Farewell My Ovaries | Wendy Harmer
post image

September is Ovarian Awareness Month, and this is my plea to every woman to make herself aware of the symptoms. Ovarian cancer is called the silent killer because the early symptoms are so subtle they can be attributed to other common issues. Because of that, women often go undiagnosed until it has advanced to a point that prognosis is grim. There is no lump to find, no screener to routinely give, no clear way to diagnose except surgery. ⬇️

staci.reads In the summer of 2023 I started feeling bad. I had major digestive issues, intense night sweats, pelvic pain, fatigue, and irregular and sometimes heavy bleeding. I told myself it was probably perimenopause; after all, I was a 51 year old woman.
Then in August, the digestive problems got worse, and the pain became more persistent. Finally, I got concerned enough to make an appointment. I met with my family doctor, who I hadn't seen in years. ⬇️
5d
staci.reads I explained my symptoms and said "You're probably just going to tell me it's perimenopause."

He said "maybe...but maybe not." Then after asking a lot of questions and ordering blood tests (which ultimately would show nothing), he made me promise that as soon as I left I would make an appointment with my obgyn because - in his words - "gynecological problems can often mask themselves as gastro issues."

That statement may have saved my life. ⬇️
5d
staci.reads I kept my promise & made the appointment.
By the time I saw my obgyn, my symptoms included loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss. Luckily, my obgyn recognized the red flags, and she ordered the right tests. We found out I had a 13 centimeter tumor on my right ovary and a CA 125 of over 700. Now, we were off to the races. Countless tests, procedures, and appointments later, I was having major surgery and hearing the words "it's cancer." ⬇️

staci.reads But it could have been much worse. My early symptoms were challenging, but not debilitating. I could have rationalized them longer and continued to put off going to the doctor. I could have had doctors who moved slowly, didn't recognize the symptoms, or chalked my issues up to an aging reproductive system.

I could have given the cancer time to spread.

staci.reads Before the summer of 2023, I knew nothing about ovarian cancer - but luckily my doctors did. But survival shouldn't be about luck. Information is power. Listening to your body is key. I will continue to broadcast the symptoms.
I will continue to share my story in the hope someone listens and gets checked in time. I will pray for the day researchers develop a screener and this disease becomes less deadly. #MakeTheAppointment #KnowTheSymptoms

nanuska_153 Oh wow, thank you so much for sharing this! I had no idea that gyno problems masked themselves as gastro, that's such good information to have. You are very lucky you got such good doctors, never let them go! 3d
Chrissyreadit This is crazy- because…. i do need further testing/biopsy. My only symptom was spotting- that i thought was due to hormone therapy. I barely thought to mention it- my pcp asked about gyno and i told her i could not get in until next april so she ordered the tests- and they came back abnormal…. otherwise i would be waiting until spring and may not have insurance after december- im glad you are posting this info. i had no idea. 2d
staci.reads @Chrissyreadit I'm sorry you're going through this. The unknown truly is the hardest part. I hope your doctors are able to work through the process quickly and get you some answers. 😔 20h

A collection of humorous comic strips following two (and then more) friends in their messy lives and queer experiences. The characters are heartfelt, and I enjoyed seeing their relationships grow. This style of comic never really resonates with me, so I can't speak to whether it will resonate with readers. #LGBTQIA #Humor #Comics

I received two Kickstarter rewards today! David J. Walker's new book The Death of Bobby Hart (which was also an excuse to get the Bitter Root omnibus), and Nathan W. Pyle's new Strange Planet book and his 50 states book where he creates shapes/characters for each state 😜

If I had started this on a weekend and weren't also reading a Bob Woodward book about trump I probably would have finished this in two days. I love the author's humor, and as it turned out this was a great palate cleanser to read in the evening after reading a few chapters of the Woodward book each day.

Nonsense Novels | Stephen Leacock

Mehso-so

Not quite the thoughtless diversion I first took it for, which actually makes sense, because the sharply satirical Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town is the whole reason I picked up another work by Stephen Leacock.
I'll admit some of these entries - it's a collection of ten short stories - read a little goofier than others, but once you realize it's as much a commentary on different types of classic stories as it is a collection of individual 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? silly narratives, it's a bit more intriguing to pick out how Leacock is sending up the various genres: detective story, ghost story, chivalric romance, dramatic but not tragic gothic romance or is it?, country bumpkin corrupted in the big city, a series of diary entries pining over a forbidding love, a Scottish romance leaning a bit more tragic, a sailor tale, a Christmas tale - maybe poking a bit at Dickens?, and early sci-fi/time travel/ 2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? social commentary.
These are genre send-ups, so the form is fooled with to the extent that most stories are actually a dark comedy of errors, many people are obviously made fools of by conmen or shown to be fools by their own actions, naming schemes are often ridiculous (which I fear wanders past stereotypical into xenophobic/racist when the tales have a clear cultural origin 😬),
2w
Robotswithpersonality 4/? and women come off looking slightly worse than men overall. The sci-fi story in particular, as sci-fi often does, comments clearly on the values of the time it was written in, and so you get a side order of hurray capitalism/puritanical work ethic, with a sprinkle of women are silly, whether because of how they choose to enjoy fashion or because they campaign for votes and equal rights and that means they want to be 'like men'. 😮‍💨 2w
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 For the record, the casual mention of suicide and mistreatment of children seems to be inserted more carelessly into the text than it would be these days, so be warned.
I don't actually think this book offers enough to the modern reader that you need to seek it out, but it hasn't completely put me off checking out Leacock's other works either.

⚠️mention of suicide, cannibalism, child abandonment, infanticide, misogyny

My new (old?) definition of a comfort read: a book which “may bring some passing amusement...or some brief respite when the sadness of the heart or the sufferings of the body forbid the perusal of worthier things.“
