A Town Called Solace | Mary Lawson

Excellent: three perspectives on a tragic but ultimately loving story set in Northern. All three characters: an dying old woman, a little girl looking after her neighbour‘s cat while waiting for her runaway sister to come home, and a young man who is just arrived from southern Ontario, are vividly portrayed. Again, a great audiobook because you can hear the different voices. Thanks to @Amiable for this #NYWD rec.

Amiable I‘ve since read all of Mary Lawson‘s backlist —all of her books are stellar! Would definitely recommend the others as well. 2mo

I know that I will read the weekly section for #CL and #SBR and finish my two current reads. I am pretty sure I know what‘s next. The Prophets is off my #NYWD list and my July #BookSpin and Ghost is for #AuthorAMonth and is my July #DoubleSpin. Love when I can knock off two challenges with one book. Looking forward to both.

Should finish Telegraph Club today and am really enjoying it.
The others are likely this week.
Have a good week all 😘

Cinfhen I‘m pretty sure @MallenNC had this book on her #NYWD list - must get to it! I saw @jenniferw88 just gave it 5 stars!!! 3mo
Cinfhen Ill be curious to hear your thoughts on 3mo
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen @TrishB it wasn't quite 5 stars, but am thinking of raising it to that as I can't stop thinking about it! 🤣 3mo

This reads like an action movie or an episode of Sons of Anarchy in book form. It‘s more violent than I normally read but it was a real page turner. I‘m pretty sure I originally decided to read this because it was on the #NYWD list I got from @Cinfhen so I‘m glad it finally made it to the top of my metaphorical TBR pile. The final chapters provided a satisfying end to the story.

marleed I loved this book. I infrequently read dark, gritty fiction like this but I think it‘s important to add to my mix. 3mo
Cinfhen Yay!! Happy you picked it up!! It definitely reads like it was written for a cinematic experience ❣️❣️ 3mo
DisneyFan Great review! Stacked. Hoping I can read it soon. 3mo

MallenNC @marleed Have you read Blacktop Wasteland? 3mo
marleed @MallenNC not yet - on my tbr though! 3mo
Cinfhen His other book is also excellent. I can‘t wait to see what he does next!!! 3mo

The Stone Angel | Margaret Laurence
post image

Had a night away in a lodge with my husband as a birthday treat and finished this wonderful book.
This is the best book I‘ve read this year 🙌😍 It was one of those experiences where I‘m aware of loving the way Laurence writes even while I‘m reading it. Astonishing too to feel I was the protagonist Hagar, I shared her regrets and weaknesses, when we‘re truly so different. Laurence almost performs magic to put you inside Hagar‘s head. 🔽

Centique Such an incredible look at approaching death as one become frail. Laurence is so realistic and must have life experience of this I think to get it so right. 4mo
Centique It‘s nice to have read this just after Eudora Honeysett because Eudora gave me enough optimism that this didn‘t feel bleak. 4mo
Centique I seem to be having an unofficial and coincidental theme of #readingoctagenarians and I‘m loving it. Yay for POVs from the elderly 🙌🙌 4mo

vivastory I'm so thrilled that you loved this one so much! This made me fall in love with Laurence's books last year. If you haven't read the rest of the Manawaka series, I *highly* recommend them!! 4mo
Centique Also kudos to all the Littens who read this as a buddy read and were much more eloquent about it! @CarolynM @squirrelbrain @merelybookish 4mo
Centique @vivastory I am definitely going to read the rest! What an absolute talent she had 😍 4mo
BarbaraBB A wonderful read indeed. And so is your getaway 😍 4mo
Cathythoughts Beautiful review, Paula. I‘m happy to say I have this book , I‘m looking forward to reading it soon. ❤️ 4mo
LeahBergen Eee!! 👏👏👏 I‘m so glad you loved this one; I‘ve been pushing it on people for ages. 😆😆 4mo
Cinfhen Looks like a marvelous getaway and book sounds fabulous 💕 4mo
squirrelbrain Looks like a lovely break! I‘ve just started Eudora on audio, after Cindy‘s recommendation! @Cinfhen 4mo
rockpools Wow! 4mo
Cinfhen I‘m happy you‘re listening to Eudora @squirrelbrain it‘s heartwarming 🥰 4mo
batsy I need to read this! I read all of her others books thanks to a Litsy buddy read. I'm all onboard with #readingoctogenarians and it kinda dovetails with #spinsterlit in a way. 4mo
merelybookish It makes me so happy when people fall in love with Margaret Laurence! She really is special and this isn't even my favorite by her! 4mo
Megabooks Excited that you got to get away. This was on @vivastory ‘s #NYWD list, and I got a copy earlier this month. Excited to read it! 4mo
vivastory @merelybookish I vacillate between a couple of favorites, depending on my mood 4mo
vivastory @Megabooks I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it. Her name popped up during a NYRB discussion, thanks to @leahbergen & after the Stone Angel there was no looking back 4mo
vivastory @batsy Have you read Anita Brookner? I have been meaning to for eons & I know she is a #spinsterlit saint 4mo
batsy @vivastory She is, isn't she 😆 I've only read her first one A Start in Life and I loved it. I plan to go down the list in publication order. Was actually thinking of having a Brookner year in 2022 but I'm already behind, so maybe next year 🙈 4mo
vivastory @batsy It's so funny you mention that one. I added it to my TBR over the weekend after watching a 5 Best English Novels video w/ 2 of my favorite people on BookTube. A Brookner year sounds delightful! I can see her being one of those authors that I want to read everything they wrote 💙 4mo
batsy @vivastory I feel the same! Just the reviews of her work plus a few interviews I've read suggests that she might become a favourite. 4mo
Centique @batsy @vivastory putting my hand up for any Brookner group reads. She‘s so insightful too ✋😘 4mo
TrishB Lovely review and I read this from a copy sent to me by @LeahBergen because she‘s obviously on commission 😁😁 it‘s a great read. 4mo
LeahBergen @TrishB 😆😆 4mo
Centique @TrishB @LeahBergen she should be on commission! 😂😂 (in the best way 😍) 4mo
CarolynM I think you‘re pretty eloquent too😘 I‘m looking forward to reading more Margaret Laurence. Have you read Moon Tiger or Tirra Lirra By The River? Two more elderly ladies on their deathbeds and both excellent. 4mo
Centique @CarolynM I loved Moon Tiger! I haven‘t read Tirra Lirra so I will put that on my list. ☺️ 4mo
Rissreads Your best book this year, then it‘s definitely stacked! 3mo

“The history of slavery is the history of the United States” but sadly most of us have been given a whitewashed education. So Clint Smith gives us the history lesson we all should of been taught. By visiting several historical sites linked to the Civil War, we first get the “official “guided tour version & then Smith respectfully & insightfully poses his own questions & observations. Very well done. A bit repetitive but that‘s the point.

Cinfhen I really think you‘re gonna like this @Megabooks 5mo

Chelsea.Poole Great review and I agree! I learned so much reading this. 5mo
Megabooks Looking forward to it! 5mo
MallenNC I‘m so glad you had a chance to read this one. I think it was my number one book choice of last year, and definitely one I still think about. @Megabooks I know you like audiobooks — this one is read by the author, and I really liked hearing his voice while I read my print copy. 5mo

I have had this book on my TBR for a while, and my #NewYearWhoDis list from @vonnie862 gave me the nudge I needed to bump it up a priority level. I'm so glad I did because this book was honestly delightful. Elwes is so warm and friendly throughout, with a very upbeat view of the making of The Princess Bride. I loved the additional memories from other members of the cast and crew throughout as well. If you are looking for some "dirt" you'll be ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) disappointed. But if you want some fun little facts and anecdotes, along with reassurance that this cast really was having as much fun as they appeared to be, you should enjoy this one. There were so many fun and interesting moments - I'm excited to pass this one around my family before we all get together for a rewatch!! One minor quibble - it would have been quite nice to have a cast list somewhere - I had to look up to see which names⬇ 5mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) matched which characters and write them on my bookmark!

#WickedWords - Castle @AsYouWish (appropriate username for this book LOL)
AsYouWish When I tell you I love that movie and that man, it is an understatement. He may have been my first crush at the age of 2…. This may explain a lot of my life‘s choices… story for another time, lol!!!!! 5mo

vonnie862 And the audio is so much fun. I listened to it while reading the physical book. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @AsYouWish - I'm totally with you!! Westley and Gilbert (Jonathan Crombie ❤) were definitely my first fictional crushes, and may have led to unrealistic expectations later in life 😂 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @vonnie862 - Ooo that does sound fun. We're getting ready to go on a road trip, and I am thinking I may find this one on audiobook to listen to on the way, since my husband hasn't read it yet. 5mo

Another great #NYWD rec from @Amiable about a passionate young Nigerian woman who is determined to have a “louding voice” and make her own way despite all the odds and abuses stacked against her. Also a great #audiobook.

#BookSpin and #DoubleBookSpin for May!
Thank you @TheAromaofBooks ☺️
Maude West is a leftover from @Mitch ‘s #NYWD list and this is just the push I needed to get going on it!
Also, I‘ve been looking forward to Solace quite sometime!

EJG31 A Town Called Solace is very good. My favourite of hers is Crow Lake. 5mo
Mitch Yeah! Enjoy! 5mo
