Huesos en el jardín
Huesos en el jardín | Henning Mankell
9 posts | 10 read | 7 to read

Wallander found a farmhouse in the country he likes & is about to make an offer to buy it when he stumbles over a human hand in the backyard. The hand belonged to a woman in her fifties but her identity is unknown. Wallander & his colleagues now have to find out who the woman was & who killed her. The fact that she died after WW2 makes that more difficult. The story also focuses on Wallander‘s thoughts on ageing & retirement, end of life.

This v short book is 9.5 in the wallander series + the final book is next. I'll be sorry to see the back of one of my favourite grumpy police officers so this mini episode has prepared the way. Here our hero views a house to possibly buy + finds a human hand reaching out of the soil. The ensuing investigation is a quick story which also involves linda. The book has an end piece in which the author reflects on his relationship with his character.

PhyllisH I always enjoyed the Wallander TV series with Kenneth Branagh. 3y

I almost never read a series out of order, but I‘m glad I picked up this novella. I‘ll now start the Wallander series from book 1. This short mystery, written as part of a national push to get people reading, was a good intro to Wallander. The afterward about the author‘s motivations was really insightful. In this one, Wallander almost buys a house in the countryside but sees a human bone in the garden and the story goes from there.

I heard Mankell was a good writer; so I picked this one up at a library sale. But it's not one of his "top 5" or 8 or 10. So I'll become a little more familiar with his work for future reads. I think this one is beginning to pick up.

KVanRead Also loved the original Wallander tv series. 8y
Melkyl I have a few of his books in my TBR pile. I haven't ever read any of his work, though. 8y

Donna_sBookMinute @Melwilk -- I think we all have pockets of books we've been meaning to read. We'll get to them in due time. 8y
Melkyl @Donna_sBookMinute - I hope that have enough time!! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Liberty -- It's not my favorite bookmark. But I made it from scrapbook paper for my current read. I'll try to remember to post my favorite when I get home this evening. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute I put this one aside to read library books that are due soon. Will revisit. 8y

So this is my overflowing TBR box. It's been sitting, unobtrusively, on a bookcase shelf -- filled with (shrug) just books. Well now, it houses my shortlist. No more searching for "that next read." It will be "An Event in Autumn." But wait! There's no room for library books. I'll find a place.

RealLifeReading Ooh a TBR box! I just have stacks of books around my room. Maybe I need a box! 8y
Dmbulan I like the idea of a TBR box as well. Although what would I put in it?? There are so many options. I see you have Into the Woods in the box - it was a good solid 4/5 for me. It is a great mystery but seemed to drag a little at times. I would read more by the same author, definitely! 8y
MrBook Great collection and pic! 8y
ChristieStratos I have too many TBR books to put them anywhere but on shelves - I like the idea of the box so much though! It's going to be satisfying as you watch the box empty out. I've also done a TBR jar with titles of the books I want to read to help me choose the next one. Fun! 😊 8y
Tav I have a whole Tbr bookcase. 8y
