This Is Not the Jess Show
This Is Not the Jess Show | Anna Carey

Black Mirror meets My So-Called Life in this fast-paced, timely YA thriller about separating fact from fiction--and how far we'll go to create our own version of reality. Like any other teenager, Jess Flynn is just trying to get through her junior year without drama . . . but drama seems to keep finding her. Between a new crush on her childhood best friend, overprotective parents cramping her social life, and her younger sister's worsening health, the only constant is change--and her hometown of Swickley, which feels smaller by the day. Swickley is getting weirder by the day, too. Half the population has been struck down by a mysterious flu. Conversations end awkwardly when Jess enters the room. And then one day, a tiny, sleek black device--with an apple logo on it--falls out of her best friend's backpack and lands at Jess's feet. But the year is 1998, and the first iPhone won't exist for another nine years.

My three most recent reads. This Is Not The Jess Show was a quick and fun read. I have plans to start the Harry Potter series in September and then read my whole collection of Danielle Steel books when I‘ve finished those. For now, I‘m picking up my second Colleen Hoover book!

I was reading this on kindle, a little bit each night, but at about 20% or so I got so unnerved and stressed that I had to stop so that I could finish it in one sitting when I had time. Picked it back up on summer holiday and did just that - so fast paced and gripping, I really enjoyed this Truman-show-esque book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Basically, The Truman Show for a generation of teens who have never heard of The Truman Show... I wanted to love this, because the premise is really fun and it started out strong but I was ultimately disappointed. It was a quick, easy read but it lost steam after the big reveal and the second half of the book was just one long chase scene... not my favorite

August TBR is 100% complete 😀 Each book is worth points per 100 pages and they equate to $$ in my Book Bank. This month I earned 3 bonus points for finishing all my books plus read an extra book for more points. I did buy 2 new books so the bank loses some $ but I‘m excited for Sept! Total points/dollars earned in August: 34pts./$30

📚📚📚 I‘m begrudgingly giving this book 3 stacks. I didn‘t read the copy and when the “big reveal” happened all I could rage about was a particular 1998 movie and how this book was ah, “heavily inspired” by it I‘ll say. The copy says it‘s Black Mirror meets My So-Called Life but honestly, no. A YA ‘thriller‘ 😒 that younger readers may think is really cool which is why I gave it 3 stacks only. Not pleased with this book at all.

Just finished this book in the span of 24 hours. What an insane read! I really enjoyed it though and I think it touched on some important themes in regards to privacy and people‘s obsession with fame. Good stuff and it scored me my first bingo in awhile for #bookspinbingo

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Yay bingo!!! 3y

I finished my first Foxed Quarterly, which I dipped into every night before bed. It has led to a new routine, in which I spend time before bed reading either an essay or short story, so now I‘ve started the Anna Quindlen book.

I literally just finished Jess Show, and I‘m so thrilled to see it‘s the first in a series. It is a wonderful book, perfectly executed!

Happy reading!

I am so into this book! To the point that I was randomly telling people about it at work today. No, they hadn‘t mentioned books or anything, but I decided to talk about it anyway. 😂

I graduated HS in 2002, so only a few years after this book takes place. Which means I‘m all over the references made in this book. And then it ties in reality TV?! I‘m thinking this was written just for me!

Also, Costco has great macarons.

vivastory I was at Target a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised that they had macaroons. 4y

I kinda forgot what I knew about this book by the time my library hold dropped and I sort of feel like that's the best way. But if you like info, Jess lives in an idyllic town in the 1990's but begins to suspect that maybe some of the things happening to her are being engineered. A classmate confesses the truth, they are on a set and part of a highly rated TV show about her family. But Jess doesn't want to be a TV star.

LiteraryinPA Is it different from The Truman Show? 4y
TaraTLK I would say in concept no, in execution I think the book looks more at the motivations and of course since we are in Jess's head we get a closer look at how the discovery feels. 4y

It wasn‘t really what I was expecting. The beginning was ok, but the later half just didn‘t do it for me. It was a pretty quick read for me.

Jess is a typical 90s teen but sometimes life feels a bit dramatic, like the time she sneaked out of the house and returned to find it had been burglarized, or that devastating tornado, and the fact that her sister is dying of a rare blood disease. But life is good in small town Swickley. Jess has never left ... *can* she leave?
A modern YA Truman Show to be published next month by Quirk Books!
