Jane Was Here: An Illustrated Guide to Jane Austen's England | Nicole Jacobsen, Devynn MacLennan, Lexi Nilson
7 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Jane Was Here is a whimsical, illustrated guide to Jane Austen's England - from the settings in her novels and the scenes in the wildly popular television and film adaptations, to her homes and other important locations throughout her own life. Discover the stately homes of Basildon Park and Ham House and the lush landscapes of Stourhead and Stanage Edge. Tread in Jane's footsteps as you explore her school in the old gatehouse of the ruined Reading Abbey; her perfectly-preserved home in her Chawton cottage, where she spent the last eight years of her life; or her final resting place in Winchester Cathedral. Whether you want to take this book as your well-thumbed guide on a real Austenian pilgrimage of your own, or experience the journey from the comfort of your own living room, Jane Was Here will take you - with a tone as wry as Jane's itself - on an enchanting adventure through the ups and downs of the world of Jane Austen.

I really enjoyed this, but I think you really have to be a “Janeite” (as they call it) to appreciate it. Three American ladies took a trip to England to trace the steps of Jane Austen‘s life and her novels and movie adaptations. They kept track and drawings of all the things they saw, not just buildings but also people and animals and plants. Really charming collection, and I will definitely use this as a reference when I make my way to England!

A newer acquisition for me, this book features areas in England with ties to Jane Austen, her works, and the adaptations of her works. It begins with the #City of London and discusses the London of her time and highlights houses and estates used in film and TV adaptations. A fun look at geography, fashion, and so much more! #200PnPCovers

CrowCAH I like these types of books. Brings the pages to real life! 3y

mabell I have another one about visiting places from Jane‘s England, but it doesn‘t mention the filming locations - that sounds like a neat addition! 3y

I have tulips! This is our first Spring in our new house and I'm loving all of the unexpected flowers popping up all over the place; feels truly magical. 🌷

This book was a lovely way to escape into Austen and England; I'm now dying to wander some country estates though! #pemberlittens

Feeling a bit abashed right now. I always read "quay" with a "q" sound in my head and heard others say "key" ... did not realize they were the same word! ? #pemberlittens

jdiehr Wait. What?? I didn't know that either 4y
Linsy @jdiehr Right??! Glad I'm not the only one 4y
Clare-Dragonfly Whaaaaaat?! But a key is a different thing (like the Florida Keys)? (edited) 4y

Avanders 🤯🤯 4y
Linsy @Clare-Dragonfly @jdiehr @Avanders @ShelleyBooksie Then am I reading this wrong? It says quay (pronounced: key) ...? 4y
Linsy @jdiehr @Clare-Dragonfly @jdiehr @Avanders @ShelleyBooksie Well, now I feel silly! Turns out @Clare-Dragonfly is right -- two different things. They're apparently referring to that walkway here. According to Miriam Webster, a quay is "a structure built parallel to the bank of a waterway for use as a landing place." Just happened to be pronounced like key and near the ocean. Oops!! Doubly chagrined now. ? 4y
jdiehr The more you know... 4y
Linsy @jdiehr so sorry 4y
jdiehr @Linsy Don't be sorry! I love grammar stuff like that 😄 4y
Avanders Lol thanks for the update 😁😘 (edited) 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I mean… it DOES say it‘s pronounced “key” so I‘m still confused! 😅 But it‘s good to know that a key is also something different! 4y
alisiakae I only learned the correct pronunciation of quay when I lived in Australia! 4y
Linsy @Clare-Dragonfly @4thhouseontheleft Good point, I was still saying it with a q before! They pronounce it key there? 4y
alisiakae @Linsy It‘s hard to see the details in the picture, but I am curious why it is labeled Quay. Quay is a wharf, and typically refers to the man-made structure. Commonwealth countries use it more often than in America. Key and cay are different from quay. Key/cay are low-lying islands, with cay more common in the Caribbean, and key (Florida keys) more common in the US. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I thought “quay” was referring to the wall in the picture but now that I look again, it‘s on land so it‘s not a quay at all. Maybe it is the island? I‘m so confused 🥴😂 4y

Are rock cakes actually good? I think I just assumed they weren't because Hagrid, lol. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #potteraday

peanutnine My friend has a Harry Potter cookbook and made "Hagrid's Rock Cakes" once. They were actually tasty and not hard as rocks lol 4y
Linsy @peanutnine Yum! Okay, I'll have to try. I guess Hagrid is just bad at it, hence his being like actual rocks. 4y
