The Ghost Variations
The Ghost Variations: One Hundred Stories | Kevin Brockmeier
11 posts | 9 read | 24 to read
The author of the acclaimed novel The Brief History of the Dead now gives us one hundred funny, poignant, scary, and thought-provoking ghost stories that explore all aspects of the afterlife. A spirit who appears in a law firm reliving the exact moment she lost her chance at love, a man haunted by the trees cut down to build his house, nefarious specters that snatch anyone who steps into the shadows in which they live, and parakeets that serve as mouthpieces for the dead--these are just a few of the characters Kevin Brockmeier presents in this extraordinary compendium of spectral emanations and their wildly various purposes in (after) life. These tales are by turns playful, chilling, and philosophical, paying homage to the genre while audaciously subverting expectations. The ghosts in these pages are certain to haunt you well after you've closed the book.

How deep of an impression can a story — or a life — leave, when it is brief? This seems to be the existential and literary question that Brockmeier plays with in his collection of flash fiction, “The Ghost Variations.”

I read this one for book club and, therefore, didn‘t get to read it in quite the way I would‘ve liked. I recommend floating in & out rather than reading 100 2-3 page stories in a straight shot (trying to finish on a deadline). 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: Some of my favorite stories include: “A Notable Social Event”, “A Long Chain of Yesterdays”, “Wishes”, “Thirteen Visitations”, “Bees”, “All His Life” (which is very silly), “Take It With Me”, “An Inherited Disorder”, and, *most* notably, “The Abnormalist and the Usualist” (which is barely a ghost story, but ties into my particular interest in religious studies (and absurdity!) so keenly, it‘s like it was written just for me). 2y
monalyisha Many of the stories seem to center around themes of self-expression and communication, which is just perfectly meta. 😉 (edited) 2y
monalyisha #Scarathlon2022 this feels like cheating, but I‘m pretty sure each short story is able to be counted as a full book…which means that I‘d do the math of 100 short (very short!) stories as: 15pts x 100 = 1500 points. Plus 1 participation point = 1501. Plus Readathon hours = +30 #spookoween @TheSpineView + 30 #Pointsathon @Dieareader @GHABI4ROSES. SO, in total, 1561 points for this single book 😱. @StayCurious @Clwojick #TeamMonsterMash (edited) 2y
monalyisha #Scarathlon2022 Total Points for (combined) Weeks 2/3 = 1671. Total Points *to date* = 2123. Also, I totally keep forgetting the schedule for submitting points and would love a one-time reminder as a comment on this post! @StayCurious Thank you! 2y

Finally starting this one, which is for my short stories book club (with high school friends). We meet next weekend!

The first section, which is comprised of six stories, is about “Ghosts & Memory.” That feels right for a meet-up with friends from times past (&, although our meetings are infrequent, from times present, as well). 🖤

#Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash

monalyisha +1 participation point. Running total for week 2 = 4 points. 2y
vivastory I recently discovered the following & couldn't help but wonder if Brockmeier was partially inspired by it:

#DecemberWrapUp
December was a good reading month for me. I got through six books and enjoyed all of them. The Ghost Variations was a pleasant surprise. I like short stories, but I don‘t usually like them if they‘re as short as the ones in this collection (only about 2 pages each), but I ended up really enjoying them.

Total: 6
Print: 1
Ebook: 3
Audio: 2
Fiction: 4
Nonfiction: 2

Not ghost stories per se but quirky hauntings with melancholy epiphanies. These micro fiction stories may be too precious for some (and not scary at all) but are just my kind of thing. Loved it and not so patiently waiting for Brockmeier to come out with another novel.

vivastory This is at the very top of my TBR. One of my favorite covers of the year 3y
Flaneurette @vivastory I really love this cover too, may have to buy in hardcover. I‘m not sure how long any of these tiny thought experiments on the afterlife will stick with me because they are so brief they feel ephemeral if that makes sense? 3y

🌟 🌟 🌟 https://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/06/13/the-ghost-variations-by-kevin-b...

I went into this believing it was 100 scary ghost stories, when in fact this was 100 different ways someone can become a ghost; ghosts of our former selves; ghosts of our pasts. Some were funny, most were thought-provoking. All of them were just two pages long, however. Not bad a read, if you are looking for creepy this is not the book.

TalesandTexts Is this book supposed to be cautionary? 4y

Playing catchup from August!
100 lovely, literary ghost stories. From the humerous- ghost haunting games, to the sweet- a ghost husband communicates with his widow through scent, to the chilling- ghosts haunting the last man alive on Earth, eventually haunting all of space, and every combination in between. Each little story is compact but full to the brim with insight and the observation of humanity through a spectral lens.

100 short (very short) stories that feature ghosts. Some are sad, some funny, others spooky. #ARC #Netgalley
