Welcome to the Pine Away Motel and Cabins
Welcome to the Pine Away Motel and Cabins: A Novel | Katarina Bivald
11 posts | 8 read | 8 to read
"Katarina Bivald talks about her characters like you talk about your best friends. She gives her story absolutely everything she has."FREDRIK BACKMAN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove From New York Times bestselling author of The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend comes a charming tale of a ramshackle roadside motel: a heartwarming story of love, friendship, community, and the art of living, even when it's already too late. The Pine Creek Motel has seen better days. Henny would call it charming, but she's always seen the best in things. Like now, when she's just met an untimely end crossing the road. She's not going to let a tiny thing like death stop her from living fullynot when her friends and family need her the most. After the funeral is over, her body is buried, and the last casserole dish is empty, Henny is still around. She's not sure why, but she realizes she has one last opportunity to help her friends discover the happiness they once knew before they lose the motel and cabins they've cherished for years. "Hopeful, heartening, and humane, this is the novel I needed to read right now."J. Ryan Stradal, author of The Lager Queen of Minnesota and Kitchens of the Great Midwest "Remarkable...unquestionably a page-turner and full of wisdom. A brave, unusual book, which powerfully portrays friendship and love." Felicity Hayes-McCoy, author of The Library at the Edge of the World

Themes: Found Family, Small Towns, Ghosts

Full disclosure, I picked up my copy at a Dollar Tree for $1.25. I figured for that price, even if I didn‘t love it I wouldn‘t be out much. Especially since her first work (“The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend”) was one I immediately donated after I finished it 🫤 Well dear readers, spoiler alert… I loved this book ☺️ You cannot help but root for Henny and her friends. I would definitely recommend 🤘

Suet624 good to know!

My funeral begins in an hour.
I‘m pretty sure I‘m going to miss it. Right now I‘m sitting on the motel rooftop, looking down on an almost-empty parking lot.

This was an okay read. This was one of three books my mom gave me last Christmas. Nothing about it really stuck out to me. It really didn‘t have the excitement I was look for. Overall it was just an okay read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Deblovestoread I told my husband “this person gets me” and read him the quote. He looks at me and says “that makes no sense” he‘s obviously not a reader. 😂 3y

Henny is a ghost and is determined to make sure all of her friends have found happiness before she leaves. The story centers around a small town, with a very religious and intolerant community and a motel near town that becomes a refuge of sorts for the town outcasts. I teared up, I laughed, I smiled.
My only criticism is that it lost me a bit in the middle which I think could have been solved with a little editing. It got long-winded.
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yesterday‘s book haul. I had Costco shopping to do so I had to stop at Starbucks for a coffee first. I can‘t help it if the Starbucks is in a book store! Then I found two books once I finally got to Costco.

After a trip to the library and book mail ... there's that pause where you balance on the edge until you pick what to read next.
It's great to have choices ... life is good. 😊
