The Great Godden
The Great Godden | Meg Rosoff

Everyone talks about falling in love like it's the most miraculous, life-changing thing in the world. Something happens, they say, and you know ... That's what happened when I met Kit Godden. I looked into his eyes and I knew. Only everyone else knew too. Everyone else felt exactly the same way. This is the story of one family, one dreamy summer the summer when everything changes. In a holiday house by the sea, our watchful narrator sees everything, including many things they shouldn't, as their brother and sisters, parents and older cousins fill hot days with wine and games and planning a wedding. Enter two brothers irresistible, charming, languidly sexy Kit and surly, silent Hugo. Suddenly there's a serpent in this paradise and the consequences will be devastating. From Meg Rosoff, bestselling author of the iconic novel How I Live Now, comes a lyrical and quintessential coming-of-age tale a summer book that's as heady, timeless and irresistible as Bonjour Tristesse and The Greengage Summer.

An atmospheric summer read, reminding me of the hazy, lazy days of summer, and the angst that happens wondering how people perceive you. A family goes on their yearly summer lake vacation, but things do not go as normal when the Godden boys join them. Recommended to me by @TheLudicReader for #NYWD 2022. Thanks for the rec - I really enjoyed it!

TheLudicReader It‘s a slow burn, for sure, but a great book. Glad you enjoyed it. 10mo

This was a good YA read, the Godden family are on holiday when two young men join them over the summer. It brings about disruption to their summer, romances are formed and relationships end.

#NewYearWhoDis has me in 2022 planning mode. Excited to make my way through @TheLudicReader ‘s list! I‘ve read 2,4, & 9 but Castle is due a reread. Most looking forward to the pictured. For my swap matches, I don‘t own any of these and would be perfectly happy receiving them 😊
@TheLudicReader After seeing your list, I‘m tempted to make recommendations from mine, but will resist.

monalyisha I saw you‘d read it but I‘m a little excited about the prospect of a reread. Castle‘s one of my absolute favorites. 💗 2y
TheLudicReader No, no, by all means recommend @JamieArc. 2y

This YA novel set at the English seaside evokes lazy summer holidays where the only pressing concerns are whether to read or swim... but that comfort is upset by the arrival of new people, along with the passions & jealousy of first love. Listening to the psychologically intense audiobook read by a man—Andrew Scott—is a distinctly different experience from print because the gender (& name) of the first-person narrator isn‘t revealed in the text.

I coined a new series of collective nouns: a plague of Goddens; a murder of Goddens; a conundrum of Goddens; a siege of Goddens; a pounce of Goddens; a chaos of Goddens.

This was 100% my thing: a quick summer read with self-absorbed characters in their formative years. I‘m not sure if I‘d have lived it as much were it not for Andrew Scott‘s thoughtful narration. He can pause dramatically like nobody‘s business and I am here for it.

Lindy I just finished this audiobook yesterday and agree about the pitch perfect narration. The story itself feels a bit flat as I think back on it, and the Godden brothers not entirely believable, so I think I will give this 3 out of 5 stars. Which is still a pick. 3y

I mean it‘s almost but not quite rich people problems. I was originally so-so but it‘s closer to a pick. The tennis match was enough to push me over to pick. (Quick) beach read territory.

This was an interesting book. Told from the perspective of a character with no name, this story of summer infatuation had an old, Atonement, 1930s picnic at the beach vibe that's hard to fully pin down.

Meg Rosoff has divided readers in the past. Not sure how long it‘s been since her last book. I expect this one to be just as challenging, just as controversial, just as divisive. #currentlyreading #preview #augrso2020 #ukya Plus #chillies
