It all begins with a strange coin on a sun-warmed sidewalk. Jane finds the coin, and becasue she and her sblings are having the worst, most dreadfully boring summer ever, she idly wishes something exciting would happen. And something does: Her wish is granted. Or not quite. Only half of her wish comes true. It turns out the coin grants wishesbut only by half, so that you must wish for twice as much as you want. Wishing for two times some things is a cinch, but other doubled wishes only cause twice as much trouble. What is half of twice a talking cat? Or to be half-again twice not-here? And how do you double your most heartfelt wish, the one you care about so much it has to be perfect? Includes an introduction by Alice Hoffman

I found this book when reading Alice Hoffman‘s short story ‘the Bookstore Sisters‘. It was the main characters favorite childhood book. It‘s an absolutely delightful story about a family that stumbles across a magic coin that grants ½ of any wish made by the person holding the coin. I wish I had a young child to introduce to this author!

I was feeling nostalgic this morning, so here‘s some questions about your childhood reading!

1. One of those Bailey School Kids books. I think it was Vampires Don‘t Drink Lemonade. 🧛🏻
2. My dad read this to me when I was little. ❤️
3. The Left Hand of Darkness. This is the book that made me fall in love with sci fi, after refusing to read it for years. I feel like I missed out.

#sundayfunday Enjoy your day, and don‘t forget to tag me!

Book no. 12 for May's #BookSpinBonanza is this absolutely adorable MG read about four children who discover a talisman that grants them wishes - except it only grants HALF wishes, leading to even more complications than wish-granting usually entails! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and am excited about revisiting this whole series. Eager acknowledges his indebtedness to E. Nesbit in every book, and if you enjoy her stories, you'll find a lot to ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) like here as well!!! This book also took me to Ohio (my own state!!) for #ReadtheUSA2020 @Andrew65 4y
Lcsmcat I remember listening to this in the car when our kids were young. The cat was so funny! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I loved this book as a kid and always forget that it‘s not E. Nesbit. 4y

ImperfectCJ Home state connections are always so exciting to me! Yay, Ohio! (And my kids and I loved these books.) 4y
Andrew65 Sounds great, I used this one for Ohio. 4y
BookmarkTavern I loved this book growing up! My father read all seven books to me and my sisters when we were young. ❤️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Lcsmcat @ozma.of.oz - I love it when books become associated with a special memory or place!! 4y
effani This series was one of my childhood favorites too, They are all so much fun! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - he does sound so much like Nesbit, so I love the way that he always mentions her books and how wonderful they are. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ImperfectCJ - It really is fun to come across places where you've visited or lived in books. I remember being quite entertained when Columbus, Ohio, played a big role in Ready Player One, since Columbus is the closest city to where we are (my husband commutes there). 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I remember you reviewing that one!! Mostly because it was for Ohio 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @effani - I haven't read them in so long!! I'm really enjoying the reread!! 4y
ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks That was a fun one! I was excited to find out that the house in Giving Up the Ghost (Eric Nuzum, not Hilary Mantel) is in my sister's neighborhood in Canton. 4y
veritysalter I think any book illustrated by Quentin Blake must be fabulous (probably a Roald Dahl bias) they make me think of my childhood and happy times curled up with a book. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @veritysalter - I totally agree!! There are definitely certain illustrators that I associate with my childhood, and will buy secondhand books with their drawings even if I have no idea what the book is about or who actually wrote it!!! 4y

4 children find an ancient talisman that grants wishes but only by half. They have exciting adventures and even lose themselves along the way! An adorable story about responsibility, thinking before you act, and fractions! I wished to enjoy this book twice as much as I did. 😂

I'm about halfway through this little gem that is yet another book I missed out on as a kid! This was bequeathed to us by my mother in law when she cleaned out some of my husband's, and his siblings', books. It's crazy how many books you can get through if you focus on one at a time!!! Lol #multitasker #quarantinereads #middlegrade

“Still, even without the country or a lake, the summer was a fine thing, particularly when you were at the beginning of it, looking ahead into it. There would be months of beautifully long, empty days, and each other to play with, and the books from the library.” This quote could be easily relatable to everyone. Almost everyone looks forward to summer, especially in the beginning when there is plenty to look forward to.

I would never read this book to a class. There is a moment when they end up in the desert when they come across a “very evil arab man”. The way they describe this person is very inappropriate for a classroom. Children can read this book on their own with their parents approval, but it has no place in the classroom.

New Fantasy Books - Whole Book
This book was very interesting and creative. Four children wish on a half magic coin and get themselves into all sorts of trouble. I found the idea of having to double your wishes very fascinating to think about. Ever since I‘ve finished this book, I‘ve been pondering on how I would double on my wishes. A very interesting read.

I loved these when I was little. One is about a magic library book and the other is about a coin that only grants half of what you wish for. Magical hijinks ensue. #somethingmagical #riotgrams

Had an all around bad day, so of course I'm unwinding with my foster #catsofLitsy and a children's book. Nothing quite beats revising the magic of childhood with a cuddly cat.

mcipher Hope that helps for a much better night. Sounds very comforting! 7y

Another book in the great reread of my childhood. Ordinary siblings discovering magic with rules. What could possibly go wrong? 😆 #overdrive
