morning topped by lunch at our favorite local Mexican chain. I definitely I felt need to walk after that but first I‘m going to read before my traditional Sunday afternoon nap. Then, once I‘ve digested—take a walk. It‘s chilly but the sun is shining so I‘ll take it!

Step one to enjoying my weekend. #bathnbook and probably an early bedtime. I did commit to helping with an egg hunt tomorrow so I have to be at the church at the butt crack of dawn to hide eggs. But I have a mall date with the hubs in the evening. So rare that we want to go there. Him especially. I usually never make it past flat top or the bookstore but he needs vans and I need interview clothes so I can change my world

Adulting was mostly a fail today. I‘m feeling pretty grouchy and unsettled but I‘m trying to get lost in this one from my tbr for this weekends #mttbrreadathon It is good. I just can‘t get my brain to settle down.

Louise I hope you feel better soon. 💕 7y
CocoReads @Louise thank you. It‘s mostly stress. I‘m trying to let it go for now. As well as take steps to change the situation. 7y

Perfect making dinner combo. Guns n Roses and Virgil Flowers. Not that I necessarily think Birgil is a GNR fan, but it‘s what was on Spotify and I‘ve always liked Welcome to the Jungle.

#minibookhaul from B&N, I read Milk & Honey last year from the library but both of Kaur‘s books were 20% off so I couldn‘t resist. And also the first Virgil Flowers book because when I get caught up on the Davenport books, Virgil‘s next.

Mehso-so

This was a very fine, standard, nothing outrageously special mass market mystery. Virgil Flowers is a fun character and John Sandford is a good writer but I am in no rush to read any more books from this series. Good choice for a plane or vacation read.
