I liked it but, does the world really need another WWII book? Maybe. But perhaps I have just read too many and I am a little bit burned out on them.
Hedy Bercu is a young Jewish girl who fled Vienna with the arrival of the Nazis for the Channel Island of Jersey two years earlier, only to find herself trapped by the Nazis
@suvata I finally sent the book out yesterday. Hopefully the surprisingly quick deliveries at least some of us experienced in the last round will continue this time. Set during WWII, Hedy ran from Vienna to escape, ends up hiding in Jersey, in the Channel Islands, which become the only British territory ever occupied by the Germans.
Not really sure why I read this bc I don‘t like war set books, but this book was good for being what it was, very well written.
so-soHedy escaped Austria ahead of the Nazis only to find herself imprisoned with them on the island of Jersey. This would be bad enough but Hedy is Jewish, everyday of the occupation is filled with terror.
Kurt just wanted a quiet life of being an engineer in Germany when he was conscripted and sent to Jersey.
Hedy and Kurt find comfort and love while doing what they can to undermine the occupiers and keep Hedy safe from command‘s attention.
pickI have read many WWII books and this one stood out in its own way. It is based on real people and was very well researched before it was written. Hedy, Kurt, Dorothea, and Anton...friendship, love, and war. I do believe I will look for other books from Jenny Lecoat in the future.

Thanks to #GraydonHouse for the opportunity to read and review this book. I was captured by the story of Hedy, a Jewess who escaped Austria only to be stranded on the island when the Germans captured it. She spoke German so she was given a job translating papers. She caught Kurt's eye while she was working.Her relationship with Kurt, a German officer unfolded in a beautiful way. ⬇️
I'm 80% through this book and my heart is palpitating. Did you ever have to keep putting a book down to catch your breath? I want to finish and I want to stop right here....

so-soThe book is well-written and interesting. However, having read so many books on WWII, I was expecting more depth to the story. While based on the true story of Hedy Bercu, a young Jewish woman from Austria trapped on Jersey in the Channel Islands, the book is predominantly a romance, set during extremely difficult times. Not a lot has been written about life in the German-occupied Channel Islands during WWII, so I did find that interesting.
pickSo I signed up for a #bookblogtour last year for this title and then found I also got it from my job as an audiobook! I don't want to knock it for its genre but for a #historicalfiction novel it was good. More #romance than I expected, which I couldn't help but compare to Paris Never Leaves You, which ended more tragically than this one. Easy read #worldwar2
