A brilliant debut novel from a talented indie author. This novel follows a lovely couple on their vacation to a family cabin in the woods. Someone or something wants in & will stop at nothing to get what it wants, even if that means following them wherever they go. Filled with horror and gruesome scenes this one will leave you with a phobia into the dark.

Desperation | Stephen King

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ http://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/12/08/desperation-by-stephen-king/

Classic King tropes of people being trapped and good vs evil. This time a highway leads to Desperation, a small town haunted by an ancient evil. A group of strangers must work together to escape their death. Gruesome, detailed, and suspenseful. A bit heavy on the religion, God, and references in the second part for my liking, however.

KathyWheeler I reread this recently and discovered two things I‘d forgotten. 1: It starts off right away with action, and 2: how overtly religious it was. 3y

A great twist to the classic haunting trope. A small town is cursed by an ancient witch whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. My problem laid with the fact Ropa is a teen and the narration is the first person, so it comes off extremely tweeny. This was a gracefully put-together novel, the writing was so elegant. The characters were portrayed with such realness that I felt as if I was with Frank and his brother Jake from page one. The relationship between the brothers was extremely realistic as well. The story fell flat for me though, never picking up. It's more of a coming-of-age story.

At it again with my second attempt reading this thick read. I am buddy reading it with a group of others in hopes that I can get through it. I have made it further than I did the first time around, reaching over 100 pages, yet I still find it to be rather difficult to get into. I would like to finish it as I keep hearing such raving reviews. Here's to attempt two.

LapReader Most disturbing book I have ever read. It took me a year as it kept making me feel sick. 4y
AlisBookNookCorner @LapReader Would you mind my asking what made it so disturbing? Many refer to it as trauma porn, triggering, depressing, and that Jude's experiences are somewhat unbelievable as they are at times extreme. Some called it beautiful, heartfelt, and the best book they have ever read. My curiosity has gotten the best of me at this point which is why I am so determined to read it. Is it My Dark Vanessa or All The Ugly And Wonderful Things disturbing? 4y
Cortg One of my favorite books! I love long, character driven books. There is a lot of mental health, depression, desperation and self harm throughout the book, but there are also friendships and love. Not an easy read. It‘s an emotional rollercoaster for sure. Definitely not for everyone. I haven‘t read either of the books you‘ve listed but they‘re on my TBR. ❤️ (edited) 4y
See All 6 Comments
AlisBookNookCorner @Cortg I enjoy them as well! I'm deeper into the second part now and I must say, it is getting much better. The first two chapters were a little rough to start, but I'm enjoying learning more about the characters as things unfold. I didn't care much for My Dark Vanessa, there were too many overly graphic sex scenes portraying pedophilia and rape. ATUAWT was a heartbreaker, but I LOVED it! So many emotions, yet so unbelievably good IMO. 4y
LapReader I don‘t know much about the 2 books you mention. It is the self harm I couldn‘t stomach and as a teacher of emotionally disturbed children, I found it very real. 4y
TalesandTexts I know so many people who find this book a second or third try victory. I felt that way about the Magus by John Fowles and absolutely HATED that book. Should've listened to my intuition which didn't want me to read it 😂 3y
