Our Own Private Universe
Our Own Private Universe | Robin Talley
13 posts | 20 read | 24 to read
Fifteen-year-old Aki Simon has a theory. And it's mostly about sex.No, it isn't that kind of theory. Aki already knows she's bisexualeven if, until now, it's mostly been in the hypothetical sense. Aki has dated only guys so far, and her best friend, Lori, is the only person who knows she likes girls, too.Actually, Aki's theory is that she's got only one shot at living an interesting lifeand that means she's got to stop sitting around and thinking so much. It's time for her to actually do something. Or at least try.So when Aki and Lori set off on a church youth-group trip to a small Mexican town for the summer and Aki meets Christaslightly older, far more experiencedit seems her theory is prime for the testing. But it's not going to be easy. For one thing, how exactly do two girls have sex, anyway? And more important, how can you tell if you're in love? It's going to be a summer of testing theoriesand the result may just be love."

When you have 101 things you should be doing but read for an hour instead 🙈

I love this already and have discovered that it is extremely hard to put down!

I bought this book earlier in February and I‘m super excited to read it. It sounds right up my alley, so I have high expectations 🙈

Here‘s to hoping it‘s as good as I expect 🤓
Have you guys read it? 🤔📖
Also can we just appreciate the beautiful cover! 😍

Read it curled up in my reading chair (pictured). Impressed with the way the author handled the romance and the sex scenes, bit didn't find all the rest of the world/music interests/mission/debate stuff very compelling.

There was a lot I did like about this, but the characters drove me nuts and the drama was so over the top...

Time to cuddle up with one of my A to Z titles 📚 I've been anticipating this read. Talley's debut was so good - here's to hoping this one won't disappoint 🤞

I wanted to love this because this book is so diverse but I just can't. Sure the characters are diverse sexually, and racially but the setting ruined it for me. Writing a sex story in the middle of a church mission trip just blew it for me. I mean where were the adults?!? Also there is extreme pettiness and lying all around. The lgbtq+ rep was done really well, which makes me sad the story didn't add up to it.

Probably the only book by Robin Talley I don't recommend. Go read As I Descended and The Lies We Tell Ourselves. Skip this. No plot, a pushy character that pressures another character to come out while that same character pressures the other character back in the closet. Damaging behavior no teen should read and think is okay. Also how to have sex with another girl guide.

I didn't much care for this book. Half the time I felt like I was listening to a lecture on how to have sex and the rest of the time felt like listening to a bunch of people whining about politics, religion, and family drama, but really young people. It was uninteresting to me, but I imagine there's a better audience for it, as the writing wasn't terrible and it does make a lot of very positive commentary on intense social topics. 2.5 stars.

My first ARC!! I won this in a #HarlequinTeen giveaway and am so excited; although I either filled out the giveaway using my maiden name or they wrote this because of my email address haha! It's only been 3 years... maybe it's time to make a new email?

DeborahSmall Brilliant! Would love a hard copy ARC, well done! I've had my email address for 12 years and only married since April although we've been together for almost 15 years. My email address is only thing left to change 🙃 7y
Smangela @DeborahSmall when I first started to get into getting my name changed - I had a internal dilemma for a little bit! I've always been Angela Blackburn and now I'm not going to be? Plus it's such a hassle haha! I'm determined to change my email at some point 😉 7y
DeborahSmall Blackburn is common in Scotland although a place in England. Are you in US? 7y

Smangela @DeborahSmall I am in the US :) I should learn more about where my family came from! I wonder if it's Scotland? 7y
DeborahSmall There's a big football (soccer) team in premier league called Blackburn united. But as I say I think it's more popular in Scotland as a name. Burn on its own too. Your married name is Also very Scottish lol 😂 7y
MeganAnn At least I'm not the only one! I've been married for almost six years and still haven't changed my email to my married name... 😳 7y
