I knew the subject matter going in but really wasn‘t expecting this to be so heartbreaking and tough to read. This novel in verse tells the story of Betita and her family‘s experience as cranes, people who migrate, for various reasons. Her family is torn apart due to cruel immigration policies in the US. I‘ll never understand how people can treat other people so inhumanly. Our systems are so broken.

My last book for #MiddlreGradeMarch was this novel in verse about an undocumented girl in East LA who ends up in detention with her mother facing inhumane conditions after her father is deported to Mexico. While hope and beauty were constant themes throughout, this was raw and completely heartbreaking. This is definitely a story younger kids will get a lot out of, but they may need adult help to process it and the emotions it brings up.

This book was so devastating to read, and yet so beautiful at the same time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Betita, a 9 yr old gurl who holds onto hope even in the darkest moments after her and her mom are picked up by ICE and locked in a detention center.

I don‘t typically read middle grade books but this one did not disappoint. This story is told in Verse and it doesn‘t diminish the heartbreak and ugliness that happens in these dentition centers. This story was beautifully written.

This beautiful middle grade novel-in-verse was my #DoubleSpin pick for May. It‘s the story of immigrants escaping from danger and trying to find a place of safety. It‘s a story of the natural migration of people. It‘s a story of how our country‘s immigration policies impact families. I‘m so glad I read it. You all should, too. #BookSpinBINGO

A story about a little girl's experience being in a cage. This was a heart wrenching read. It definitely creates awareness of what detained immigrants go through at the border.

Beautiful, heart wrenching, and so perfectly written. #2021Reads

Reading this beautifully written book was a very moving and thought-provoking experience. The narrator of this book is nine year old, Betita. She shares her story through poems and sketches. Reading this book softened my heart and opened my mind to the plight of undocumented immigrants in my country. I challenge you to read this unusual, yet very well written book.

This was such a powerful read about #immigration, the fear that people live with in regards to ICE, and a glimpse into what has happened to adults and children who were detained. TW for violence and sexual abuse of a minor. It's heartbreaking that this is a middle grade book, that this is a reality that people live 🙁😠 #latinx #SuperSeptember @Andrew65
