This fantasy romance was nominated for the 2022 Hugo Best Novella award. I felt there was a bit too much going on in this relatively short work and not enough context about the politics and magical elements.

A Litsy inspired fantasy read (don't recall who suggested it but thank you!) that I really enjoyed. Just yesterday BookRiot published an article titled “10 Sapphic Dark Fantasy Books“ and Fireheart Tiger is in that list: https://bookriot.com/sapphic-dark-fantasy-books/

A very nice coincidence is that my first read for July also matched the first Q3 #PromptMaze: Two-Word Title; thanks again @TheAromaOfBooks!

Also, here is my July #BookSpinBingo.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Looks great!!! 5mo

(2021) It's a fantasy novella with a setting inspired by precolonial Vietnam. It's only ninety-something pages, which it turns out is enough for a satisfying story about political intrigue, romance, magic, generational conflict, and growing up. I would read more in this world.

A solid coming of age LGBTQ story set in a historical Vietnamese setting.

Princess Thanh, on the cusp of adulthood, finds herself negotiating for her country's future. To complicate matters, she is in a relationship with the other country's princess. I would have enjoyed this story more if it were a fleshed out novel as opposed to a short story.

And book 2! It's compared to The Goblin Emperor for a reason, but there is more sentient fire.

Gorgeously written, deeply felt - I loved this although I‘m not sure I loved the romance itself. Full review to follow.

shanaqui Yeah. The “lil sis“ thing... I know it's also a kind of honorific, but it still primed my brain for NOT romance. 2y
imyril @shanaqui right? Plus it felt kinda rushed romantically to me too, altho I really appreciated Thanh saying she felt a connection and needed time, so I don‘t quite class it as insta love. 2y

Received to review! I just sped through this one. I sort of predicted how things would work out, but I enjoyed getting there and seeing Thanh find her strength.
