A Nature Poem for Every Night of the Year
A Nature Poem for Every Night of the Year | Jane McMorland Hunter
33 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
A calming collection of nature poems to help you relax and unwind at the end of every day. Now more than ever were all in need of a daily fix of the natural world, to comfort and distract us from the cares of everyday life. Keep this beautiful book by your bedside and enjoy a dreamy stroll through nature every evening, just before you go to sleep. All the great, time-honoured poets are here William Wordsworth, John Keats, Emily Dickinson, Robert Bridges along with some newer and less-well known poetic voices. The poems reflect and celebrate the changing seasons: read Emily Bront on bluebells in spring and Edward Thomass evocative Adlestrop in summer, then experience golden autumn with Hartley Coleridge and William Blake's 'To Winter'. Beautifully illustrated with scenes from each season, this wonderful book deserves a place on your bedside table for years to come.

I love that all the poetry is turning to blooming flowers and things turning green, but somehow we‘re still getting snow. Go figure. It‘s just one of those years.

I quite enjoyed this Whitman. I‘m finding that the more I understand poetry, the more I enjoy Whitman.

My sleep has been all haywire the last week and a half or so. That‘s thrown off my routine, so I‘m catching up in this book now.
#JaneMcMorlandHuntet #ANaturePoemForEveryNightOfTheYear #Joetry2021 @CBee @Chrissyreadit

TrishB Hope the sleep pattern settles down. 4y
GingerAntics @TrishB me too. It seems this happens every spring for some reason. I finally broke down and decided to try a weighted blanket. So much for amazon‘s two day shipping, though. Hopefully it will be here Tuesday. 4y
TrishB They seem to be quite popular 👍🏻 4y
See All 8 Comments
GingerAntics @TrishB some folks swear by it. I‘ve tried all of the “sleep hygiene” stuff for years with no success, so I figured it couldn‘t hurt to just give it a try. I found one for a really good price, so we‘ll see how it goes. 4y
TrishB Good luck 🤞🏻 4y
Chrissyreadit I enjoyed this poem! I hope you like the weighted blanket- my husband loves his. Maybe your so excited about Spring it‘s like the day before Christmas? That‘s how I feel... seriously- hope you get good sleep. 4y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I don‘t know. Until this year, spring wasn‘t really a thing since we were in Texas. It‘s just summer and not summer. This year, spring hasn‘t quite started yet, though we have lost all the snow (which makes me kind of sad, actually, though it does making walking places easier). I‘m not sure what it is, other than frustrating. It‘s been sitting in San Bernardino since Friday, so if this thing ever gets here, I‘ll be happy to try it. 4y

Chrissyreadit I had to read it twice. It was the most simple and elegant juxtaposition. Beauty and horror. I love poetry. 4y
CBee Wow. 4y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit it really is. Looking at the dates of the poet, this is definitely a WWI poem. Knowing how horrible those trenches were, to think there was (real or imagined) some moment of beauty in there made me tear up. 4y
See All 11 Comments
GingerAntics @CBee right? It‘s so simple, but so powerful. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics absolutely! I can‘t imagine how hard it must‘ve been to find beauty during such a horrific war. But it‘s there, if you look and listen.... 4y
GingerAntics @CBee I‘d be so intrigued to read about the story behind this poem. Did it really happen, was the poet in the trenches and wrote this later to deal with it, did he hallucinate this while in a trench. So many of those guys came back with stories of strange experiences down there when things got really bad, and let‘s be honest even when things were “good” down there, they were BAD! 4y
CBee @GingerAntics me too! I‘ll have to look it up. I‘ve never heard of this poet. 4y
GingerAntics @CBee me either, but that‘s not saying much. I‘m still really new to poetry. Until last year, every time I attempted to read poetry, I would read like one stanza and think “this is stupid” and switch to something else. I knew a few poems, but that was it. A whole poetry collection was not happening. 4y
GingerAntics @CBee he was one of the most popular British authors of the 1920s, but is rarely read today. That‘s sad. I‘m still trying to hunt down a back story or even a discussion of this poem. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics I totally understand, I‘m the same mostly 🤷‍♀️ So he wasn‘t a soldier - here‘s the Wiki - and there really isn‘t much else about him. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humbert_Wolfe 4y
GingerAntics @CBee I know. Even his wiki is sadly short. I looked for some of his stuff on Amazon. They have a few, but none of them even have reviews. Apparently reviews are how suggestions are generated. With no reviews, he‘s not being suggested. I want to buy some of his work, review it, and see if I can get other people to review it, too. It wouldn‘t certainly take a lot of reviews. 4y

Chrissyreadit The reassurance is there- but climate change lends another layer to that poem for me. 4y

@TheBookHippie A POEM ABOUT THE OCEAN!!!
🌊🌊🌊
I can see why you suggested Longfellow. There is something quite musical about his poetry. 💙💙💙
#JaneMcMorlandHuntet #ANaturePoemForEveryNightOfTheYear #Joetry2021 @CBee

CBee Beautiful ☺️ 4y
GingerAntics @CBee isn‘t it?! It just rolls along. You can almost hear the music behind it. I‘m sure someone has put this to music, but if they haven‘t, someone needs to get on that immediately. There could be a classical version, and the rock version, and the boy band version, and a dowop version, and a jazz version. Oh a jazz version would be lovely. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics it is super musical! I bet someone put it to music, it really is perfect for that. And I can seriously hear the waves and picture the ocean when I read this ♥️ 4y

GingerAntics @CBee I feel like I should find a very special poem for tomorrow. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics that sounds like a lovely idea! I wish I knew some to suggest. But I know you‘ll find something amazing 😍 4y
GingerAntics @CBee he mentioned today in his address that Irish poets are the best poets, so I guess that‘s a place to start. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics oooo of course!! He mentioned Seamus Heaney (of course I‘d never heard of him 🤦‍♀️). Or Yeats is always a good choice! 4y
CBee @GingerAntics and can I just add that the fact that he knows what poetry is and can quote it is SO DAMN REFRESHING 😅 4y
GingerAntics @CBee I LOVE Heaney!!! I‘ve only read one of his collections, but I‘ve read several other poems online. He has a lovely, straight forward feel about his poems. I‘ve got three of his collections on my wish list for rebuilding my library. I was actually leaning that way. There are so many good choices there. I thought if Biden when I read the poem about a man‘s son dying in a car accident. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics I‘ll be sure to read some ASAP 😁😁 4y
GingerAntics @CBee if you like nature poetry Field Work is perfection. I loved so much of it. That‘s the first of his books I want to get for my library. 4y
GingerAntics @CBee I HAVE FOUND THE PERFECT POEM FOR TOMORROW‘S EXTRA SPECIAL JOETRY POST!!! 4y
CBee @GingerAntics I can‘t wait 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 4y
CBee @GingerAntics thank you! I‘m reading about him now ♥️ I do love nature poetry ♥️♥️ 4y
GingerAntics @CBee oh, you‘ll love him!!! He‘s actually written tributes to Wordsworth and Yeats, so it seems obvious who his influences at. (edited) 4y
GingerAntics @CBee RTE (Irish National TV) already used my choice to celebrate Biden‘s win. Maybe I don‘t follow anyone who reads/watches RTE. 🤞🏻 4y
CBee @GingerAntics you should use it anyway! It‘ll be fine - and obvi you have good taste 😁👏🏻 4y
GingerAntics @CBee I don‘t know about that, but it‘s almost like Heaney wrote it for this exact moment, like he knew what this moment in time was going to be like for those crazy Americans across the pond. 4y
CBee @GingerAntics sounds perfect then 🙂 4y
Chrissyreadit Another great thread I missed - I followed your Joetry hash tag to see what it was and read some lovely poetry along the way - and agreed with @CBee I do not read enough poetry- but am now thinking that there have been many poetry posts on Litsy- just not all poetry resonates with me- but I‘m enjoying your picks- so if I follow your poetry I would totally be reading more poetry!!! Plus I have some amazing books I enjoy. 4y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit welcome to the party!!! 4y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit would you like me to tag you? 4y

Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote this evening‘s poem. I‘m not sure how I feel about most of the poem, but I do quite enjoy this bit here. There is something lovely about it. I wish the rest of the poem had whatever this has that makes it feel so magical.

TheBookHippie I love his work.......zen 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it does have a lovely, peaceful feel about it. 💙💙💙 I think he‘s getting added to my list of authors to explore further. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Oh yes! I can't think of any you wouldn't like. Fair warning that I argue with myself a lot although I love a lot of his work I do firmly believe he was at least hugely emotionally if not physically abusive to his wife. 4y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie okay, strange question (possibly two). 1. Do you mark in your books of poetry, and if so, 2. How? 4y
TheBookHippie Yes and wait for it ..... Bible pens and highlighters 🤣👏🏼 because they work 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie why Bible pens and highlighters? How are they different from other pens and highlighters? (edited) 4y
See All 13 Comments
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics no clue but they don‘t bleed through 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh on the onion paper. That makes a lot of sense. Luckily these pages are quite thick. I‘m worried about highlighters in general in this book because the paper is slightly glossy. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie wait, are your Bible highlighters the gel highlighters? I had some of those (not labelled as Bible, just gel) in grad school and LOVED them. Those would work nicely on this paper because they won‘t smudge. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh perfect!!! 4y
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie @GingerAntics this conversation made me laugh! 4y
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit We are the definition of fun🤍 4y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit the proper highlighters are ever so important. 🤣😂🤣 @TheBookHippie we are a wild group over here with our gel highlighters and our poetry. 4y
