To Love and to Loathe: A Novel | Martha Waters
17 posts | 21 read | 7 to read
The author of the hilarious...joyful, elegant (Publishers Weekly, starred review) To Have and to Hoax returns with an effervescent, charming, and swoon-worthy novel about a man and woman who never agree on anythinguntil they agree to a no-strings-attached affair in this Regency-era romp. The widowed Diana, Lady Templeton and Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham are infamous among English high society as much for their sharp-tongued bickering as their flirtation. One evening, an argument at a ball turns into a serious wager: Jeremy will marry within the year or Diana will forfeit one hundred pounds. So shortly after, just before a fortnight-long house party at Elderwild, Jeremys country estate, Diana is shocked when Jeremy appears at her home with very different kind of proposition. After his latest mistress unfavorably criticized his skills in the bedroom, Jeremy is looking for reassurance, so he has gone to the only woman he trusts to be totally truthful. He suggests that they embark on a brief affair while at the house partyJeremy can receive an honest critique of his bedroom skills and widowed Diana can use the gossip to signal to other gentlemen that she is interested in taking a lover. Diana thinks taking him up on his counter-proposal can only help her win her wager. With her in the bedroom and Jeremys marriage-minded grandmother, the formidable Dowager Marchioness of Willingham, helping to find suitable matches among the eligible ladies at Elderwild, Diana is confident her victory is assured. But while theyre focused on winning wagers, they stand to lose their own hearts. With Martha Waterss signature cheeky charm and wonderfully wry wit (Booklist, starred review), To Love and to Loathe is another clever and delightful historical rom-com that is perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Evie Dunmore.

I enjoyed this second volume in #TheRegencyVowsSeries even more than the first! The wager planted at the end of TO HAVE AND TO HOAX between the always-bickering Diana & Jeremy is the focus here, with their story taking the forefront. Jeremy hosts his annual 2 week long hunting party and while Diana is looking forward to scheming to force his engagement, Jeremy looks to turn their friendship into one with benefits… a touch of modernity for the era!

Book #2 in the spirit of this Valentine's season. Supposedly a Pride&Prejudice retelling, soon to find out.

TLuvs What a cute regency era romcom, with a little spice, and playful banter. Definitely an easy summer beach read. 14mo

I liked this so much! I was surprised because the first one wasn't really brilliant.

It was nice to see the couple of the next book and characters overall were pretty good. I liked how Diana had her opinions about society and women's rights.

This was really fun, light and entertaining to read. This wasn't too long and hadn't too stupid twists. I loved to follow how Diana's and Jeremy's story would end.

Fun and flirty, I enjoyed this second installment in the series. Especially great on #audio; the narrators are fantastic.

Maria514626 Perfect timing! I was looking for something fun and this popped up. It was available at my library. Now it‘s on my phone. 🥳🥳🥳 1y

Tagged book sums up my feelings on our recent storms. I love reading during the rain but the change in pressure brings me migraines.

I really liked this book, second in the Regency Vows series, it's about Diana and Jeremy. It's funny and steamy.

To say that I loved this book would be an understatement! The slow burn romance of Diana and Jeremy was EVERYTHING! The sapphic love between Helen and Sutton was unexpected and refreshing. The banter practically leaps off the page. I enjoyed reading this immensely!

Fun take on a “let‘s hook up during the holidays” story. Pleasantly surprised by the cheekiness & how sexually-forward the characters were. It felt like a real picture of feminism prevailing during a sexist age. Their banter had me full-on grinning; really spectacular dialogue throughout!

This was a pick, but not a super enthusiastic one… I think I may have enjoyed the story more in print because I really did not care for the male narrator
@TheAromaofBooks this was my #bookspin for September!

My plan for tonight was to start a fun, fluffy audiobook and work on my embroidery project. But beginning of the school year exhaustion is real, so I'm laying in bed like a zombie while listening to an audiobook instead...

This was a cheeky, hate to love trope that was a lovely summer time read that gives you sass, sparks and romance.

@GingerAntics and @Lindy

I can see progress, but even 2 socks at the same time won't become my favourite sort of knitting project. 😬

#audioknitting

GingerAntics That‘s really cool, though. 3y
SeaToSkyes That takes real skill though! I haven't been brave enough to try socks yet lol 😂 3y
julesG @GingerAntics thank you! 3y

GingerAntics I can knit, but I‘ve literally done zero projects. I can do the knit stitch and that‘s it. 🤣😂🤣 3y
julesG @SeaToSkyes It takes courage to cast on for the first pair. My first pair was so stiff, because I used too small needles and had too much tension on the yarn. But knitting helped me with exam anxiety during school and uni. There was a time when I'd chuck out pair after pair; always annoyed that they weren't perfectly identical though. Now I'm knitting one or two pairs per year and stick to shawls for the rest of the year. 😉 3y
julesG @GingerAntics what about that striped project you were working on? 3y
GingerAntics @julesG that‘s why I started knitting. I‘d love to figure out how to knit a shall. That striped thing is supposed to be a blanket (eventually), but I was using a knitting loom and it takes forever to get a sing or row done. It‘s much smoother and streamlined to knit with the needles. I need to figure out how to make a 55in x 75in blanket on knitting needles. 3y
GingerAntics @julesG I would then also need to learn how to perl with the needles. That‘s the one thing that‘s easier on the loom. The loom is just so bulky and each stitch seems to take forever. 3y
julesG @GingerAntics You could just knit all stitches - on needles (cable needles for that size, or several squares that you then attach to each other). When you knit right side rows and wrong side rows, you end up with "garter stitch" instead of "stocking stitch" (where you purl the WS rows). 3y
GingerAntics I just found a 60 inch cable knit in the round needle. I couldn‘t find anyone trying to take a project off a loom and put it onto needles, so I‘ll have to start over, but that‘s not a big deal. The first five rows alternate between knit and purl. Then the first five stitches and last five stitches alternate knit and purl to create a border, so it lays flat. 3y
GingerAntics I also got a smaller cable circular knitting needle in the same size needle, so I can experiment with a smaller swatch. Maybe I can find some YouTube videos and figure out the purl. 3y
julesG I'd suppose you take the stitches off the loom and onto the knitting needle one at a time while you're working them. @GingerAntics let me check my bookmarks for tutorials, I'm sure I have some (seeing that I knit in several different styles) 3y
julesG @GingerAntics Maybe those videos help you. https://youtube.com/c/ExpressionFiberArts otherwise I'll have to persuade me to do a tutorial video 😉 3y
CaffeineAndCandy ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
SeaToSkyes That have a problem with tension. The way I hold my yarn is not ideal, but it works for me. However it also causes tight tension lol 3y
julesG @SeaToSkyes when I hold the yarn too tight, I wrap it around my finger the other way. Often helps. Though, I remember grooves in my index finger from the yarn biting into it. 3y
SeaToSkyes @julesG I'll have to try that! ☺️ 3y

More delightful banter between a lady and a lord. Lady Diana and Lord Jeremy bicker and banter as their way of flirting with each other. Quite the story.

So good. So, so, so, so good. I loved this book; I zipped through this book in a day because I adored the storyline, the characters, and most of all the witty banter. And this was such a quick read, I kept saying just one more chapter and the next thing I knew I was done with the book. And, I cannot wait to read about everyone else; I especially hope Lady Helen gets a story, I‘d love to know how that ends!
