Kayak Morning
Kayak Morning: Reflections on Love, Grief, and Small Boats | Roger Rosenblatt
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
From Roger Rosenblatt, author of the bestsellers Making Toast and Unless It Moves the Human Heart, comes a moving meditation on the passages of grief, the solace of solitude, and the redemptive power of love In Making Toast, Roger Rosenblatt shared the story of his family in the days and months after the death of his thirty-eight-year-old daughter, Amy. Now, in Kayak Morning, he offers a personal meditation on grief itself. Everybody grieves, he writes. From that terse, melancholy observation emerges a work of art that addresses the universal experience of loss. On a quiet Sunday morning, two and a half years after Amys death, Roger heads out in his kayak. He observes,You cant always make your way in the world by moving up. Or down, for that matter. Boats move laterally on water, which levels everything. It is one of the two great levelers. Part elegy, part quest, Kayak Morning explores Rogers years as a journalist, the comforts of literature, and the value of solitude, poignantly reminding us that grief is not apart from life but encompasses it. In recalling to us what we have lost, grief by necessity resurrects what we have had.

When I'm not on Litsy...

What do you guys like to do when you're not talking about books? 📚#littensoffline

Dolly Spin wool, knit, play with cat, care for elder, housework 7y
ReadingSusan Photography. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto I love to go to the gym, take my pup for adventures, and I have a serious love of backgammon and Netflix. 🤷🏻‍♀️😍 PS I will love to see the responses to this post. I enjoy the nonbookish parts of other Littens lives. Thank you! 7y

the-flashley @Dolly @ReadingSusan @Ashley_Nicoletto I'm loving the responses already! We see everyone's tastes in reading, but it's cool to see what else everyone likes to do! 7y
britt_brooke Lately, we've been taking our 3 and 5 year olds hiking. The last 2 weekends, they've done a couple of 3-mile trails with us. They're troopers! Can't wait until they're big enough to go kayaking. We live near some great spots for it! 7y
the-flashley @britt_brooke wow that's impressive! And I love kayaking. It can be so peaceful and it's definitely a unique experience. 😊 7y
LauraBeth Kayaking looks like fun 😀Reading is my main thing but I also like to run and go to the gym. Similar to @Ashley_Nicoletto, I like to go on outdoor adventures with my dog. I love putting puzzles together and playing board games. 7y
mcipher Kayaking is one of my favorite things, but I don't get to go nearly often enough. I need to buy a kayak and a rack so I don't have to always borrow other people's. 👍 7y
britt_brooke @The-Flashley Many years ago, we had some flat water kayaks but sold them after moving a couple of times and not living near good kayaking spots. I regret it now - we live less than a mile from a gorgeous lake! So peaceful and a great workout, too. 7y
TongueTiedSLP11 I like to run, and I did my first triathlon this year. I'd love to do kayaking some time! I got to go paddleboarding in North Carolina this summer, but I didn't get to try kayaking. I'm also trying to learn more about hiking. 😀😀 7y
Hoopiefoot I run and cycle and kayak and ramble around 😀 7y
Jennifer3 Hike, play with my dogs, watch TV or movies and swim!!! I swam in age group, high school and college, continue to swim throughout my life as it is a great way for me to find peace. 7y
the-flashley @mcipher @britt_brooke I've loved it since I was in middle school and went to a summer kayaking camp. I'd never had my own kayak until this summer when I got a couple of them for my birthday. It definitely is wonderful to be able to go whenever I want! @TongueTiedSLP11 I live in North Carolina! There are definitely a lot of pretty places throughout the state. 7y
DebbieGrillo I love to walk, cycle, practice yoga, bake. Also I teach. 7y
mrozzz I shoot a lot of pool 🎱 7y
Kaylamburson I enjoy different workout classes, but especially aerial arts like Lyra, pole fitness, and trapeze. I've just rediscovered logic puzzles, and I do lots of babysitting in the evenings after work! 7y
RebL I work for a local nonprofit that gives shoes, eyeglasses, hearing aids, participation scholarships, and college scholarships to students and classroom grants for teachers. And housework. I'm better at the former. (And nothing happens if I don't have the kids and the job stuff done.) (edited) 7y
RebL Also, reading everyone's answers reminds me a little of short vignettes in a book on Littens. 7y
mhillis Doing jazzercise, studying Japanese, and looking at flowers! 7y
JoeStalksBeck I tutor college students in math, physics, chemistry and anatomy 🙂 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I like to crochet & knit, I have a large family so I love spending time & doing fun things with them, I love crafting, art, hiking, nature, & I love watching Netflix in sweatpants while eating French fries! 7y

Pickpick

On the eve of the 2nd anniversary of my father's death I'm extra sad and stressed today. I'm cheering myself up by talking about a bunch of books that have crossed my threshold. I make no other apologies or explanations for the posts to come. BTW I loved this book.
