Hour of the Bees
Hour of the Bees | Lindsay Eagar
While her friends are spending their summers having pool parties and sleepovers, twelve-year-old Carolina Carol is spending hers in the middle of the New Mexico desert, helping her parents move the grandfather shes never met into a home for people with dementia. At first, Carol avoids prickly Grandpa Serge. But as the summer wears on and the heat bears down, Carol finds herself drawn to him, fascinated by the crazy stories he tells her about a healing tree, a green-glass lake, and the bees that will bring back the rain and end a hundred years of drought. As the thin line between magic and reality starts to blur, Carol must decide for herself what is possible and what it means to be true to her roots. Readers who dream that theres something more out there will be enchanted by this captivating novel of family, renewal, and discovering the wonder of the world.

I almost forgot! Another #yawednesday pick for diversity - Carol and her family spend the summer with her grandfather, a leathery old sheep rancher in the New Mexico desert. He constantly asks Carol (Caro-lee-na, he calls her) and her father "why do you spit on your roots?" Carol learns about Grandpa's storied past and embraces her hispanic heritage, through his stories and her mother's fiery and delicious ethnic foods.

staci.reads What grade level would you say this is appropriate for? 6y
ravenlee @staci.reads It's upper middle grade, although some libraries label it YA. MC is 12 and about to start junior high, has a 17-year-old half sister, and a toddler brother. I'd say 11-14, roughly. (edited) 6y

I can't recall the last time a book made me cry like this. Like, sobbing. Like watching Rent crying.

Carolina "Carol" has no idea this summer will change everything. A dried-up sheep ranch, a grandfather she's never met, stories and secrets, and bees. What does it mean to live, and to die? Without death, can we ever truly live? Is Grandpa losing his mind, or are his magical stories real? Family ties, roots, stories - they are everything.

I'm about 3/4 through now, after sneaking reading time every chance I could today. It's better than I expected. I saw "magic realism" in the description and groaned (I hate magic realism) but it's not what I feared it would be.

However, I'm getting a serious Secondhand Lions vibe, and it's irritating me. Hope it pulls up a bit.

I've had almost no time to read recently, which is super frustrating. Then last night I realized, as I was trying to cram in a page of The Bear and the Nightingale (library book), that my YA book club is Thursday and I hadn't started the tagged book. So, trying to scrounge some time for that. And I have another library book that's probably going back unread. Sigh. I need more hours in the day.

WorldsOkayestStepMom I just had to return 2 books that I didn't even start. I kept putting it off until all of a sudden they were due. 😞 6y

Boy, was this book a ride! I randomly picked it up from my library and it turned out to be amazing! I wasn't really sure what it was in the beginning but if you hang on.... It's such an amazing concept! I'd definitely recommend for a light read.

Hour of the bees 🐝 was one of my favourite reads last year. It's a middle grade about a twelve year old girl who has to spend her summer with her family at her mentally ill grandpa's place. He lives alone in the North American desert and the girl doesn't know yet that this summer might change her life. The book is beautifully written and heartwarming. I cried. A lot.

October book haul!!

I bought two of these and the rest are for review. I have already read of these which makes me feel accomplished. Everything else looks super good so i can't wait to get sunk into them.

read_diverse_books Woah! Do you read all books sent to you for review? 7y
Nafiza @read_diverse_books Honestly only if they are ones I requested. The unsolicited ones hang around if they look interesting otherwise i pass them onto friends who may read them. 7y

A magical realist coming-of-age tale about a young Chicana girl, her grandfather & family history/stories. I totally loved it. 4 out of 5 stars. Audiobook was well narrated. I wish this book had been published when I was young, this was exactly what 12 year old me would have devoured. It is, I think, technically middle grade, but reads slightly older, it could be read by young YA audience too. #HelloOctober

#chathamhsreads #read4fun Even though Carolina, the main character and the story's narrator is only twelve, the book is not just for middle grades. The story sequences told by the grandfather were a little much; they could have been edited down, but other than that a beautiful book.
